I love carp, catfish and fluke “aka Flounder” all bottom feeders. I enjoy these fish more than most other fish. Carp is also considered a delicacy outside the U.S.

If you cut fish vertical across from back to belly each 5mm. and then fry with lot of salt on it you will fry all the bones and meat will connect back so you will not see any cuts. Best way to do fish.

So of the reason some say it tastes like muddy water is because of the size of it. Cause they say that about catfish also… but Ive caught big ones that taste like mud and I’ve caught smaller ones that doesn’t.

You're the first person I've seen that likes carp. I've tried carp from multiple areas in my state of Kansas and it's still taste bad. Currently I'm trying to make homemade fish sauce from a carp I caught a few weeks ago. I'm doubtful it'll turn well but I thought it'd be interesting to see the results.

To take off the scales of a fish collect two bottle caps and attach the top part to a piece of wood and then you can scale the fish a lot easier and faster

A lot of people hate carp specifically when its from standing water. So, in Utah the Carp that are in Utah lake are risky to say the least, but that is mainly from the quality of the water, and not technically the fish itself. But, If you catch them in rivers and the like I think its 100% okay. I would agree that people are way too sheepish in the way they hate them though.

It’s not appreciated in the US bc of the fine bones, and the swampy undertones. But I like it!

The history of the Common Carp here in the United States is a long and interesting story. European immigrants are the main reason the Common Carp is here. Back in Europe the common carp is highly prized as a important celebration food. It was the traditional Christmas dinner for millions of Europeans and on the table at almost every type of celebration meal. But when the Europeans came to the United States. There were no carp here. We did have the Buffalo fish, which is not a carp dispite popular ignorance. But the Europeans wanted the common carp and they complained to and lobbied the United States government to import their favorite fish. Popular demand finally grew so big that the government finally gave in and imported several thousand common carp from Europe. At first, before the common carp became, well, common. You would easily find it proudly displayed on the dinner tables of the very well to do Americans. They were still very few and so they were expensive. And of course. Many aspiring entrepreneurs saw a great potential of getting rich quick farming Carp. Which really wasn't that hard. Carp can survive in very poor water quality. They also make lots of babies! An adult female carp can lay over three hundred thousand eggs each spawn. And Carp can spawn three to four times a year. Do the math. But this was a double edged sword for the carp farmers. Though they could produce an abundance of carp each year. After so many people got into farming them and the wild populations of the introduced Carp began to swell. Suddenly over night the bottom fell out of the carp market and prices plummeted. Now that they were no longer out of reach of the common man. They quickly lost their snob appeal for the wealthy and restaurants even took them off their menus. And so this marked the first decline in the popularity of the Carp and it quickly became associated with the food of the poor. But the poor were more than happy to have this once popular resource all to themselves . And during the depression. Carp made a small comeback because a single, good sized fish could easily feed a family of four. They were plentiful and fairly easy to catch or even trap. So Carp was a popular depression food. At the end of the depression and after the second world war ended. America had a great financial boom. Creating the legendary American Middle Class that was the envy of the world. But along with this new found prosperity. Anything even slightly associated with the depression became taboo. So once again Carp fell out of style and only the poor were still eating them. Now most Americans have lost the knowledge and skills needed to harvest, clean and butcher carp. Important information like the need to bleed them by cutting their throats while they are still alive and in water to prevent clotting. Allowing their still beating hearts to pump out the majority of their fishy tasting blood. As well as allowing them to die in a very peaceful manner minimizing any adrenaline that can also cause their meat to go off in taste. Carp have always been an important food fish worldwide. And it still is simply because it's a fantastic tasting and healthy fish. If you know what you're doing.

If you like carp but not the bones. Pressure can it. It'll make the bones soft like cannned salmon or sardines.

I dont get it. Im from Bulgaria and not just us , all Balkan countries love carp. We consider it as the best fish. Especially if you are a fisherman like me. I dont understand why so many people from the US hate it..

How strong is the flavour? I tend to like really mild white fish. I'm not really a big fan of salmon and other really fishy flavours.

Hey Zack, I've never had Carp in the US. I've had it in China and it wasn't fishy to me. However, given that it's farmed there I assume that it should be a bit more fishy in the US if you're taking the fish from more muddy or unclean waters. It does have a lot of pinbones though. The Chinese way of eating it has a lot of ingredients to mask bad smells / taste like ginger, chili peppers, green onions, soysauce, and alcohol. You might need to add strong or masking flavors to better enjoy the fish. It might be good in a cream cheese spread given how mild salmon becomes with cream cheese.

It looked like you were fishing in chaska. If you were when the river gets lower you should go to the other side of the bridge when the water levels go down and there is a beach that you can fish on and it’s gasss.

yeah its that beach where there's that bend in the river right? And on the other side there's that big brick structure. I go to that spot to fish for gar from my friends boat when he brings me out. But from shore that spot is awesome. It's just a pain to get to on foot.
