Cattle Egret get around! I'm filming in Okeechobee Florida - ground-zero for the amazing story of the wander-lusting and adaptable Cattle Egret in the United States. In one of the great tales of avian range expansion in modern times these egrets colonized the world under their own power.

Meadowlarks are trying to star in this film. When I was a kid these cattle egret birds were everywhere. I told my mom, “these birds look like they should be named “Fred” so now we still call them Freds. They will get on a tree in a group and turn the tree white. They love my cows and sometimes take a ride. If they try to ride a horse the horse doesn’t like it. One of my horses loves to see them flying. He sees a big group of them then trots towards them. They will let people get close on horses, cars, trucks or tractor but on foot they fly away.

I've noticed that when I'm on foot or on my bike out in the wild they are very skittish and take off when I approach, but in town they walk right alongside cars at red lights. Interesting birds. BB

I think the cow at the beginning was embarrassed to be filmed with Egret on it's back and flicked it off with its tail!

I really enjoy watching them follow the plow tractors and harvesters around here (Glades county) and I get quite the large following when I pull the cutter behind my tractor. When the cane gets burnt, these "cow birds" have it down to a science to go in after the burn/harvest and absolutely gorge themselves. It's a treat to watch them flock all together when on a break or when full and then they all come to the caloosahatchee behind my house for a drink and rest. Love your documentaries.

Theyre cool and majestic birds. I always see them on the wet grassland near my home. They always hang around on the back of the cows. Since its a wet grassland here, little egrets, great egrets, and herons are joining their flock. Plus there are also these tiny birds called oxpeckers, they also hang around on the back of the cows here with the egrets. Nature is so cool and pretty isnt it?

Thank you for another great vid! Wonderful footage and very interesting. I love herons/egrets. We have a lot of egrets and blue herons here in south central PA along the Susquehanna River. They also go to the man-made lake at a nearby wildlife preserve. They're the reason I bought my first pair of binoculars and got into birdwatching!

I'm thrilled you created this video on the Awesome Cattle Egret !! The story you shared on these hardy little birds was fascinating. Wonderfully presented, filled with great history tidbits as well as amazing information ! I love how regal their breeding plumage is, totally transforming what one may feel is an ordinary looking bird. You really honored this bird by your excellent video !!

I was recently on the big island of Hawaii and saw a white bird sitting on top of a horse. I’m not sure if it was a cattle egret but it sure fits the description! There are so many invasive species on that island, I’d not be surprised if it were imported in by humans but you were saying here that they are strong flyer so perhaps they found a way to Hawaii on their own?
@MyBackyardBirding
@MyBackyardBirding 2 года назад
Good eye, I believe they were introduced on purpose for the livestock back in the 60's but then like a lot of things brought into islands got way out of hand due to lack of predators and outcompete the local birds etc. BB

Your information is incorrect. Those birds were here for thousands of years.
