Over the memorial holiday weekend (2011) this curious and carefree raccoon, we affectionately have named "Peanut", sauntered by and decided to visit our indoor cats for a brief while while taking shelter from the rainfall.

NOTE: Our rescue raccoons resides in a region where there hasn't been a case of raccoon rabies for over three decades which is tracked by the local public health department.
We are fortunate to be able to observe and professional work with a variety of wildlife species since we reside next to a protected wildlife preserve. Our rescue raccoons lounge and play on our terrace as well as use it as a thoroughfare. No children nor pets are ever harmed, especially the wild animals captured in these videos.
Please note that none of the raccoons are our pets thus please follow your local wildlife guidelines for the safety of humans and animal wildlife alike.

They are adorable WILD beasts--lots of people have tried to have them as pets, only to have raccoons maul their babies. So, yes, they do eat ANYTHING.

I feed raccoons, skunks, and opossums every single night. I cut up table scraps and hot dogs and go out in the driveway and they all gather around and eat. Skunks and racoons will walk right up to my feet and sometime even take the food from my hands. I've been doing this for years and have gotten to know them all personally....and in the summer, they will bring their babies. It's hard to believe that all of them get along and mind their manners, but they do.

Nedyah74 That's beautiful! Where do you live? In Australia we have possums (wild only) and some people have resident possums who they feed and you can pat some of them too, but it's always a risk with a wild animal.

Hi Olivia, I live in Tennessee in the United States. I have a couple of opossums that I feed each night but they never get as close to me as the skunks and raccoons get...and what's even more amazing and funny to me is that ALL of these animals will feed together peacefully without fighting. And last night for the first time I saw 2 foxes out there eating with them also. Now that shocked the heck out of me, but it happened.

Aww thankyou for sharing this with me :D I just ADORE animals and it really brightens my day seeing/hearing about unlikely animal friendships and different species getting along. Did you happen to get any photos? You're so lucky being around those animals! Do you have chipmunks or squirrels? Deer? I would LOVE to have a yard that was frequented by all kinds of woodland animals.

I will try to get some photos of all my animals. Yes, I have about 4 chipmunks that come feed every single day and about 10 squirrels and tons of different birds. They come during the day and I will take some pics of them....the night feeders (raccoons, skunks, opossums, flying squirrels, and foxes) are harder to photograph because it's so dark and my phone doesn't have a flash, but I'm going to try to do it tonight. I'll keep ya posted Olivia :D

Raccoons are carnivores so they can do some significant damage, They're one of many of natures efficient killing machines & ones not to be challenged. The flip side of them is that they can be quite sweet if not threatened. Our other raccoon videos on this channel reveals the kinder side of the species. Thanks for commenting and watching!

Used to have a baby raccoon we raised with cats they got along great , he still visits my moms house with his full grown kids now my mom feeds them dog food and they stay away from the garbage , they also purr super loud when you pet them lol.

+Kairu Hakubi that was an attack or defensive stance. I have had a few in the family. they do this when warning away threats. they are very vicious when they attack and can easily kill dogs several times their size. Most of the time they are peaceful though.

Absolutely, cats do that too, arch back and oftentimes begin to stand up too. So this body language would be understood by the cats.

I feed the raccoon's and fox's, stray cats that come around and they have all been nice and have thanked me a million times over with that look, I will allways go out of my way to care for them, I never throw food out I take my leftovers and put them in the back yard and it is alaws gone they are wonderful and hungry and im glad I can help them

I tell the kids and wife don't throw the food in the trash, i well set it outside for the animals, they gripe about it but I tell them something well eat it, for a hungry animal it is better than eating dirt.

As you've recognised, when raccoons feel frightened or threatened, this posturing which is seen in the video is quite common. Peanut was a young raccoon at the time this was taken. He felt startled by the sight of the cats which is why he postured to make himself appear larger believing it might keep the danger away. However, he quickly realised that the cats were not a threat & as such felt safe whenever he saw them for the years following each time he visited us.

A racoon kit - orphaned by a hurricane was adopted and raised by the ferals at our feeding station. It is obviously a runt (after 4 yrs it is still only small-cat sized). It behaves like a cat (doesn't eat with its hands, tail talks and makes a kind of purring noise when it chitters). "Racoon kitty" observes all of the good manners at the feeding station (what the eating order is, where her designated spot is). She has had 2 litters of kits that we have seen and benefits the colony by chasing off dogs and the possums that compete for food. Her kits have always departed at the appropriate age and only "Racoon kitty" has remained as a permanent and accepted member of the feral colony.

That raccoon could be in a pitch black room and he would still eat all that food, their hands are super sensitive, so it can find and handle food while still staying fully alert to his surroundings.

Hi Guinnie, It's a myth that raccoons seen during daylight hours are rabid. It isn't unusual for healthy mother raccoons with hungry babies to search for food during the day. Only if a raccoon or other wild animal is acting strange or sick - convulsing, circling, appearing disoriented or partly paralyzed, showing signs of unprovoked aggression or uncharacteristic tameness then there's a need for concern. You can search wildlife websites to verify the myths about raccoons in daylight.

We have the biggest raccoon we've ever seem coming around for snacks. Gets along with the cats just fine. And gets along with the skunks and opossums, and the urban foxes 💞

One sign the raccoon doesn't have rabies is it drinks water in the vid without getting hydrophobic. Rabies typically causes animals and people to have a hydrophobic (fear of water) reaction.

I absolutely LOVE racoons! I could watch them all day and night! We have 2 racoons, an opossum and a few stray cats we feed every night. They didn't always get along at first, but we figured out if you leave enough bowls for everyone they don't mind sharing lol. I would absolutely love to have a raccoon one day, but don't think it would be fair to them, so we just feed them lol. ❤❤

Hahaha! Racoons are a pain, We feed our barn cats at night, after the cats have had their fill, the Racoons eat the rest. I don't mind though, the 'coons don't kill my chickens anymore, and they don't associate us with the food because its just there when they come in. Not to mention they don't fight with the cats, everyone gets their fill. One very cold winter I saw sleeping with my goats, 5 cats, 4 racoons, a chicken that for some reason didn't make it into the hen house that night, and a rat. All were curled up on top of the goats to keep warm!

My people call them Wawuks-(American Indian language). The God of my fathers will look down favorably upon you for caring about His creatures. I have a nightly visitor who has an old injury that makes it difficult for him to forage-we are coming upon a year and he is quite fat and healthy compared to how tragic he looked when he first showed up. My cats and dogs are so used to him-they no longer alert us when he slowy climbs the fence and approches the food bowl. Thanks for sharing your video!

Raccoons could easily kill a cat. Cats are smart enough to stay away. Don't let them mix. The Racoon only looks harmless. They are quite vicious.

+Rick Roscoe, raccoons can be ferocious only when cornered, frightened, protecting their young or are sick. Most often raccoons want nothing to do with humans, dogs and sometimes cats. However, they can co-exist with cats with minimal conflict, but the risk for harm is there but quite low.

They can be ferocious if provoked, yup. However, I've watched wild ones here chilling out with skunks and cats, even playing at the door with our dog (we don't touch them or let the dog near outside). They're usually more scared of the cat and baby skunks, despite the fact they could seriously mess it up. Plus, that's a young one.

Racoons are way better than cats. They're smarter. They have fingers. What's not to love? You'd think at first. But then you realize that being smart and having fingers means you're a whole lot of trouble. Like a baby, a really strong baby that can jump from tree to tree and kill your cats.

Racoons have a app. 5 yr. memory. A racoon mom brought her young up the balcony for me to see. The young racoons return every spring. The young racoons are familiar with my dogs' and cats' scent and do not harm my pets when outdoors. The older raccoon will hiss at my dogs when outside for a pee. The dogs retreat and for 20 years no one got into a fight.

A few years ago, my big cat Pookey managed to pull open the sliding glass door and went outside. It was dark out as I searched around the house. When I aimed the flashlight under the deck, I saw two sets of eyes looking back. It was Pookey side by side with a raccoon. Pookey was terrified of being outside so I had to leave the sliding glass door open enough for him to come back in, which he did.

I totally agree, I have the same thing. I have two cats (sisters) that get into fights sometimes with the local raccoons and always win. I understand the need for worry, but raccoons are not known for there love of cat meat.

Adam Ant My cat use to fight with them, until one of them took a very nasty chomp out of his hind quarter. He isn't so brave with them anymore. Before you say it, he usually beats up other cats when he gets in fights (Not that I encourage him to). Most female cats stand no chance with him.

vrccb - These little bears (Procyon lotor) are found mainly in North America. However there's a large and growing population in Germany, Russia and Japan. There are multiple resources online outlining their behaviours, diet, habitat and distribution outside of North America.

The raccoon is curious about the cats and stood up to get a better look at them. We have continually invaded the habitats of these and so many wild animals, that some have adapted to "living in human areas" to survive. Raccoons are one such animal. The vacant house behind me has a family of raccoons living in it. I find their tracks in my yard sometimes if the yard is muddy enough. We have cats running loose in the neighborhood. In the three years the raccoons have lived in that old house, there have been no reports of cats, children or anything else being attacked by the raccoons. You just have to use a secure lid on your trash and if you have feed bowls outside for your pets, they will help themselves to any "leftovers" they can find.

Wow, you are so lucky to have such amazing creatures on your doorstep! We have foxes, and Squirrels, Ducks with the babies in Spring, hiding from the magpies, oh and Hedgehogs, that's about it in my area. Trolls, every animal carries disease, get a grip and move on with your sanitizer spray.....
