Funny, after 45 years of playing and tonal obsession you're comparing my three favorite Celestions. Can't go wrong with any of these. Old vintage 30s sound great too.

Damn......the G12-80 surprised me! Thought the 65's would be the winner for sure. Cool sounds man. Thanks for posting

I bought the G12-80s in er... 1981 or so... ;) I put them in a 'some say' Vintage 1974 Marshall 2045 - it was just an old cab my mate was off loading. I use them everyday, running a Rivera TBR-1m loaded with EL34s into it ;) Sound gorgeous even at 8 watt...

Really useful thanks. I'm a long time user of G12-65 but considering moving to G12-80, this has convinced me that this is worth doing. If only I could find some..

The G1280 has that crunch and and growl that I've been looking for in a 50 or 100 watt Marshall and expected to find it from G1265s or Greenbacks. Maybe this is the speaker I've been looking for? Why is this speaker so slept on? It sounds amazing.

the 65s are just awesome. But all of them sound great. If i could afford it, i would by a pair of each of them :D Rock on and thanks for this nice test :) Greetings Marco

classic leads or the old school ones? I just got some classic leads and heard the old ones not realizing what they were and loved them, wondering if the classic leads 80s are gonna be as good

Good comparison(and playing). I'd love to get your advice... My cab has four G12-80s but my friend just gave me four G12T-75s. I know neither is a vintage type speaker(which is the sound I'm after) but I'm trying to work with what I have. Do you know which of these speakers would do a better job of getting a vintage greenback type sound? Any thoughts you can share are very appreciated.

@222dwardo 5 лет назад
I don’t have much experience with 75’s but I would guess the 80’s are a bit closer to the sound you’re after. The 75’s are a great speaker too though. You’ll have to get another cab for the 75’s and compare them.

Heritage 55hz can get you to the vintage greenback tone...if you could spend more, go for scumback 75hz pvc...

@@OperationEndGame Thanks man, I'm sure that's great advice but I can't justify buying them right now. On the plus side however, I've been getting some great vintage tones lately. I traded two mod pedals for two MIAB pedals. Though different, they both sound grreat and give me a good natural breakup type tone at lower volume. Which is what I needed. I can get a very convincing Paul Kossoff/ All Right Now tone so evething's all right now. Cheers Bro!

g12 h all the way it's more open and has more bite and crunch I find the 80 was very similar . the g1265 is a great speaker but it's just a little bit too smooth for my taste on certain applications it would be great . the g12 65 is more acdc and the g12h30 in more led zeppelin sounding . those older g12h30 are alot smoother then the reissues . the newer ones are much more harsh . even when they are broken in well the newer ones are not as smooth . the older ones have just the right amount of bite the newer ones seem more mid scooped as well . they are still fantastic sounding speakers though .

Yeah, "Cold sweat" they all sound great in their own way. The 80 is the early NWOBHM sound!
@stratocastermaster9

iv mixed the 65 with a g12m 25 and I think it has all the frequencies filled in. Sounds sweat. The 65 brings the booming bottom end in the greenbacks lack. fav speaker here.

Is the GH30 the anniversary, Heritage H55 or Heritage H75? Also is the G12 80 the same as the Classic Lead 80? Thanks.
@222dwardo
@222dwardo 8 месяцев назад
The G12H30`s are originals from 1972, 55hz I think. I´m pretty sure the G1280 is a different speaker from the Classic lead.

Seems speakers are a HUGE part of the sound. I use a Laney with a cheap overdrive and an Ibanez RG at the moment. Speakers are the G12 65 Heritage and the sound i get is very close to your "heavy" sound with the original G12 65 in the video.

in an old school metal high gain context, what's the difference between the 65 and the 80? which one has the most aggressive sound withouth being too bright?
@222dwardo
@222dwardo 7 лет назад
trey azagathooth The 65's are a bit more aggressive but the 2204 is a pretty bright amp. I usually turn the treble almost all the way down otherwise it's way too bright. Then I add a boss ds1 to get those vintage metal tones.
@lovecraftmusic8717
@lovecraftmusic8717 7 лет назад
yes I know, I have a 2203 and I'm still looking for a good dark speaker to tame that brightness and I turn the treble to 2-3 and the presence max at 5-6. But do you use a ds1 distortion or do you typed wrong and meant the sd1 overdrive?
@222dwardo
@222dwardo 7 лет назад
trey azagathooth I use a ds1 but don't have an sd1. Maybe the sd1 is better for old school metal?

Do you know which cones are on the G12-80? Usually stamped in white on them.
@222dwardo
@222dwardo 8 лет назад
+odgeUK They're the 444 cones and the 65's have the 1777 cones. The 80's have less mids and a bit more bottom end but they are also in a 1982b cab. I bought the cab with the intention of putting some 65's in there to have a full stack (because need that at home ;), but like the 80's so much I'll probably leave them in there. Cheers!

The G12-80 sounded great. My preference: 1: G12-80 2: G12H-30 3: G12-65 Not a big fan of G12-65s tbh. Too much low mids and, to my ears, a unpleasant treble.
