A legend, one cool dude, Earl the Pearl, Black Jesus, the original Magic: whatever you call him, he was unique and one of the greatest. I remember him when he played for Winston Salem against Akron. And then he would come to Akron to visit Bullet teammate Gus Johnson, who was kind of a LeBron precursor. Mr. Monroe was an outstanding athlete and a good man.
Earl is a legend indeed one of my favorite Knicks no doubt and he loved his mother very touching i loved my mother the same way he did God bless him and Happy Birthday to the Pearl.
I watched Earl in my youth, he was a joy, but I have never heard the man speak, a great person. He made awkward looking plays magical. Those of you who watched him will know what I mean.
Earl Monroe was a bad, bad man. I'm a Sixers fan, but the Pearl is one of my favorite players of all time. Have a photo in my glove compartment of Monroe and a bunch of kids -- me included -- at a basketball camp. Damn, I would have loved to do the Monroe spin just once.
Incredible brother right there. I met Earl as a teenager and was extremely impressed by him and his intellect. He came to a community center in our area to speak to the youth and dropped this gem on us that I've never forgotten. He said that...(opportunity Knocks, but it has never been known to pick the lock)and it resonated with me almost instantaneously and I will never forget brother Earl for thst.
He was a great player enjoyed watching him as a kid growing up keep up the good work and in real life I know he's doing well. I lived in North Jersey and I watched the New York Knicks games a lot. And I was happy when they won the championship. And he also played a big role in helping them win.
Earl is my All time NBA player,South Philly Christain Street Y,Maryann Anderson Court & gym,Mr.Baker League,Baltimore Bullets Knicks, Winston Salem,John Bartram High School. Philly's Alltime,HOF,Baller. We Love Brother!
I remember when the word hit the streets that the NY Knicks had acquired Earl "The Pearl" Monroe. We could not believe our ears!!!! It was like "Oh my God!!! This awesome!!! The Knick defense plus The Pearl raining down jump shots on the Knick's opponents!!!! We all thought we will win the NBA championship!!!! Lol!!!!
I am old enough to remember what a great player Earl the Pearl was offensively. Absolutely fantastic spin move. I am also impressed with him as a man. Giving credit to his Mother
Me too!! ....West & Baylor since '65. But those Knick 'Teams' were magical! Every player starting with The Captain, the leader Willis, ...Clyde, DeBusschere, Dollar Bill, Fall Back Baby Dick Barnett, Lucas (forgotten Top 50 player!)....forever Legends. Greatest period to be a NYC sports fan!!
The REAL PEARL played for the Baltimore Bullets!!! New York got him because Clyde couldn't guard him & Clyde was tired of Pearl showing him up. At that time Walt "Clyde" Frazier was a defensive guru & Best defensive guard in the NBA. He had no ANSWERS FOR PEARL THO'!!!
Maravich was the greatest magician w/the ball, ever - this guy was the 2nd greatest - he was mesmerizing to watch! Earl & 'Pistol' were so far ahead of their time that we have yet to reach their time!
Could you tell those Steph Curry lovers? Pistol had moves that NOBODY has done yet.Imagine if you were able to showboat as freely in the 60's and 70's like they can now? Those guys had moves for days!!!
@@missayawk Yea "showboat " that's what they called it...you had to have a real players coach to do that....I remember jumping in the air throwing a between the legs pass...that was a big deal then...shut the game down....refs had to get fans off the court. After the game the coach asked me why did I do that??? He wasn't for no show boating.
How I wish the Pearl could have seen the joy and excitement on faces of all the kids in my neighborhood when we first heard that the Pearl was going to play for our Knicks!!!!
1965 I am one of 2500 people packed into Rucker park in NYC for the, end of the summer, round robin tournament between summer league all star teams from Boston, Philly, Washington DC, and NYC. Leading the Philly team was Earl Monroe, and when entered the court everyone, in unison started a low chant of J-E-E-S-U-S , J-E-E-S-U-S and Earl did not disappoint dropping 43 points, using 360 degree spins from baseline to baseline. Philly needed every point because "Crazy" Joe Hamond, dropped 39. I think also on the NYC team was Herman "The Elevator Man" Knowles, and Jackie Jackson all Harlem playground legends. Games like that is what NYC BASKETBALL was all about.
I was a Baltimore Bullets fan and was genuinely upset when Earl went to the New York. I remained a Bullets fan, but I continued to cheer The Pearl, even wearing a Knicks uniform.
The Pearl is the only player they liked and cheered for even when he was on the Bullets and shooting the lights out on the Knicks!!!! He would beat us with style and without a lot trash talking!!! He was loved by even the most devout Knick fans when he was still playing with Baltimore!!!!
Earl "The Pearl" Monroe the Greatest Guard in NBA HISTORY!!! If he is second to anyone in the NBA, It is Oscar "The Big O" Robertson!!! I will match Earl with ANY GUARD IN ANY ERA!!! If you NEVER saw him play DON'T SAY SHYT!!!
I’m so sick of people saying Pete Maravich was the “innovator” of the flashy passes & showmanship in the NBA when this guy right here, The Pearl, played years before him. Hell, even Connie Hawkins played in the NBA before Maravich so knock it off with that “innovator” & “originator” _claim_ about Pete already. 🙄
