Boyd is a friendly young raccoon with a sweet gentle nature who enjoys learning how to earn treat rewards through the use of clicker training. I began by capturing him when he motioned his arms up then through approximations free shaped him to clap his paws then eventually when he would rub his nose. Once I've observed fluency, I put the behaviour on cue (swiping my finger on my nose) and then him doing the same.
Throughout the video you'll hear a click sound, which serves as a marker when training, meaning "That is correct; a reward is following." Animals who are taught with this method will learn new behaviours (aka tricks) incredibly at a rapid rate and thus will try to figure out how to get the trainer to make the "clicking" sound to earn their rewards; this is very fun for them as it engages their "seeking circuit". Boyd was extremely fast to catch on.
NOTE: Our rescue raccoons resides in a region where there hasn't been a case of raccoon rabies for over three decades which is tracked by the local public health department.
We are fortunate to be able to observe and professional work with a variety of wildlife species since we reside next to a protected wildlife preserve. Our rescue raccoons lounge and play on our terrace as well as use it as a thoroughfare. No children nor pets are ever harmed, especially the wild animals captured in these videos.
Please note that none of the raccoons are our pets thus please follow your local wildlife guidelines for the safety of humans and animal wildlife alike.

Awesome Opossum Not really, operant conditioning is as simple as waiting for a desired behavior and add something in hopes of the behavior happening more often which is shown here. On the other side you could wait for an undesired behavior and add something in hopes of the behavior continuing less.
@cyrusmontanez9853

Although I wouldn’t consider a raccoon “very smart” just because he learned this after all a mouse can learn from operant conditioning.
@southernmercy5962
@southernmercy5962 6 лет назад
Cyrus Montanez Uh, no. They can actually tell what's in front of them BEFORE seeing it by holding the palms of their hands out. It's not necessarily begging, not all of the time.

@@cyrusmontanez9853 Raccoons are as smart as around a 3 year old and they can remember how to solve complex puzzles for like two years. They are smarter than cats and dogs, and as smart as some primates. If they ever became completely domesticated they might do well becoming helper animals because they are just that bright. And unlike spider monkees, they don't travel in troupes so they would suffer from loneliness a lot less. If you are meeting their needs for companionship that is.

It doesn't take long for them to respond to the clicker, does it. I'm envious; we live in the desert and while we've had lots of chipmunks and rabbits, even a couple kangaroo rats show up, it's not at all regular. I tried to get a very healthy coyote to come and get some kibbles, but he was too shy and their appearances aren't at all routine.

A recompensa segue. Nossos guaxinins são resgates que reabilitamos. Treinamos cada comportamento diferente, o que nos ajuda a identificá-los onde quer que retornem, uma vez que foram soltos na natureza.

@PhantomQueenOne
@PhantomQueenOne 5 лет назад
My one bird understands what I want of him. I do have to chase him off the top of the cage sometimes with the end of the broom (as it's over 6' high). Even it I never touch him with it. I'm just pressuring him off "Baby, come off of there right now!". If he happens to feel like it I will say "Baby, go in your cage" and he hops in. Sometimes he won't and I have to pick him up. If I have to trim his nails I have to hold him on his back which most birds hate. He doesn't struggle as much now because he knows I won't hurt him. And it helps that I finished hand feeding and weaning him. He really understands quite a lot of English. Like "do you want a bath?" he will stand on the edge of the sink waiting for me to turn on the tap and plug the drain. He does have to be his idea first, as he sits on my head when I'm washing the bird dishes if he wants one. He can't go in with soap of course. The cockatiels were never touched as chicks so I have to use leather gloves on them. They have stopped freaking out when I look at them, and only freak out when I'm scooping the shavings out of their cage (they are even better now than they used to be) or trying to catch them. It's pretty scary for them I guess. Now they sing, chatter, dance and whistle when I talk to them were at first they were always afraid. They were giving to me by people that couldn't stand their 'noise'. They are parrots, they do make noise! I have gotten them to use 'indoor voices' except when they are very afraid. My other 'teils climbed all over me because they were used to being handled. I had to tame a wild caught cockatoo that was terrified of gloves. I made her into a bird burrito with a soft towel and scritched her uncovered head. First she hissed, and then she lifted her crest to let me. This went on for a few weeks until she finally became calm. I could never touch her with gloves though, because they frightened her. I got bit a couple of times, but she got used to me.

Am I the only one terrified of raccoons? Seriously anything with claws, teeth and thumbs not to mention reason is a dangerous thing. There's a pack of them in my apartment and i choose to avoid any and all interaction with them. They have the unpredictability of a cat and the cunning of a psychopath.
@WeeklyWhiskers
@WeeklyWhiskers 8 лет назад
+Consumed by deceit Raccoons typically will avoid humans as long as they're not cornered, protecting offspring or sick. Any animal (feral or captive domestic dogs and cats as well as wildlife) can be dangerous so it's wise to maintain a respectable level of fear and distance oneself with any animal that one is uncertain of to avoid being harmed. If there's a pack of raccoons living at your apartment complex, chances are someone's feeding them or garbage is not secured to discourage scavenging. Both need to be addressed to help the wildlife move along. As wildlife professionals, we understand how to properly wean the animals so that they can integrate back into the wildlife without relying on humans. In closing, humans become fearful of what they do not understand thus it can make an enormous difference to spend some time learning about what's misunderstood to help not only allay fears but protect oneself from harm if that potential exists. Thanks for commenting.
@consumedbydeceit5942
@consumedbydeceit5942 8 лет назад
I've been around them for 4 years, and I've learned a lot from their behavior with my own encounters and you're right I definitely do keep a distance. Our apartments were built on what was brush and trees and about half of it was left there for "scenery". The manager is aware and refuses to do anything about it but I do understand we're on their land. I don't underestimate wild animals but I'm also not ignorant about the situation. Looks like they're here to stay so I've made my peace with them hell the probably already recognize me at this point. I let them be and it goes both ways.
@WeeklyWhiskers
@WeeklyWhiskers 8 лет назад
+Consumed by deceit it's a pity the apartment manager isn't willing to address the issue. It not only puts the humans potentially at risk but also the wildlife. Thanks for recognising that we share our environment with wildlife and doing your part to co-exist with them safely as well.

Is it just me or are raccoons generally pretty friendly with humans? They don't usually run off if you don't shoo them away and they're not hostile. At least from my experience. I mean, at my college, you'd think they belong since at night you can see them sitting at the tables eating whatever people leave behind and neither species seems the least bit bothered by the other.
@WeeklyWhiskers
@WeeklyWhiskers 9 лет назад
azenaku typically they're timid around humans. If they're friendly, most often it's because they've been habituated to humans who've fed them which is not ideally good for them for a variety of reasons; some obvious and some not. However, raccoons are not generally aggressive towards humans unless cornered, frightened, a mother protecting her young or ill.
@azenaku
@azenaku 9 лет назад
I suppose I don't mean friendly. Just that they don't seem to bother people or be bothered by people.
@WeeklyWhiskers
@WeeklyWhiskers 9 лет назад
If left alone, they'll live harmoniously amongst humans. They have no interest to "viciously" attack anything unless provoked or fear their life is in danger.
@Jc-cb9ph
@Jc-cb9ph 9 лет назад
Weekly Whiskers Raccoons can become a big problem if they start to get "harmonious" with humans. They can be a threat to animals, will happily tear parts of your house apart, and if they get rabies its a big problem. The best thing to do-- as with most wild animals-- is make sure they do NOT get comfortable with humans. When they do, it usually will mean they need to be put down eventually. If you like them, dont feed them.
@WeeklyWhiskers
@WeeklyWhiskers 9 лет назад
Thanks John collins. We're very well aware of the nature of raccoons since we work with various wildlife species including raccoons. Many of our raccoon visitors were once either orphaned requiring help to be reintegrated back into the wild or were soft released after being rehabbed. In closing, we haven't had a documented case of raccoon rabies in our State for over 25 years.
