Several updates over the offseason, in this video of the 2022 sailing season my wife Debbie and I are commissioning the new autopilot. I replaced a Raymarine ST4000+ with a new Evolution Autopilot System EV-100 Sail. The autopilot needed to perform compass linearization so it could find local magnetic deviation. We did this by doing a couple 360 turns. That’s why we did a nice short out and back and a couple 360s. Evolution autopilot Set-up and Commissioning
The ST4000+ worked well but it caused us a few headaches from time to time. Lake Erie is known for a short choppy wave pattern in the shallow western basin. The ST4000+ would sometimes get confused when drifting off course then panic and put us into a quick circle. I did everything I could to tune it to our conditions but in the end, it was 20-year-old tech. So, this season let’s see what the new unit can do. The built in Gyro should help with the confused waves.
Now the boat is completely running on a SeaTalk ng backbone for all the electronics. So far I really like all the integration.
