and a question for you. A lot of treatments you tested here are not designed to work without being oiled - they are designed to capture oil for rust protection. Were they oiled for the test?

You can’t take this video seriously. This video is made by cerakote. They did the same test with nitron vs cerakote. Where nitron would win every time but it still somehow lost. Because of the nastiest nitron finish job I’ve ever seen. But what I’m saying is cerakotes videos are set up so they come out on top every time.

What about titanium nitride?
@gesalbte
@gesalbte Год назад
Titanium nitride (TiN) coating is not intended to provide corrosion resistance to the metal. Oxygen can somehow penetrate it and cause corrosion beneath. You can do a quick picture search to see what it's like when TiN coated parts corrode. I've heard that chromium nitride (CrN) or diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating, which use the similar PVD process, do better in protecting the metal beneath for corrosion.

@@jbone9900 it is a steel hardening treatment that under high temperature where nitrogen is infused into the surface. It makes steel less corrosion resistant and very hard. Check it out - it is some cool stuff

Cerskote gets dinged and chipped by ejecting brass alone. I have cerakoted firearms from the factory, all chip and ding from ejecting brass alone, so it's not a strong, durable finish. PVD is much more durable, and nitron or phosphate are the best-looking finishes imo. I love silky smooth satin gray military looking finishes on quality firearms. Cerakote does prevent corrosion well, though, but many others do as well. Sigs nitron and glocks old tennifer finish on gen 3 and previous are the toughest imo.

How about a normal water test since most guns aren’t subject to salt to get a more real world result. Also oil what’s intended be oiled.

Funny how Cerakote is never tested against Black T.

blade4flame ya I was wondering where is black t here.... they don’t test against them because they would loose horribly

Black t atsm saltwater test was 500-1500 hours. By their own account on their own website.

And if you wanted to support a company that won't sell their entire line of products to law abiding veterans or regular US citizens it may be a good choice. Too bad they don't trust us to buy all their products, so I don't give them by money. (Gen2 Cerokte)

Cerakote is a barbeque paint job. If you like cheap looks go with Cerakote. PVD is a much more technical and smooth finish. It is a thin vapor deposit that takes on the characteristics of the pretreated surface. If you polish the surface PVD will be polished. If you bead blast/satin finish the surface, the PVD treatment will be satin. There is a reason the highest end gun custom makers use PVD. The negatives are if you don't pretreat the surface well.... if the custom maker is starting to lose patience with pre treatment... you will get a poor PVD result... inconsistent appearance... also, it takes on fingerprints readily, which I actually like. It is a wonderful, thin, durable, attractive finish... not like a spray paint, cooked on finish.

True... But can you do pvd at home?
@gesalbte
@gesalbte Год назад
PVD like TiN corrodes just as badly as a regular paint job when it's in contact with salt and water. One way to make it less likely to corrode is to increase the TiN coating thickness, but that increases the cost significantly as well. Another way is to use the more corrosion-resistant PVDs, like chromium nitride (CrN) or diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating.

Nobody outside the US relies on ASTM anymore. In the civilised world people rely on DIN.

Cerakote cannot be applied to inside of channels - anywhere you cannot spray. So when we speak of corrosion resistance, we need to understand that only the surface is protected. If you let the aggressive environment soak into unprotected places you'll get quick corrosion. Treatments that are applied by submerging or exposing to vapors do not have this limitation.

you are right. what mostly used is black anodizing, Chromoly, and Salt Nitrate as I remember but what is the best, that is what I don't know.
