Our friend Mike Hermans explores some classic Iommi tones with the new Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra. The Sabbra Cadabra overdrive incorporates a modified treble booster that is run directly into a Laney Supergroup preamp, a combination used by Tony Iommi is his most famous Black Sabbath years. Powerful yet simple controls allow the player to fine tune the important Treble Booster frequency Range and the preamp gain for anything from classic Paranoid tones to modern Metal.

UK Customs finally let me have my pedal. Have had a few hours with it through various amps, but through my Laney Klipp is where it gets interesting, It does sound exactly like a ball park 70's Iommi with all the knobs at 12 o'clock, and that's on a few different guitars too. Changing the settings makes much more of a difference that it sounds like on the video, the gain on zero is a pleasant warm drive and gain on max is a brilliant dirty fuzz tone which makes this a great pedal rather than just a one trick tribute pony. But, it can be noisy on my board, different placements and power supplies made a difference of sorts. And, you can't have it after a buffered pedal because it just craps out and sounds like a strangled single coil sound so I can't have it behind my tuner, my 80's Boss PH1r, my Dunlop Wah or my Rotovibe which is a bummer because that's just where I need it. So, it's either first in my chain or I'm replacing a bunch of other stuff with true bypass which just isn't happening. Sigh. Sounds amazing though, I love it.

I own this pedal and the walpurgis. Both are great. The sabbra was noisy and usable until I got a cheap isolated power supply from Amazon for 25$. You can hook, I think eight pedals up to it. I almost gave up on it until I got one of these. The Walpurgis is just as good and much easier to use. They sound different but at the same time still sound like Tony.

If you want to comment on the peddle that's fine. That's what this forum is for. Dude's one of my favorite guitarists in the world. I've been playing almost every day since 1965 and I've seen and heard quite a few players in that time. Mike stands up there with any of them. Since we can't hear you, you must feel you're better to make that comment and even if you are art is subjective. I know you've heard all this before.You're just not mature enough to take heed.Really what I'm saying is....if you can't add to the conversation ,keep it to yourself, as will I--JB

@seancurtin5131
@seancurtin5131 2 года назад
I've bought one and I find it an absolute bargain. I'm still looking at a Tony Iommi Laney signature pedal but the honest truth is that this is a pedal I would gig with as Caitlinbread have made more of these than Laney has signature pedals so if it got stolen I could easily replace it and that makes it a hands down winner. Did I mention it's also an absolute bargain at it's price point. Even if you grab this while you search for the ultimate gear setup, this gives you as close to the sound at this price point as your ever going to get and best of all you can live in the now and be playing with Sabbath like sound instead of dreaming about all that hard to come by more expensive gear.

@@danielallan5058 Maybe you just assumed I was talking about the Electro Harmonix Pi Big Muff.... I'm talking about a cheap 17 or 18 dollar pedal by an off brand called Twinote, called Pi Fuzz. The demos on here don't do it any justice. It's precisely the same as this Sabbra Cadabra pedal, and I'd wager its the same exact circuit. It sounds NOTHING like the name implies, it's a overdrive/distortion pedal with the same tonal qualities as the Sabbra. Honestly, I could do a comparison video but I sold my Sabbra Cadabra pedal last year. I remember reading something about this pedal I'm talking about and reading jfet. I don't know what that is, I'll admit, but I do remember reading it online when someone was talking about it's innards. Check it out on here even though the videos arent great Brand is Twinote, pedal is called Pi Fuzz (and its not even a fuzz in the slightest.... so weird... I thought so anyways but still pleased with it)

Laney ti boost Tony Iommi or Sabbra cadabra?
@ithemba
@ithemba 5 лет назад
depends on your amp. the laney ti boost is a very versatile treble booster and basically made to be combined with the new version of the supergroup they brought out. If you have a amp that gets you close to a supergroup, then the boost will do a very nice job and maybe even feel livelier since even really good preamp fet circuts will never 100% reach true valve sensitivity to your playing. this thing, the sabbra cadabra, has a preamp built in, so you basically can run it through a crystal clean jazzamp and still get that iommi tone.

Am I the only one who's not impressed with this pedal much? It's weird - I love Sabbath, LOVE Catalinbread (I own a Karma Suture), love PGS, love Mike & Andy... But I don't like this pedal much. I don't think it sounds like Iommi's tone. His tone was fuzzier than this in the early days, and sharper than this in the mid-70's. I think a Fuzz pedal boosted (in front) by a Klon-style pedal or a TS would be better.
@JLE999
@JLE999 10 лет назад
I disagree. It sounds pretty accurate to my ears. His tone was actually not really that fuzzy or as gained out in the early days as you would think. Listen to either the Paris 1970 or Montreux 1970 bootlegs . It was a middy and bright mid-gain tone for the first two albums.
@wgb01001

Yeah, I think the tuning is what made his tone so different on everything from Master of Reality and on. He essentially was using the same setup aside from when he used the Laney Klipp. Have you seen the Castledine Wizard? Still wanna try that one. The clips of that one sound more accurate to Iommi's tone to my ears.
