Loneliness is a tangible, fixable problem, and one that has received increasing attention in the wake of the pandemic because of changes to how we have lived our lives.
On 26 October 2023, the Academy of Social Sciences, in partnership with Cardiff University, co-hosted a panel discussion examining how public policy might do more to uplift the collective wellbeing of Wales.
Chaired by Professor Chris Taylor (Cardiff University), the panel featured Professor Stephan Collishaw (Cardiff University), Beth Cummings (Swansea University), Dr Hefin Gwilym (Bangor University) and Dr Fern Davies (Swansea University) explored issues around loneliness and isolation, including the growing problem of young people's mental ill-health, how emerging policies like Universal Basic Income (UBI) might play a role in shifting the dial on wellbeing, and how Wales’ business community can contribute to communities.
The views and opinions expressed in this event are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Academy of Social Sciences.
This event was part of Election 24: Ideas for change based on social science evidence, a Campaign for Social Science project which drew on a range of social science research to suggest evidence-based social policy directions in the run up to a UK general election in 2024.
