Every winter, we stock rainbow trout in accessible areas that anglers of all abilities can enjoy, especially those living in urban areas who may not have access to bigger lakes. Here are some tips for catching them. Find a fishing spot near you at tpwd.texas.gov...

Water color and line color will also make a difference. Like he said, trout have good (probably amazing) eyesight which means having the proper color of line. I personally have multiple poles with multiple line colors for this reason alone. When you shop for poles, look on the bottom of the pole. It will give you an idea of what lines LB are best for that particular pole. I fish in streams mainly so I use 4.6’ rods with 3 or 4 lb test. Might want to use something closer to a 6 footer or so for a lake for the extra distance as I also wade in streams (and they are relatively small). Remember the shorter the rod, the more you can sort of feel them fight which is why fishing is really called angling. And shorter rods help myself out with the feel so I know the difference between a snag, nibble, and bite (most of the time :)). Also reel size. I’m not going to name brands but theres a LOT of them. Once again, look closely at the reel and somewhere it will tell you what LB of lines to use and how much yardage each reel can hold. If the reel says it will hold 100 yards of 4 LB test, it makes it a little easier to purchase line by doing simple math (300 yards of 4 lb should get 3 uses which is a good deal in fishing). Also, many places will have bulk line where they can just put on whatever you want (I ask for suggestions) and go from there. I would imagine most local ponds/smaller lakes don’t have this luxury. One of the most important things when it comes to casting for distance (which is important with 2-6 lb test line) is to make sure your reel is as close to the given number on the reel which usually is around 100 yards. It is MUCH easier to cast a pole with a full reel of line. Both for distance and accuracy. I was making this mistake quite a bit when I first started.

4lb test line is fine spooled up the reel. 3 way set up is too much of a pain unless you tie off a swivel. Just pinch the weights 12” to 14” up from the hook off he main line. Atlas Mikes salmon eggs shrimp flavor ( Use two on the hook ). This year in PA 16 rainbows by 10am. Catch n release. Good fish’n to you all.

I'm from Colorado and I consider myself pretty good at getting trout. Accept fror one early morning situation where the fish were just dropped of at Lions park, I've not seen anyone but those Coumorants catching them at Lions or Miller's Parks. If there is something that is making it to difficult for us to compete with the birds ( maybe they stay in the center ) then I would suggest it's a significant shame for us to place all those fish in locations where they are just lost to us.

Great, thanks. I will go to Walmart and find some right size hooks and right prepared bait. Very helpful.

Not to be "that guy" but suggesting 6 lb line then layer saying to use 4 lb lone on the reel is just going to confuse new fisherman and possibly cost them a lot of lost gear. Your leader (line going to the hook) should always be lighter than your main line. That way if something is going to break it will be your leader first. Instead of possibly losing a ton of your main line (which is also more hazardous to the body of water you're losing it to) and possibly floats, bobber stops, swivels, etc. Losing a hook or favorite lure is one thing, but to lose all the rest unnecessarily isn't good.

Saying that your leader should always be lighter than your main line shows that you have limited experience
@adventureswithbear

@@tarheeltexan if your main pine is the lighter weight, you're going to lose everything. Which not only means cost but you're just creating that much more waste in your water system you're fishing. Irresponsible

It looks like he's using Owner Mosquito hooks in Size 8 and Powerbait Trout Bait or Gulp Trout Dough. They definitely should have done a better job explaining everything, or list it in the description.

Baits with a scent are good, but live bait is better. Worms, meal worms, crickets, etc. But, I prefer to fly fish, so using artificials flys with a little scent goes a long way!
