The Jhalak Prize is an annual literary prize for British-resident writers of colour. Its sister award, the Jhalak Children’s and Young Adult’s Prize, makes its debut as part of this event. Prize director Sunny Singh will be joined by the judges for both awards, along with the Jhalak Artists in Residence. The prize is partnered with National Book Tokens. Sunny Singh is Professor of Creative Writing and Inclusion in the Arts at London Metropolitan University, and a critically-acclaimed author.
Jhalak Judges
Yvonne Battle-Felton, whose debut novel Remembered was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction and shortlisted for the Jhalak Prize.
Louise Doughty, who is author of nine novels, most recently Platform Seven. Her best-selling Apple Tree Yard was adapted as a BBC drama.
Peter Kalu has published novels in multiple genres. He has a PhD in Creative Writing from Lancaster University and is a Fellow of the RSA.
Kiran Millwood Hargrave is the Sunday Times-bestselling author of The Mercies, The Deathless Girls, The Girl of Ink & Stars and A Secret of Birds & Bone.
Candy Gourlay whose novel Bone Talk was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and the Costa Prize. Her novels were also listed for the Guardian Children's Book Prize.
Jhalak Artists
Amber Khokhar has worked as an artist for the last 35 years and taught art for the last 20. She has exhibited all over the world.
Ruthine Burton is a London-based artist. She earned a BA in Visual Art from Aberystwyth University and is a mentee on the Pathways into Children’s Publishing programme.
