After having watched La Callas performance at Paris Opera in Dec 1958, I think Cecilia inspired herself her acting technique. She understood how to make the aria a théâtral moment
Age 19 and just...wow. The vocal quality is off the charts, as is the control. In a few more years her note accuracy (muscle and breath control) is even more incredible, regardless of age. An older artist/diva would see this and know that a 400 mph ferrari was coming up her rear view mirror.
Thanks for posting this video of the young Cecilia Bartoli. It really makes you realise how much she has matured in the passing years. Today there is a lot more woman behind! Today she is more free and with greater confidence.
When Cecilia Bartoli or Luciano Pavarotti end a song or aria I have the biggest smile on my face you have ever seen, their joy is my joy.....we are so blessed to have had them both in our lifetime.........
This is such a historic, extraordinary performance, and a version of the great aria such as I, at the very least, have never heard before. It is such a pity that the sound quality is poor. Cecilia was just 19 years old and - I have to say - ravishingly beautiful. If only she had recorded this version for posterity. Bravissima!
BRAVA BRAVISSIMA!!!!
I find it odd that Katia Ricciarelli's face should be described as "the face of envy". To me it looks like the extraordinarily beautiful face of an immensely talented woman who is obviously happy to witness the amazing performance of a fantastic newcomer. In another video of the same TV show, Ricciarelli and Bartoli join forces in the famous "Barcarolle" by Offenbach. From the beginning it becomes visible how truthfully nice Ricciarelli is to Bartoli, taking her hand so that they sing hand in hand, smiling at her quite lovingly, making it clear that she's happy to be singing with Bartoli. In spite of being Italian, Katia Ricciarelli has always displayed a restrained temperament. The fact that she doesn't throw herself at Bartoli's feet doesn't mean that she envies her. It means that she's not given to outbursts. I can hardly imagine her being envious of anyone. I can imagine quite a few people being envious of her. Especially for the breathtaking beauty of her exquisite voice. How fortunate were opera lovers for so many years to be able to follow the work of two singers of mythical stature such as Katia Ricciarelli and Cecilia Bartoli.
People from certain parts of the world have a more restrained temperament tham people from other parts of the world. How exactly saying this can be considered derogatory to anybody at all baffles me. And which of the two groups should take offense: the ones being thought of as restrained or the ones being thought of as unrestrained? In my wildest dreams I cannot see how the word "racist" found its way into the context of the original comment. I cannot even defend myself because I don't know of what.
The 'racist' part isn't about a generalization about Italians. It's more about the phrase, "In SPITE of being Italian..." This sort of phrase doesn't just imply that Italians tend to be more outwardly passionate than other people. It implies that Katia, despite the fact that she, as an Italian is inclined towards outwardly passionate gestures, has fought back her own intrinsic nature as an Italian to become restrained. Also, I'm not agreeing with this person. I'm just trying to show why someone might get offended by that phrase. I actually don't think you intended it that way at all. But given the way some people interpret phrasing of statements, it might be good to be aware of this.
Thank you for your comment. Indeed, nothing in the original comment was intended as criticism of any kind. I still don't understand how can it be that people so often end up being accused of having written a comment with the hidden intention of attacking someone when in reality nothing of the sort crossed his/her mind while writing the comment. Sometimes I think this wole business of sending comments is a waste of time. Anyway, if I go on doing it, I will take your advise and be aware of the phrasing interpretation.
+Leonardo Thierry, I'm sure you are absolutely sincere when you say you had no intention of being disrespectful against neither Italians in general nor Ricciarelli at all. But that is precisely the point. You have that cliché so internalized that you aren't even aware of how racist it is.
Cecilia like most musical geniuses is akin to Mozart. She was BORN complete, perfect, and ready to share her marvellously gifted self with a world not sufficiently well-equipped to apprecate the magnitude of her immense talent and radiant, joyful personality..
