It’s disgusting that any luxury brand isn’t sustainable. When you’re charging thousands of dollars per item it should be guaranteed the product is sustainable. It just shows how greedy these company owners are. I literally have second hand embarrassment.

I think for some it’s about not being labeled “a hater” that is only criticizing because of jealousy of their success and for others they feel so identified it’s offensive when someone criticizes their faves 😅

verrryyy interesting info about m&s🧐 the buyer demographic of m&s clothing is much older than those of plt, boohoo and shein. i wonder if m&s get away with hiding their impact because the majority of their customers aren’t aware/educated on the ethics of clothing manufacturing. i may be wrong but i think m&s clothing features often on the ‘fashion’ segments of daytime tv programmes like this morning and morning live. i would guess their largest buyer age group is 50+ also!!! they sell A LOT of school uniforms!! would be soooo interesting to see the amount of waste that comes from school uniform manufacturing alone
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 3 месяца назад
yes!!! i think you're onto something here, also the fact so many ppl focus on gen z's fashion impact but Shein's average shopper is 35!! clearly we need to be informing everyone of their impact 🫠

oooh sorry just saw the last bit about school uniforms, this is actually so true?? cause like you can hand it down to others but i'm sure many don't, and you can't donate it so like... is it straight to landfill??

@@katierobinson i just found a report online (can’t access the whole thing because it’s $350 to read?!) which states that 50% of m&s customers are over 55 years of age. they have 100% been trying to target a younger demographic in the past few years though. i keep seeing their most recent ad on tv, which to me seems to appeal to millennials and the older end of gen z. it’s a pretty cute ad with a girl lip-syncing to girls just wanna have fun, but the thing that confuses me is that the text over the screen says ‘anything but ordinary’, while she is wearing simple jeans, a red vest top and a trench coat!! they’re literally the most simple, “ordinary” pieces. i now want to do a deep dive of m&s and their branding lol. you can find the ad on youtube if you search m&s spring/summer 2024 if you’re interested :)

Every time I see that kardashian nipple thing, I feel like grinding my teeth to dust. I was sure it was an SNL skit or something of a kind when I heard about it the first time. It is still a joke, but an exceptionally cruel one - one that is had by these one-percenters at our expense. Hopefully people will come to their senses and will finally stop coddling all these celebrity types.

@@BigFatSeal10 you've got a lot of confusion about sustainability. Some conspiratorial thinking as well. Would love to talk you through it but I understand that you are incapable of changing your mind. One thing we agree on - for the rich it's all about the money. PS. Good quality is one aspect of sustainability - if the item that is bought is immediately discarded, well, it's not very environmentally friendly, is it?

The celebrity promotions with fast fashion colabs is obviously a loophole for fast fashion to get into and continue to polute/exploit - I think the celebs have more responsibility to do the right/fair thing with their promotions - and as you said, its up to each of them to educate themselves on sustainability - not pass the buck and earn the fortune!

Might be a dumb question at this point but I'm still super unclear on which materials are the most and least ideal in terms of sustainability! I know reclaimed/recycled polyester is better than virgin poly but otherwise I feel like I've heard conflicting bits on materials

Buying anything second hand is better than buying even sustainable fibre directly from the brand. The best fabrics are natural fibres like wool, cotton, silk. Even with those sometimes the way brands obtain them isn’t sustainable. It seems like a straightforward question but it’s really quite complicated. The more you buy second hand the less demand there is for new products.

What do you think about Amazon Drop? They make clothes on demand and you can order it only in a short time period. Is this a good way for sustainability?
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 3 месяца назад
had no idea about this but just looked at it briefly... as far as i can tell this is not sustainable unfortunately. they have no info about the factories they're using, the "30 hour" drop timelimit encourages you to shop fast rather than consider the purchase, and amazon itself is well known for worker rights violations i think? i know they say it's "made on demand" but they're constantly putting out new collections, so the whole purpose of slow, made to order fashion is negated by the new drops. hope this helps!! 🫶

I'm genuinely curious so I hope my question doesn't come as snobby. but do you think all brands/companies these days need to be transparent about their sustainability? does this matter 20-50 years ago? why now, is it bcos of the fast fashion epidemic? I notice how you point out those brands that didn't disclose about sustainability, but does it really necessary? even like hm or zara does say about it, yet consumer like us still not satisfied. so what are we looking for here... sometimes I just wonder, all these brands are going to pollute the planet even more anyway. the main issue here is the garment quality and material. if we could sustain that, we can wear the item many times. or brand could offer repair service. but at the end of the day, everyone just want to capitalise every single thing if they can 🙃
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 3 месяца назад
don't worry about asking any questions, esp when you ask so politely 🫶 i do think all brands need to be transparent about their practices, and that it will matter in the future. I think if we allow any brand to get away with bad practices / not disclosing information, it will drag the whole industry back: brands have to invest in transparency, they have to pay for either software to show their supply chains or real people to track it, and if we have some brands paying and others not then it's not a fair economy and the brands that are trying to be sustainable may suffer economically. Also, without access to information, governments find it harder to put legislation into place bc they don't understand the full picture. If they can create accurate, meaningful legislation it means brands won't be polluting the planet, or will significantly reduce their pollution, which is a massive win. Unfortunately don't agree that the main issue is about garment quality - in my opinion, overproduction is the main issue and should be tackled first. obviously banning/ taxing polyester would help the environment, but would brands just find another, equally damaging fabric and continue to churn it out? i spoke a bit about this in my polyester/ fabrics of the future video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aMZz_ZESJrc.htmlsi=LpuYOqUGwEQJZwi6 hope this helps and answers your questions!! 🫶

100%. It’s a great question. Every company should be transparent about sustainability, where they source products from and how they’re assembling them.

As a knitter, the only way to do sustainable knitting is to knit your own clothes using organic, recycled and animal fibre products. Any knitwear (especially af) sold for less than £100 is machine made and pumping dirt into the environment.
@BigFatSeal10
@BigFatSeal10 3 месяца назад
I literally do not care about sustainability would rather them use all that money on the product instead of what amounts to political pandering that often makes products worse. If you want to stop pollution go talk to China or India, I’m not changing my lifestyle just so I can be on a moral highhorse. Its such a rich american thing to put so much stock in this but I guess fear sells, I would pay more for a product that pollutes a ton just to spite you all.

@@kristinakennedy8266 For example- Adidas Stan Smiths used to be leather, now they are “eco plastic” that creases and ages immediately cutting the lifespan of a pair down by years. This is just 1 example, there are countless more, like luxury clothing brands selling recylced fabrics. They are trying to make more profit and trick you into thinking you are getting a better product when in reality they are simply cutting costs. Enviromentalism is simply a product of capitalism, it is all about money, you guys might love the planet but the people at the top of this movement are literally rolling in the dough and don’t care if we live or die. The billionaires, ngo’s & politicians are all lying to us, making us buy more expensive, worse products with the excuse that the planet will explode if we don’t. So much manipulation
