Catch and cook dungeness crab - how to catch crabs on Oregon coast

Another short video on how to catch and cook crabs. September is one of the best time to catch crabs on the Oregon coast. They migrate into bays along the coast and are easy to catch with crab pots and crab rings. I use chicken for bait, and set my pots down in about 15 foot of water.
I also show how to I setup my pots and what ropes and what tide to look for. The best tide for crabbing is an incoming high tide.

That's the same method we cook our dungeness crabs, clean before cooking. Cleaner tasting meat and you don't run the risk of getting VERY sick from an undercooked whole crab (been there, not fun). The commercial crabbers cook them whole because they charge by the pound.

i've tried to explain to people who are not from the northwest why we clean our crabs before cooking them but for some reason it just doesn't sink into their heads. we do it for 2 reasons: the crab leg/claw halves fit in a smaller pot and cook faster using less fuel, and due to all of the industrial pollution that has happened over the past decades in our coastal and inland tidal waters we do not consider the 'guts' aka the butter or liver as safe to eat, as this is where anything toxic will accumulate in the crab. toxins don't accumulate in the meat, so that is safe to eat. also, psp is a constant problem here and eating crab guts is more likely to get you killed by a psp infection. it's the same reason why we clean razor clams before cooking.

When I used to do commercial blue crabs in TX, when pulling traps I would spin the boat in a circle. This way you are only pulling against the center of the circle instead of against the boat and current. We hand pulled about 200 per day this way.

Lived in Coos Bay for 20 years, mostly in Charleston/Empire area. I was a commercial fisherman on big trawlers (nets), catching bottom fish, shrimp, and occasionally tuna (with hooks/lines). Never crabbed from a boat in the bay. I always just sat at the end of the docks and tossed crab rings. Almost always caught legal ones. It just takes time, so bring a 12-pack. It used to be legal to crab off Oregon docks without a license. Don’t think that’s true anymore. Furthermore, I always thought you’d have to leave the bay (cross the bar) to catch rockfish!

When you throw the crabs like that, you could possibly kill them. Better to just place them back in the water. Also, when you rip off the head like that, they are still alive. Best to dispatch them in boiling water. Kills them instantly. Also, the crab butter is very flavorful, yet you wasted it. Not really sure you know what you are doing.

Nice catch! Our record came out of Bandon. Four people, 8 pots and 96 legal crabs in one pull. We had to release four limits of legal crabs. The crabs were absolute giants too. State Police was checking boats at the dock. They measured a couple then said, "No reason to measure those". I said "those are the small ones" and opened the second ice chest with the largest crabs in it. They just laughed.

PK, make it easier on your back, go to harbor freight, pick up their small winch for 49 bucks,(twenty five hundred pounds of pulling power), then over to an exhaust shop have them bend a pipe to reach over the side of your boat, make a sort of boom set up, use it to raise your pots, bring up the pot swing it in the boat and your ready to cull the catch. If I had your address I would send you a setup for all the great informative videos you have given up.
