My first clamming trip (for 2018) to the Oregon coast was a fun one. I managed to catch 7 razor clams on the beach. Afterwards, I cooked them in butter and fish fry crumbs. Note: the best time for digging clams is usually a minus tide.
Yeah for me the fact that the flame was about 6 inches from his tire and he was basically deep frying in BUTTER let's you know this dude isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer!!!!
I originally watched your blog because of your surfperch fishing, but now I really enjoy how you expanded your blogs to different types of fishing, including clamming. Keep it up PK! Good stuff
Nice video! Razors are soooo yummy! I'm from Southern Oregon but have only caught razors in Alaska. We mostly go for gapers and cockles here on the south coast. A couple suggestions: 1) Clams toughen as you cook them, eventually getting the texture of a rubber band. Typically you only want to cook around 90 seconds per side to get a nice tender clam. 2) Use unsalted butter to reduce the saltiness.
Thank you. I feel very fortunate about what I do, clamming is quite peaceful and relaxing. The best part is being able to share my hobby with the world. Take care
for a camping trip, I just pre-mix some panko with four in the bag I will shake the fish, clams, rabbit, quail, deer liver or whatever in and then you can season or salt it to preference...without the unpronounceable ingredients you get in some of those mixes. Great vid, its always fun to see your take on all the activities that I also do.
I love razor clams. I think they are the most tender tastiest clams. Got to dig for them when I was a student at Humboldt State. Got to taste clam chowder made with razor clams That was out of this world.
Thanks for another well made video. I went to Seaside one time and the sand was like glass. We couldn't detect a thing. This young 10 year old boy would run around and spot a clam every couple minutes for his dad. He was seeing something we definitely didn't. He was like a magician.
I did the same thing. Then I learned a neat trick, and I have done better then many a clammer many times. I love helping find clams for other people now to when I limit. Can't dig em for them of course, but you can find holes. Part of the fun is the hunt
This is the second one of your videos I have watched. Many of us pass up a chance to catch fish or seafood because we don't know what is or isn't safe to eat or how to prepare it and what parts to avoid. Hats off to you for cleaning and cooking it right on the beach or in the parking lot so we can learn. Having not grown up in the area we would not know otherwise. Thanks..
Another great video my friend. You have a lot of knowledge and it is very nice of you to share it with us on these videos. Thanks for what you do. Take care and enjoy the outdoors.
This was calm and satisfying. I wish I was out there with you, buddy! A little elbow grease to earn that great lunch! I’ll bring the beer and Pepsi. Man, I can’t begin imagine! Digging up your own clams, cooking eating and enjoying a great meal by the sea. Great stuff!
I don’t eat sea food because it grosses me out but the way you did this is really making me want to go get some and cook it how you did, those look absolutely amazing🤤🤤
Man, that looks good! Nothing like fresh seafood. Wish we had the variety in AZ that you have. Lol. Love your catch and cook videos. Thanks for sharing. Tight lines!
Up here in oregon for work but live in AZ, i cant eat enough seafood haha probably spent wayy to much money on it honestly but its so awesome going to fresh seafood markets and picking what ya want
2018 and it just came up on my puter? Clamming was a big family thing when I was a kid growing up in Washington. My grandparents, my folks and even my older sister. That was in the 50s and what we called a clam gun was a long thin tapered shovel and you found the hold and dug like hell! As you were digging so was the clam! Dang I miss those times!
Man, you know how to have a good time. Only thing that would make it better would be beer, and camping nearby. Thanks for the knowledge, keep it up. Tight lines!
Hey PK, nice to see another upload. We love your videos. We’ve been talking about going after razors as well. Definitely need to look into the vented tubes though, looks like the way to go for saving your back.
@@HeartMemory93 Sure, it's so people don't trade-up or throw back small or broken clams in the sand to die. www.dfw.state.or.us/mrp/shellfish/regulations.asp
Hey hey hey PK! Have you tried pushing your gun into sand at a slight angle toward water? Might save you from some broken shells. Thanks for the upload. Cant get out as much as I like, so living vicariously through your vids. Keep them coming!
PK; this is extra entertaining with the Micky Mouse voice, funny. Oh, just a little bit of butter, then he throws in the whole quarter. I'd try some panko bread crumbs with some tarter sauce. Sure looks good.
Informative video. Thanks ! In some beaches in England, the tide can come in quite fast and high. It can be deadly if FOG descends at the same time. You don't know where to turn to run for the shore.
PK, I am looking forward to meeting you when things are better. I have one more operation to go thru and then off to Oregon for a month of crabbing, clamming and fishing around Florence. Will let you know when so maybe you can come over and we can meet. Really enjoy your videos on how to.
Once August arrives, crabbing will get a lot better. If the time allows, we can definitely go crabbing. Good luck to your procedure and quick recovery. Tight lines.
Razor clams are currently in quarantine in California. Not in Oregon? Lucky for you guys! The California Department of Public Health has warned recreational harvesters for the past couple of years that Domoic Acid levels were too high here in Northern CA for them to be a safe harvest. Otherwise I would be all over them :) Nice Video!
No problem, I was just stating that they are present in CA but the Department of Health suggest you do not take them most years as they are toxic from filter feeding on naturally toxic plankton. looks like OR does not have so many issues?
Google it. No one has ever died from red tide poisoning in Cali. I believe this is an attempt to discourage recreational fishing and not the first. Red tides dont effect large stretches of beach. When they happen there very limited so closing the season because of a claimed generalised high reading doesnt make sense.
In Yachats there is a restaurant called The Driftwood Inn, and they make absolutely great razor clams. And their Rubbery Shrubbery salad is delicious as well.
Stumbled on your channel recently. love..Love..LOVE your videos. Normally I don’t comment on posts, but I really admire and appreciate your simple approach to fishing the Oregon coast. Been crabbing for years with my kids north of Tillamook - you inspired me to finally buy my own pots. Keep posting your vids - you rock!! PS - what brand of eyewear is that??
Hi, Ken. Thank you. I had a great time doing these videos. The eyewear is just some cheap sunglasses I got off Amazon: amzn.to/2HXAyXB. They work great and are pretty light weight. Cheers.
Never been a fan of razor clams, always found them a tad too fishy to stomach. But this looked extremely fun! Always went looking for clams with my father, but that was on a Pacific island with warm sea and sun.
Hey PK Yi, well I went fishing today April 28th at my favorite lake. I used the same rod you use for surf fishing. And I caught a trout a big one, female, and tagged, but since it was a clean hook up, using a circle hook, I let her go so she can make little fish. Any ways, Tight lines.
I looked at the title of this video and thought to myself "this guy is mistaken! Those aren't Razor Clams! They look nothing like a Razor Clam!" Imagine my surprise when I looked it up on Wiki and saw that it was! Here in the UK, we also use the term 'Razor clam' or 'Razorshell' to describe the Atlantic jackknife clam, (spp Ensis directus) which has a shell like an old fashioned 'straight' or 'strop' razor, used by men to shave themselves until the advent of the Bic safety razor! The clams in your video are Pacific Razor clams (spp.Siliqua Patula), which are mainly found on the Coastal waters off the North Western United States. We have a very similar looking clam in the UK which we call a 'Gaper' Clam (spp. Tresus Capax) which also looks similar to the legendary Geoduck Clams of South East Asia! (spp. Panopea Generosa) Great video and got my mind thinking laterally! :) FYI, Whilst the Atlantic jackknife clam is in the same family as the Pacific razor clam, the Jacknife clam is in a completely different genus!
@@namtrinh4695 15 is the limit, and continuously checking with the department of fish and wildlife for new updates. covid19 shut down clamming here in Wa since March 2020.. my fruit trees are missing out on valueable clam guts and clam nectar for healthy fruit and rapid growth! Hopefully we get some Fall & Winter digs this season.. GL
@@namtrinh4695 best thing to do is just keep searching the Department of Fish & Wildlife, or call them for clamming dates which usually are heavy in Fall & Winter, but not to far fetched to see some Spring Time Day Digs, but not as often as the fall and winter night digs!
@@juknjp421 thank you for the quick response, I'm planning on a solo road trip up to Oregon and Washington this labor day weekend, i was wondering what is a few good spots to visit or see
