from luxury brands like Chanel, Burberry, Louis Vuitton etc, to fast fashion giants Shein, Boohoo, Primark - companies are trying to get away with not paying for fashion's upgrades, whilst being the biggest profiters of the industry. they're passing the buck onto suppliers, consumers, governments - and it's a massive block to much-needed progress
lmk in the comments or on my community poll who you think should pay for sustainability!!!

I'm glad you're mentioning, how luxury and high end brands are often not much better than fast fashion brands. Not to let the latter off the hook - but it's certainly even more disgusting, when even brands with a huge mark-up per article won't do the bare minimum in terms of sustainability and paying workers fairly. And I feel they get way less flag for their unethical behavior, because it's so easy and convenient to focus on 'fast fashion' and especially brands like Shein. Which are conveniently not from Europe or America. Nobody cares, if they're slapped with higher taxes or fines, because we don't feel any affiliation with them. If Shein went bankrupt next week, nobody would shed a tear. If H&M went bankrupt, people would take notice.

fast fashion brands are certainly bad, but luxury fashion almost invented greenwashing 😅 the way they've convinced us they're "sustainable" when they often have the same supply chains/ labour issues is insane 💀

all the ones that have stocks in USD are the same, and then there's shein... the """unethical""" one on paper. because it's not US controlled and the money doesn't go into ""western"" (bought by america) businesses.

the thing that is so sad is the brands probably make more than 1 trillion per year but they turn their noses up at making changes that actually improve peoples lives - so glad theres at least a little bit of regulation now!!!

Hiking up prices makes sense, I hear a lot of consumers complain about them "eating the cost" when their money always went to the cost. The problem is that SheIn has poor quality clothing, and possibly toxic clothing. They probably don't need to raise their prices as high simply because they make so much money, but Shareholders, no matter where, are the reason we are all being forced to pay for shite quality items.

I never thought luxury brands are sustainable. where do people get this idea?? it really shows how the brand has brainwashed us into believing they're better than other. they don't even mention about sustainability. after learning about the dior sweat shop, it really disgust me looking at other luxury brands. I never justified the price at all, I don't understand how people can really purchase such amount of money. the brand really boost up your ego and denial

You don’t have to pay premium prices! Online you can find designer clothes cheaper! Or just pay attention to the material! I am not buying polyester anymore! Or any other synthetic materials! Social media plays a massive role as well! Lots of what people are consuming is because every 3 seconds there’s another trend that you have to buy! I don’t have any social media! Hopefully at some point it will die out! Plus just don’t buy something new all the time! If you overthink everything you are thinking about buying you will end up not buying it or just getting exactly what you need and really want!

it NEEDS to be the brands. they need to accept that their bottom line will be affected. this is a part of the larger global challenge to accept de-growth and the capitalists denial of such degrowth

Omg brands; it’s your mess that you’re profiting from this whole time, clean it tf up! They shouldn’t decide, they haven’t made any good decisions for anything other than profit, they should be obligated to change or quit. Quitting would be way better for the planet anyways. This makes me so angry. Pretty sure people will slowly stop buying shein if they’re prices are the same as better quality fast fashion. I hate going into clothes shops these days, just racks of cheap polyester tat that women have been exploited to make, for consumers to wear for a few days if that. It makes me feel ill knowing all this and seeing people mindlessly consume regardless.

i hate buying clothes new from any western brands. i swear i feel better buying a 5 dollar piece from shein because at least shein is honest and efficient... whenever i buy a new skirt for 30-40 bucks that is obviously made for less than 3 bucks total, it feels wayyy worse lmao. but neither feel good if you're looking for something authentic. gotta go thrifting or go even more expensive.

Luxury is now a huge joke. I'm so glad the truth is starting to come out. They are no better than the counterfeits, actually maybe worse in terms of the absurd prices charged in comparison.

Econ 101 the costs to the environment should be in-bedded into the cost of the item. I believe that there should be regulations that require it. Honestly, I think that there should be trade negotiations through WTO that are agreed to. This should also include safe practices for workers in the negotiations. It will always be a combination of who pays for the sustainability. For sure some of the prices will get pushed to the consumer and likely this would have the needed impact of slower fashion - hopefully the result would people would look for longer lasting pieces because clothes are costing more. Maybe with luxury items more of the costs would fall to the brand and massive profits would be reduced. Who pays depends on the market. It is actually what a price based system does well if we let it, but we have not forced to costs of the production to be part of the costs of the product but instead had underpaid workers, health issues and climate issues result because we haven’t been paying the true costs of fashion. Of course greedy capitalists don’t want to pay and will be willing to exploit, which is why the regulation is so important - most companies aren’t going to do it on their own. Consumers can also demand it and demand the evidence- this is harder because so many consumers are also willing to have the exploitation in exchange for cheap prices, so regulation will be more effective I would imagine. Companies in the US have such huge lobbying power and it will make it hard to get needed changes made. We need this as a planet though as soon as possible.

Idea what if what if we break it up and no one "player" does 100% costs could go up ( preferably no more than $5) but it can't be insane but also everyone else could take a small hit as well. If we distribute the burden onto everyone then it's less impactful and damaging to each group. Also a healthy profit margin is considered between 20- 23% even by business standards and lingo a profit margin bigger than that is labeled as greedy or as someone shelling out cheap crap for way too much. I really wish we could have a world where everyone works together for the best goal overall not the best for one group and only that group. Having a better world is going to rely on everyone being willing to compromise and things. Not every hill is worth dying on so can everyone stop wanting to die on stupid ass hills so we can find common ground and work towards real solutions that is better for the planet and our species alike. This crap is not black and white there is lots of grey areas in there that everyone needs to start observing to we can actually make progress.
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 18 дней назад
agreed! & i think the idea of sharing the cost would definitely work, we'd need complete transparency to make sure everyone is actually paying their fair share tho as i wouldn't completely trust brands 👀
