Note: Do on sidestand. This video shows how to adjust the chain slack on a 2014 Honda CBR650F. Also includes how to use track stands to lift your bike, how to wash baked-on mud from motorcycle tires and a super quick update on my project bike.
I make MANY other how-to videos for the CBR650F! Please please please consider subscribing: it helps small channels like me so much and I really appreciate it.

I always come back to check whether I should turn the nut clockwise or counterwise to tighten the chain haha. Thanks! Note to myself: Counterclock wise when looking at the bike from the back. 98nm torque for the rear-wheel nut

Cheers mate! Just purchased a CBR650F as my first big bike. And this video is very helpful to those like myself who are new to motorcycle maintenance/riding in general . 👍

Thank you! Ahh, I actually changed my fork springs and oil, but only recorded removing the forks. 😖

It’s a good idea to turn the bars back to the left before pulling the rear stand.

I still come back to watch this video every time I adjust my chain. Great work on the videos they help a bunch. Do you still have your 650? And if so how many miles do you have by now

Still have it! Not sure, 22k or so? I've been riding a lot less lately. Multiple motorcycles, two jobs, and a baby, hah.

Thanks for the video especially the part about putting the bike on the stand. I’ve been doing it wrong. And for using tire shine on motorcycles is extremely dangerous

Mine's gotten to about the point where yours was at the start, and I'm noticing a bit of a delay going on-off-on with the throttle unless I try to be really smooth. Odd part is, when I measure the chain it looks like I'm just under 35mm, so still in the freeplay range, just at the far end of it. Sort of agree yours looks a little tight afterwards in the video...did you measure it afterwards vs hand check? Guessing you put it to the lowest part of the range (so 25mm of the 25-35mm range)?

How many miles do you put on your bike usually before your chain needs adjusted? I just got mine a month ago and only have 1600 miles so far. Thanks for the vid.
@BurntOnBothEnds
@BurntOnBothEnds 9 лет назад
pinball2002 It probably varies a lot by how you ride and how you maintain it, but I've adjusted mine maybe 3 times so far and I had just over 6k miles on my bike as of the time of this video. Sometimes you can feel a delay in acceleration coming from a slowdown if you have too much slack, but it's easy enough to just check the chain travel when you're off the bike. Nice job with the 1600 miles in a month, sounds like you're a fellow 650F commuter! Thanks for watching.

Thanks. I ride it every day I can, mostly to work and back. Found someone to ride with on ourmoto.net so hopefully I can get even more miles on it :)

Did you have to loosen the 12mm bolt?? i didn't see you do it, so I'm just wondering.
@BurntOnBothEnds
@BurntOnBothEnds 5 лет назад
It's been a while, but if I recall, you want that 12mm nut to stay in place, since backing out that bolt is what lengthens the distance. So stabilizing that 12mm nut may or may not be necessary to accomplish that.
@georgealm27
@georgealm27 7 лет назад
That large axle bolt doesnt need to be tightened with a Torque wrench?
@BurntOnBothEnds
@BurntOnBothEnds 7 лет назад
Specified torque on the axle nut is 98 N-m (72 lbf-ft).
@georgealm27

What paddock stands are they dude? (Sorry if this question has been asked)
@BurntOnBothEnds
@BurntOnBothEnds 8 лет назад
Thanks for watching! I have the Trackside paddock stands from CycleGear. They go on sale all the time for $50 each (front/rear). Not the "best" since the swingarm on the CBR650F is asymmetrical, but it does the same job as more expensive stands for a great price, and no spools needed (though the stand can be flipped around to switch from rubber pads to spool hangers). Would recommend.

looks to me a little too tight.
@BurntOnBothEnds
@BurntOnBothEnds 8 лет назад
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man. ;-) Thanks for watching. For all viewers, the specified chain slack (top to bottom) is 25-35mm (1.0-1.4in) with the bike on its side stand, measured midway between the sprockets. Most people will agree that it is better to error on the loose side of that spectrum.
@7evn
@7evn 7 лет назад
Of course it is to tight of the fact that you body weight was not included. you should always sit on the bike when you do that. and yes the chain is absolutly too tight!
@georgealm27
@georgealm27 6 лет назад
Yeah i did the same tightness after watching your video and when's i did a track day, tech insp. Told me my chain was too tight. I failed to take into account my weight sitting on the bike.
@themarvelousvintage76

@@georgealm27 at the beginning of the video the slack was right...... I own 2018 cb650f 25mm to 35mm its around 1 inches you tight too much chain buddy
@wintersoldier4335
@wintersoldier4335 2 года назад
@@BurntOnBothEnds if you look in the owner's manual you are correct 25 to 35 mm 1 in roughly is fine it does not say to leave the bike on the ground or sit on the bike it's specifically says to use a rear stand to elevate the bike loosen the 12mm lock nuts along with the axle nuts then to adjust accordingly as long as it's within the green zone tighten the lock nuts back of course you were to tighten both sides in accordance with each other lock everything back up tight and take it off the stand you were to measure chain slack at the midpoint between the front and rear sprocket which is approximately 10 in there's actually a piece there on the rear swing arm that you can use that marks the mid-length point if it's an inch to 1 and 3/8 in according to the manual that is the spec for the chain... I would recommend using high impact sockets and socket wrenches for each side of the axle nut that way you can make sure you get roughly 70 ft lb per spec on that axle nut it should almost lift it off of the frame of the rear stand
@koofdome
@koofdome 4 года назад
And then you put the rear stand away, and the chain gets even tighter..... do this on the sidestand.
@drewtaylor6623
@drewtaylor6623 5 лет назад
That chain was to tight before you even adjusted it and also thats with the wheel of the floor
@koofdome

Its little bit too tight........ before was ok if its about 50mm its loose and need tighten up but between 25 to 35mm its the good range too tight will damage transmission.....

Agreed, should also be measured on the ground and not in a stand. Thanks for your comment.
