So, let me get this straight. People are saying that Ray, knowing the drive shaft had a very good chance of separating, took the truck to the street and ran the risk of it actually coming apart while driving, which could and probably would have been catastrophic to not only the truck, but possibly could have caused an accident with other vehicles. Now that would be some dedication to making a video. Ridiculous assertion. The diagnosis and fix of the drive shaft and related components was interesting.

1:09 his excuse for not faking the video is that: he THOUGHT he was "annihilating the ring gears" of the customers vehicle by continuing to drive it in that condition. And he had no idea the driveshaft was making the noise and that he was NOT causing further damage to the ring gears. Ahhh, the integrity of intentional damage to a customers vehicle
@RenniaTrayvold
@RenniaTrayvold 27 дней назад
I mean i suppose you could parts cannon the vehicle till you find the problem. Or spend days tearing it apart until you find the actual problem... or, you know... test a hypothesis with the intention of replacing said defective parts. If he expected the ring gears to be bad, he almost certainly intended to replace them. At that point a little more use to confirm the diagnosis was of little consequence.
@epstein_isnt_dead7726
@epstein_isnt_dead7726 27 дней назад
@@RenniaTrayvold right. Because the ring gears coming apart wouldn't cause more damage to additional parts!! I mean, putting it on the lift and putting your hand on the rear axle would show how loose the driveshaft was before doing additional damage to "test a hypothesis". Always start with the LEAST intrusive test, especially when it takes less than 5 minutes. You don't START with "let's drive it until something breaks"
@RenniaTrayvold
@RenniaTrayvold 26 дней назад
@@epstein_isnt_dead7726 weird. That was not the impression of his plan that I got from either this vid or the original video... but I suppose his phrasing doesn't come across to all folks.
@epstein_isnt_dead7726
@epstein_isnt_dead7726 26 дней назад
@@RenniaTrayvold how many ways are there to interpret "I kept driving it thinking it was annihilating the ring gears"? Pretty hard to not take that exactly as he said it. And his actions of driving the vehicle while it was making all of the noise is further confirmation of those intentions. What did you hear that made you think otherwise?

@@toddp3314 Agreed, no reason to film the carrier bearing assembly coming apart. I've been in a car that lost it's propshaft while traveling. Little Morris Minor, long story involving a gearbox from an MG that had a longer rear housing than the original, and a very VERY dodgy shortening of the propshaft by an amateur (not me, I was only about 8yo, just going along for the test ride.) Propshaft dropped at the en-shortening point (gearbox end) while doing about 60-80kph (40-50mph), proceeded to embed itself into the road and bounced violently around with absolutely no control. Noise was intense, as was the vibrations and dust as detritus filled the cabin. Worse was the long, thirsty "walk of shame" along the thankfully deserted dirt road back to get a tow.

I use two gopros on rubber magnet mounts. One test drive they were on the bumper looking forward, and the other test drive (I parked and moved them in the parking lot) they were on the right side looking sideways at the driveshaft and left towards the axle from the front side. That's that footage that we see in this video. The shaft ripping apart scene was from the right mounted most forward camera that was pointed at the driveshaft. I was looking to capture the rear wheels locking up combined with pinion slip because that's what I though was happening in the differential. The driveshaft was where it was suppose to be when I moved the cameras to the side of the truck. I was going in back and forth circles on the gravel and in between reverse and drive it came apart.

Ray love the videos on your channels keep it up. One thing I noticed in this under vehicle video is when the truck moves forward or backwards the rear differential where the drive shaft attatches moves alot up and down pulling the shaft away from the center point connection near the carrier bearing. I had the same thing happen on my truck the movement of the differential pulling up and down weakened the connection causing the failure of both the carrier bearing and the center connection point of the drive shaft. A set of Traction bars that connect to the axle housing and the frame solved the issue. if you watch the footage closely you can see the movement and when you shifted to reverse the change in movement caused the total failure when you shifted back to drive.

You said you usually check the car over before you test drive. Would you have spotted the broken holder upper (carrier bracket)of the drive shaft if you had done that check first?

Ray.. No need justify the "Noodle Truck".... Glad it didn't happen to the customer Who drove it to the Shop or to you while driving it around the parking lot. Fantastic repair video on it. Dorman for the win!

Repair guy sees broken car breaking worse isn't news. The entire reason the repair industry exists is to work on stuff that's breaking.I do believe the family business is fake though because I have a hard time understanding how this guy got married. His better three-quarters is obviously destined for sainthood.

Greetings: Laws of physics did not lie. On another note; in such experiences I have diagnosed , I do a visual based on my audible analysis...which tends 2 B very accurate. I heard the audio in the presentation and could have diagnosed it without looking at it. Thx 4 the share. Keep up the good work.

If you had enough time to place cameras under the vehicle. You should have had enough time to see that the carrier bearing support was missing. This is hilarious.

It's unfortunate that you didn't show any video on the road from the camera that was used to record the actual break point; an odd decision. It's very interesting to see the deteriorating shaft though as you drive.

I saw that happen as a kid. My parents were building a house on twenty acres with no sewer. Dad had a septic tank an leach lines laid out. The lines needed a bed of gravel which was brought in on a dump truck. The gravel was dumped where my brother and could load it into a wheelbarrow and lay in the bedding in the leach lines. When the driver finished dropping the load, he lowered the bed and put the truck in gear to leave. The drive shaft dropped off at the differential end and just spun.

Thank you for the explanation. The additional video here helps understand the previous one. Don't knock some of those who questioned because we did not see the full - but at same time there is no problem in asking questions as long as it respectful. Besides Mr Ray would never pull a furphy - Mrs Wife is there to keep him in line. The only thing Mr Ray lies about is how much coffee he drinks for real.

I certainly thought what are the chances he set a camera to watch a driveline he never suspected.

Drive shafts absolutely will fall out. My brother was driving his modified/lifted k5 blazer when he was slowing down for a stop sign at the bottom of a hill. He sheared off both ends of the front drive shaft (full time 4x4). As it was bouncing around it took out his trans coolant lines, fuel and brake lines. What a mess to put back together.

Heck I would have done the same. If a customer says Noise from underneath, I would first hang my magnetic Cameras underneath the isolate the noise. It was a coincidence you got a catastrophic failure in the process. Luckily the drive shaft didn't decide to pole vault and cause extensive damage.
