CB500X 39T Sprocket Swap - Full Chain & Sprocket Replacement

Last week I swapped out the stock 41-tooth rear sprocket on my Honda CB500X for a new 39-tooth replacement.
Several years ago, I had swapped my front drive sprocket from the stock 15-tooth to a 16-tooth. That upgrade gave me a 6.25% reduction in RPM, expanding the gearing ratio, and reducing vibrations on the highway. I really enjoyed the upgrade! However, I also lost some of the slow-speed maneuverability while riding off-road.
This year I decided to return the front drive sprocket to a 15T, but swap out the 41T rear sprocket for a 39T. This gave me a 2.5% reduction in RPM which was great for the highway, while retaining all the off-road capabilities of this small adventure bike. I couldn't been happier!

sorry to rain on your parade, but your final drive ratio math is off: stock = 41/15 = 2.73 (not 2.66 as you stated) modified with 16T front = 41/16 = 2.56 (not 2.5 as you stated) modified with 39T rear = 39/15 = 2.60 (which you stated correctly) ...really simply math... just divide the rear tooth count by the front tooth count for the final drive ratio.

I did a swap this summer for a 38 rear sprocket and it totaly transformed the bikes rpm and reduced vibrations at highway speeds ! Sheers from Sweden

@@MotoPhotoAdventures i did use Oem 112 linked chain and removed 2 links , i do not experience a big differens in acceleration but I no longer looking for 7th gear, and the speedometer is spot on with the gps speed now 😀 By the way...I did the Rallyraid level 1 suspension upgrade like you 2 years ago and the differens in comfort is very noticeble! Do you have any plans on upgrade your bike to a new 2023 one with 19 inch frontwheel, or some other bike? I am kind of curious of the new cb500x! Sheers

@@hva19003006 hey, just got a used 22, and I’m considering doing the 16T front and a 39T rear. I’m not mechanical, but I want the advantages of both changes just want to check in and see if you have any regrets now, a year later. Are you still getting low end torque without any problems as well as higher speeds without vibrations? Thanks

On Honda shift shafts, they usually put a punch mark on the end (it faces you) and the split in the shift lever is centered over the punch mark...now it's perfect without need of marking the position! :-)

I did a 16 tooth about 2 years ago after I watched your video and I was never really happy with it. I'm changing the sprockets and chain today and found this video. I mostly ride on the highway and occasionally ride on some farm roads around my house. The 16 tooth really killed my passing ability. I commute on a state highway with a 55 mph speed limit and a lot of traffic, so I need quick 75 to 85 mph spurts to get around a few people and the 16 tooth wasn't cutting it. It did cut down on the little bit of vibration that I get over 80 mph.

I went with the 16 tooth primary and for my cb500x I may go with a 39 tooth rear bcuz I don't hardly ever go off road.

@@terrypapineau6993 if you watch the video, I go into details about the differences between the two setups. Basically, the 16/41 is the perfect long-distance street setup. But you lose some of the low-end torque for off-road use. The stock 15/41 is probably best for true off-roading. I fould the 15/39 to be the sweetspot between the two. But watch both videos and determine which setup is best for you! Oh...and help us out by giving both a thumbs-up!!! 🙂

I just went through your playlist and didn't see it -- are you still thinking of doing one? I'm getting a used '22 in June, and thinking about doing both front and back (despite having zero skills). i'll be doing mostly tarmac, but definitely 20% or so gravel, and I was worried of losing that low end with the 16 tooth sprocket switch. I am very happy to hear that with a chain and rear sprocket switch-out, this isn't inevitable!

Thanks for the kind comment! I just sold my beloved CB500X after 60K miles of smiles!!! I didn't realize when I bought it how much I would be riding off-road. I did the Trans-America Trail (TAT), the Northeast Backcountry Discovery Route (NEBDR), and the South Carolina Adventure Route (SCAR) on it, which are primarily off-road trails meant for more dirt-oriented bikes. My "Trinity" as I named her never complained. But riding with my buddies on more off-road capable bikes made me realize I might need something different. When a gently used Aprilia Tuareg 660 (almost the same exact weight as the CB500X but with 21" front tire and way more suspension) came along at a price that was too hard to pass up, I made the switch. But I have zero regrets for having the CB500X first. It was an AMAZING bike!!!

@@elwood62 plus the later model CB500X had a larger 19" front tire, as does the new NX500. So it'll be way more off-road capable if you do decide to take off on some dirt roads! 🙂

I;m an avid Mountain biker quite familiar with gearing changes. When going to the 16t front sprocket did you have to add a link to the chain or could you adjust out the difference?

Hi Rick! When upgrading the front sprocket from 15t to 16t, there were zero changes needed! The stock chain still worked perfectly and was within normal limits. Naturally the rear axle adjustments started out a touch on the shorter end of the range...but still within limits. As the chain and sprockets expanded (as they do with normal wear), the rear adjustments returned to middle of the range. Having said all that, switching to a 15t front sprocket and a 39t rear sprocket, the rear axle was an inch or two further back. As the chain and sprockets expanded with wear, the rear axle moved to behind the "normal" limits. There was still plenty of room to adjust the chain properly. But it's something to be aware of. If I were to order the 15/39 combination again, I would take one link out of the chain.

Thanks for the great videos, I ride in NYC and I want the most torque, I hardly ever use 1st gear, which set up will get me moving faster when the light turns green and which set up won't lose too much top end speed on the highway?

Hello NYC!!! If you want the most torque getting off the line, keep the stock 15/41 setup. If you want to lower your RPM at highway speeds for a less "buzzy" commute, swap the front sprocket to a 16T. If you want the best of both worlds, for my personal style of riding I found the 15/39 combo to be the best setup. Sprockets are relatively inexpensive. So if you try it and don't like it, you can always swap back!

So I was going the 16T route but the sprocket is delayed yet again. I ordered March 3, 2022 and now they are not sure if they will get till September of 2022. So, perhaps the 39T is the way for me to go. But I have a 2020. Do you know if our sprocket bolt patterns are the same. I could not tell what your your bike is but it does not seem to have the windshield cross bar and the foot peg assembly looks different. Thanks in advance. Doug

Hi Doug! I am REALLY enjoying the 39T rear sprocket...even more than the 16T front that I used for several years. Mine is a 2013. I can't confirm...but I've heard the bolt pattern on the rear changed when they made a bunch of changes to the bike in 2019. I would imagine the 2022 isn't the same either. But you'll have to do a little research to confirm that. As far as I know, the 16T has stayed the same.

Is it feasible doing 16t on front and 39t on back? Would that be super effective for motor way use or kill it? Don't do much adventuring in my area and mainly use the cb500x for city and motorbike use.

Hi Chazza! Yes it's feasible to do both. Although you probably won't have much power in 6th gear. Have you tried the 16T first? You might find it's enough. I have also heard of others who installed a 17T front sprocket. But try the 16T. I found it very comfortable for Highway commuting. Then if you need more you can add the 39T later.

What equation did you use for the RPM reduction? For going to 39T I thought it'd be 1 - 39/41 = 4.9% reduction in RPM, but you said 2.5%.

That's awesome! You're going to love this bike. And the 2022 model has a lot of excellent advances! I'm sure similar sprocket upgrades are possible. But I don't know if the part numbers will be the same. However, it would be an easy thing to research. Just check with your local Honda dealer, or go to www.partzilla.com. Look up the sprocket for a 2013, or a 2019, and compare it to the same part number for a 2022. If it's the same number, it's a perfect fit! Even if it's not the same exact number, however, there's a good chance it will fit. We know Honda hasn't changed the motor or wheels. So it's unlikely they would change the sprockets.

@@hazlitt1 that's awesome! I took about a 10-year break from riding after getting married. And Jason took a 30-year hiatus. He bought his new bike a few months before we did the Trans-America Trail!!! If he can get back on that horse, I KNOW you can! By the way, the CB500X is already pretty low. I'm 5'7" with a 30" inseam and have no problem touching the ground on both sides. I would ride it first before you decide to lower it. If you decide to lower it, it's easy to do. It just means you'll be limited on where you can ride off-road due to the lower ground clearance. My next CB500X I will probably get the Rally Raid Level 2 kit, which makes it 2" taller. I have the Rally Raid Level 1 suspension upgrade on my bike now, which improved the quality of the suspension, but didn't change the ride height.

It's been done before, Brent! I don't think it's for me though. I mentioned a 2.5% reduction in rpm with this setup, and a 6.25% reduction with the 16T front sprocket. Combining the two yield's an 8.6% reduction...which is great if all you're doing is cruising on highways. Since I do both on and off road, I believe the this new setup is going to be "juuuust right" for me! 🙂

@@randomkadrmas2630 I think around 200-300 less than they were at stock. Not a ton...but it makes a difference in the "buzziness", while not robbing the bike of too much torque on the low end. Swapping the front sprocket for the 16T reduced it by around 500.

I'm looking for starter bikes. The planned usage would be 98% road, 2% gravel road. I like the idea of a sprocket swap for more comfortable motorway cruising at the expense of less off road capability (I'll use my Quad for off roading). How did this sprocket swap affect your motorway cruising and comfortable speed?

That's awesome! The CB500X is a perfect bike for your situation. And I would definitely a sprocket swap for a more relaxed feel at highway speeds. If you don't, the engine will be reving pretty high! I was still able to do quite a bit of off-roading when I wanted to. But it made the bike SO MUCH better at highway speeds!

I'm so sorry to hear that @boatbyrd. I know it's frustrating! Unfortunately Honda changed something in the sprocket design between the 2013-2018 and the 2019-current models. Mine is a 2013. I've got links in the description where to get them for those years. But I have heard the 16T sprockets for the newer models are harder to come by. Maybe try contacting some of the manufacturers directly, like JT Sprockets? Hopefully they can tell you which ones are compatible with the new model CB500X? Best of luck!!!

Some find this bike's odometer is not accurate from the factory and a slight gearing change corrects it. However, whether you change to a new gearing ratio like I suggest in this video, or decide to stay with stock gearing, you can always install a small plug-and-play electronic device that is easy to set up, and allows you to calibrate your speedometer to be 100% accurate. Hi Doug! Absolutely. For bikes with 500cc or less, it's generally considered perfectly safe to have a clip style chain. They don't have the power of the big bikes, which could potentially "throw" a clip. Up until this chain, I've always had clip-style chains. With over 50K miles on my CB500X, I've never had a single problem.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'm still using the stock 112 link chain without any trouble, even though the axle and rear tire sit further back. I have not tried it. But I believe a 110 link chain would be too short when new. It's been recommended to me to buy the stock 112 link chain and simply remove one link before assembly on the bike. But please report back if you find the 110 link works for you!

I got to thinking, if my math makes sense it's like taking a link out of the top and bottom so it will be a single link closer to the front... And that would be 1.25" which would be too short, not enough room for the axle to go forward that much! So a 112 it will be. I won't mess with taking out a link in case I put the 41 stock back on. @@authenticsailor9808 happy to help! Your logic seems correct. I've got thousands of miles on my 112 link chain. It was new when I replaced the sprocket in this video 11 months ago. It has stretched over the 11 months and thousands of miles I've been riding since then. But I just keep backing the bolt out and so far I've been able to keep proper slack on the chain without any trouble.

I'm still using the original chain. But the rear axle is definitely pushed to it's outer limits. I think cutting one link off the chain would work better if you're able to do that.

I haven't had any issues yet. Although the axle is adjusted an inch or two further back than normal to take up the extra slack in the chain. Next time I think I'll remove an extra link off the chain to compensate.

Honda changed the rear wheel from 2020. The 39t no longer fits. JT now supply a 36t rear and both front options 15t and 16t.

Absolutely!!! I did the entire Mid-Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route (MABDR) with the new setup (mostly off-road) and LOVED IT: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o2uw_ur3j00.html. So those are two different "tests" of the new setup. And I can say I am VERY happy with it! This will be my new standard for this bike.

Great question, Richard! I didn't do the math. Someone much smarter than I did it. Bear in mind you have to take all the teeth (front and back) into consideration with both equations. Hi Ben! Great to hear from you. I'm 99% sure the sprocket model I have listed fits all the CB500X from 2013-2021. I don't know if they made any changes to the 2022 model. But since these bikes all use the same engine, I'm pretty sure they kept the drive-sprocket the same in all of them. Although I heard one person say the rear sprocket is slightly different on the new 2022 model. I hope this helps. If you are mostly riding highways, that should be fine. But you will lose a little low end "grunt" in first gear for off-road riding. I liked 16/41 and 15/39 the best for my style of riding. But I like some off-road riding too. Each person is different. Try it and see if you like it!

@@eriksaenz21 I don't know if the 39 rear fits a 2019 - present. I know it fits 2013 (my model) - 2018 because the bike was unchanged those years. But I believe I read in the comments that someone found it would not fit the newer models. So you may want to research that a little, or contact JT Sprockets about it. The speedometer on my bike has never been 100% accurate, even with factory gearing. In fact, most bikes don't have a very accurate speedometer. I personally use a Garmin GPS on all my bikes, which gives the correct speed, and even tells me what the speed limit is on the road I'm on. So I don't really look at my speedometer. But if you would like to make sure your speedometer is accurate, I can recomment this simple plug-and-play device: amzn.to/2Pahs8C.

@@nateryan7041 Hi Nate! Happy to help any way I can. Honda made a few small changes to the bike after 2018. So 2013-2018 are pretty much the same except for cosmetics, 2019-2022 are slightly different. And 2023-present has some more changes. However the engine, drive train, and chassis are all pretty much the same. The changes are primarily in the suspension and brakes. So if you're looking for torque specs for the front or rear sprocket, or the rear axle, etc...they should all be the same no matter what year. Again, I'm not at home to verify. But it would be very strange for the torque specs to change on a component that has not changed over the years. Mine is a 2013. So if you don't get an answer back from other research, I'm happy to look it up when I get home. Just let me know which bolt specifically you are looking for the specs on. Cheers!

Back again for more questions. After watching your videos on 16 tooth front sprocket and 39 tooth rear sprocket I decided to go the rear sprocket route on my 2022 CB500X. Reached out to JT Sprockets with no luck. Went to local Honda dealer to see what options they might have and came up with nothing. After a phone call with the honda dealer parts department and JT Sprockets we were told that they have gotten out of metric sprockets all together. They gave us some options to try but with no success. Only option was to go to a place in Georgia that custom makes aluminum sprockets. Want to stay with hardened metal sprocket. After all this what is your opinion about the 16 tooth front sprocket? I will be riding primarily road with an occasional dirt fire road. What issues if any are associate to front sprocket change? Thought I heard mention of 16 tooth rubbing somewhere? Any help would be appreciated

Hi Daniel! Ahhh, yes...the troubles of buying a new model year bike. :-) In a couple years someone will be making a variety of sprockets that everyone will be using on the 2022 CB500X. But you get to be the "early adopter" who has to figure out your own solutions! Having said that, I still think it's quite possible that the options available for the earlier model bikes might still fit. You can't hurt anything by trying. And most places have free return policies if it doesn't work. If I were in your shoes, I'd order a 39T JT Sprockets and see if it fits! Having said that, your use-case would actually be pretty perfect for the 16T front sprocket upgrade. I absolutely loved that setup when I did mostly highway/pavement riding. When we did the Trans-America Trail, I still had the 16T sprocket and had no trouble doing all the dirt roads, mud, and steep mountain passes like in this episode: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L3tf5pl2HCI.html. I think you'll really like the more relaxed "attitude" of the bike on pavement with the 16T sprocket...and won't have any trouble doing a little light off-roading too. The 16T fits no problem without any rubbing. I through mine was rubbing, but it was because I had the half-moon shaped metal chain guard installed upside down. Once I flipped that right-side up, everything fit like a glove with no modifications. Also note that it's super easy to change the front sprocket. So keep the 15T in the garage. And if you ever decide to do a big off-road trip down the road, you can just swap back! Yes, people say you should always change the chain and both sprockets at the same time, which is indeed good advice. But if you change them out separately, it's really not that big of a deal. Have fun with the new bike!!!

Hi John! I don't know anything about the 2022. However, as far as I know, the drive train and sprockets have not changed from 2013 to 2022. The bike got some upgrades (19" front tire, etc.) in 2018. But to my knowledge the sprockets are the same. Order one and try it! If you order from Amazon and it doesn't work, just send it back. Let us know what you find out! @@MotoPhotoAdventures No, the rear sprocket link above will not fit the 2022 CB500X. The 2019 and newer CB500X uses a different rear sprocket than the 2018 and earlier models. The JTR1316.39 39T rear sprocket I ordered would not work on my 2022 CB500X.

Yeah...lots of bikes are hard to get right now. Yamaha T7 is worse than the 500X. KTM makes cool bikes. But I have so many friends that have had mechanical issues with them. I'd much rather have the reliability of a Honda or Yamaha. Still, if you can't get one, what else are you supposed to do?

Hi Jamie! This is my 2013 CB500X with over 50k miles on it. I'm currently running Continental TKC80 120/70-17 up front and TKC70 Rocks 170/60-17 in back. For best performance, I recommend a slightly narrower tire in back. But I love the looks of a fat tire! I find the TKC80 to be an excellent tire up front if you do any kind of off-road riding. It actually performs quite well, and lasts fairly long as a front tire. I've had the TKC 80 in back as well, and it just doesn't last long at all! I've also had the Shinko 804 in back. It has similar performance, but lasts a little longer than the TKC80, and costs less. But although I enjoy a lot of off-road riding, this bike is also my daily commuter. So knobby tires just wear out too fast in the back. The Shinko 705 (front and back) is my preferred tire if I know I'll be doing long distance road trips...best performance for the cost IMHO. But they aren't the greatest off-road. This new TKC70 Rocks seems to be a really nice sweet spot in off-road performance, with descent longevity on the pavement. Although it's not an inexpensive tire. Hope this helps!

And what about the Tacho ? If change a Sproket, the ECU can not calculate the Speed correct. If change the front Sproket one Teeth more, the Dashboard will show you a less Speed.

This is correct. However, most motorcycle speedometers aren't very accurate anyway, even brand new from factory. Plus, even changing tires can sometimes change the speedometer accuracy. This is why I always have a GPS on my motorcycle and follow the speedometer reading from that device instead of the speedometer. But if it bothers you to have a speedometer that isn't accurate, just order one of these: SpeedoDRD DRD-3 from 12 oClock Labs - amzn.to/2Pahs8C. It's a simple plug-in device to recalibrate your speedometer. Thanks for watching. That depends on your riding style, and the types of roads you ride on! I would watch this video, then watch my other one about the 16T upgrade: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-icaJFIgS_a0.html. I've used both extensively. And for my style of riding, about 50/50 street vs off-road, I'm sticking with the 39T rear upgrade. But it's totally up to you.

I haven't had a chance to measure yet. But I just got back from a trip with lots of off-road (including deep sand), as well as lots of pavement. I can report that I REALLY like this 39T rear sprocket upgrade...even better than the 16T front sprocket. Although not as reduced at highway speeds, the rpms are still lower and give the bike a more relaxed personality on pavement. However, there's a BIG improvement in the gearing when you go off-road. You get more of that low-end "grunt" back that I've been missing. Highly recommend going this route!

My CB500X is a 2013 with a L1 Rally Raid suspension and a TON of accessories!!! You can find a description and list of additions to my bike on our website at: motophotoadventures.com/the-bikes/. But as far as I know, the rear wheel and drive change hasn't changed from 2013-present. So this same modification should work on any CB500X/F/R. But do your research to make sure.

@@MrWhothefoxthat I hope it helps! I've been very happy with the new setup. I did the entire Trans-America Trail (TAT) using the 16T sprocket upgrade. There were some SERIOUSLY steep and rocky mountain passes where that setup struggled a bit. Check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Im8M-tRJXuY.html. But I made it the whole way, coast to coast. When I got back is when I started trying to calculate a different ratio that would be better than stock but not as extreme as the 16T setup.

HAHA!!! It's really quite simple. If you ride MOSTLY on streets and highways (commuting to work, taking long trips, riding in the countryside on the weekends), then the 16T is the way to go. If you ride 50% or more off-road on dirt, gravel, hills, or tight twisty back-roads, then the 39T rear sprocket is the way to go. I used the 16T sprocket for MANY years and loved it! I took a big trip down through Mexico on it: ru-vid.com/group/PLMpCu16Bx7xOgz2lP1igdN0uYO1Aht3Nz. And I completed the Trans-America Trail on it: ru-vid.com/group/PLMpCu16Bx7xPo7Ro_lGpz0vrw1CP8Gw0l. However, on several occasions riding over extremely difficult terrain, or high mountain passes, I realized the 16T might not be right for me if I'm going to continue riding off-road a lot. That's when I switched to the 39T rear sprocket. And I must say, for my current style of riding, this fits me better. I completed the MABDR on it: ru-vid.com/group/PLMpCu16Bx7xMt2FNebqeF5pcUGy-U1GR0. The MABDR is similar to the TAT, with lots of gravel/dirt roads in the mountains. I found this gearing to be a "sweet spot" halfway between the shorter stock ratio, and the taller 16T ratio. But again, I did successfully complete the TAT with the 16T!!! So again, if you mostly ride street, you can still do some off-roading no problem with the 16T sprocket. However, if you do a LOT of off-road, the 39T might be the better option. I hope this helps...and that my response was fast enough!!! 🙂

I dont have time atm anyways, i will do a cross Thailand tour, bringing one of my little CRFs 250 up north, around 1800km fun ride, unfortunately mostly asphalt but up there are still nice offroads. Wich i can to the TAT some sunny day but i think i will not make it to the other side of the planet again any time soon. My dreamtour from Thailand via Laos, Myanmar, China into Mongolia and from there west into Kazachstan and Russia was destroyed by Corona...this shit messed a lot of my plans up. But will see, it will become better...some day :) I let you know when the 16er is installed and THANKS again, really appreciate guys able to write more as 3 words, not very common nowadays :) cheers from Phuket Thailand

Hi Rockbreaker! Not yet. Just got back from a fun trip and it's been working beautifully. I REALLY like the new setup! As the chain wears, I may end up having to do that. But as of right now, I still have a little bit of wiggle room to work with. 🙂

@@MotoPhotoAdventures PS thanks for the part numbers, just did a test ride with the 15/39 setup on my 500X with a RR2 setup, worked well, I'm leaving Tue to ride the WYBDR so it will get a good test onroad/offroad, but I did it mostly for gas milage...

About 3000 miles into this trip, very happy with the sprockets setup, speedo is way wanky now, if it reads 50mph the gps reads 56mph... be easy to get a ticket...

Switched to this system when I realized I was doing a lot more off-road that I thought I would. But maybe you've found something better? I just learned about this, I'm getting a used '22 in June, and thinking about doing both front and back (despite having zero skills).
