It's not hard for me to believe that Janet Dubois was Cab Calloway's daughter. She does favor him and his other daughters. I agree, too, that JJ was the humor on the show and JJ was smart, but in a different way than Thelma and Michael. He was street smart and he ended up getting the family out of the projects. Jimmie Walker blamed John Amos for the show's cancelation because the father was so important to the show and, suddenly, he was gone.
@evnstvn58
@evnstvn58 2 года назад
Jimmie Walker should have understood why John Amos left the show! He felt that JJs character was too full of STUPID BUFFOONERY and, he voiced his opinion and, he was given a choice...he chose to leave....he stood on principle...it wasn't about the money!
@TommyGibbs1
@TommyGibbs1 2 года назад
Actually it was the producers who fired John Amos over the phone and killed his character off so that there was no possible way for him to return. The producers didn’t want a Father on the show in the first place(and they wanted JJ to be a thief) but Esther Rolle was not going to do the show as a single Mother with a criminal for a Son making James Evans the first Black live in Father/Husband in tv history, so really it was the producers that hurt the show… and JJ did not get his family out of the projects with his ‘ebony genius’ it was actually Keiths football contract that moved them, which is another travesty
@evnstvn58

@@TommyGibbs1 Yeah...that too! James was too much real man for them! He's probably outlived most of them too!
@TommyGibbs1
@TommyGibbs1 2 года назад
@@evnstvn58 Exactly, they didn’t want the family to have a strong male role model in the home in the first place so when Jimmie Walker became the breakout star, they loved it… in fact when Norman Lear told John Amos he was being fired, he kind’ve joked about it but when Lear told Jean Stapleton (who left her show and didn’t seem to be very moved) how Edith Bunker was going to die, he actually cried smh no respect for the strong Black Father

I hated that they killed off James, I once read that they originally wanted him to walk out on the family, but killing him off would eliminate any chance of him coming back, which I'm glad he didn't walk out, as James would never have done that. With Esther coming back, she agreed to on the condition that she came back without her husband, as she felt Carl wasn't right for Florida. Is it me, or were there no reunion shows or movies for black shows from back in the day, I would have liked to had seen a tv movie about 10 years later to see how everyone made out. Keep up the good work, love your videos.

Amen on that. He reminds me of my grandpop. He helped raised me and my sister because my mom was a single parent so my grandparents helped raised us. I will always be grateful to pop for that. He passed in 1999. He was my step granddad but it didn't matter to us . He was there for my mom when she was growing up. And there for my sis and I when came in to this world. And like my pop pop did for me, James Amos left a positive mark on Good Times. So I agree James wouldn't have deserted his family.

I saw publicly about that reboot. I didn’t know that it was Netflix. My memory about the years escapes me. Seems mid 80s everyone wanted to see like a reunion show. Just to see how they were fairing living on Lake Shore Dr. If it had come together. Janet Jackson wasn’t going to participate.

But then the way they did his character, they bought Florida back for Thelma's wedding and she returned to the show and they didn't say anything about Carl at all after that.

She was also on an episode of Moesha playing an elderly neighbor that was a retired author with dementia that Mo had to do chores for after stealing oranges from her with Kim and Hakeem. She had a great career. Esther Rolle was a great actress too. I remember first seeing her on Good Times and later in a lot of made for tv films. Great video......1932 would likely be the correct year of birth for Janet Dubois because her son passed away in 1987 at the age of 36 so he would be like 70 years old if he were still living today . Also her death certificate confirms her year of birth as 1932 as well..... She was married at age 18 in 1950 and started having children right after so all her children are close in age. I know two of her children are still living , a daughter and a son ) both who did some small appearances in television/film back in the 1970`s. We definitely know she could not have been 74 years old at the time of her death when she has children close to that age. It has been said she lied about her age to keep getting work . She was certainly a lovely and talented actress along with the great Esther Rolle .

I really enjoyed both Good Times videos. Ester Rolle and John Amos were right about Jimmy Walker’s antics. He did seem minstrel-ish on the show after season 1. He could have been funny without going so far. In fact, I remember a race documentary in the 80s that compared his character to black minstrel performers. Pictures of the minstrel dancing were compared to JJ’s dancing and jumping around and sure enough, he had the same moves. I used to have a love/hate relationship with the show because his overall silliness cheapened an otherwise good series. However, I am glad that JJ was also shown as a talented, caring and protective male figure.

I agree with John Amos in regards to how the show was making a buffonery of Jjs character. I also feel like Jimmie Walker felt he was bigger than every cast member. They all shined every week, but the shows creator didn't want to take the focus away from Jj, not even a little bit, which caused tension amongst the cast. I also agree with James and the way he approached Jimmie Walker about Bernadette Stanis posing for playboy. If that is what she wanted to do, then she could have gone that route. Jimmie thinks he is doing her a favor, but it came off a little creepy to me. Esther was a true woman of her words, and she didn't let anyone push her around for the sake of a dollar. So, of course, she wanted to show that there were husbands and wives living together under one roof there children. Mabel King from Whats happening did the exact same thing she wanted more screen time, and she also wanted a love interest but the creators opposed and eventually fired her for wanting more, and why shouldn't she? She was the matriarch of the family raising two teenagers and there was definitely room for her character to grow but there is and was this stigma for black households to have a single parent raising children and it just wasn't so. Why shouldn't we be portrayed as a two family household and show the world some positivity in it versus what we were presented? I don't know. I feel Jimmie Walker was funny initially, but after a while, it wasn't even funny anymore to me. So, it's a shame the show saw fit to fire James because he stood up, and eventually Esther left because she didn't like what happened to James, but she did come back. I'm not saying the show wasn't great, but how they did that cast and Jimmie Walker was not all that he appears to be. I listen to him, and it's like he didn't care for anyone other than himself. That's my opinion.
