Not gonna lie, I love Jesse and Lucie. Honestly one of my favorite pairing of the book. I really did have to question why i was shipping someone with a ghost, and then I was like "It's Cassie. She can get me to ship anything."
The reason Tatiana Blackthorn always wears the same dress is because she is based off Miss Havisham from Great Expectations who, after her fiancé died, wore her wedding dress for the rest of her life.
I know this was two years ago but I just read this and I also noticed that. Plus the house being a wreck and the clocks stopping at the same time also are based off Great Expectations.
@@jacklemm1518 it would be gross, but with the time period they're in and the fact they're in high society, and that the shadowhunter lines are small and everyone is technically related to each other in some way, something like that happened a lot probably. Agreed that it is gross though
it's such a fun time when you've read every single shadowhunter book (including companion series/novels) and you can just let yourself go and consume another piece of this universe without the worries of getting spoiled, love that for me
I love getting lost in this world. I wish I was actually there sometimes, wish there was some way to actually jump into these books because I love them so much
The reason why no one is telling James about what Grace is saying or doing is because whatever spell or magic Grace is using is making it so they don’t think about anything bad she’s doing. Like when she kissed Matthew, Matthew wanted to say that she made him do it, but he wasn’t able to. Then he thought to himself how ludicrous it would be to accuse her of something that he had voluntarily done. So whatever magic Grace is using is making it so Matthew believes he wanted to kiss her. Her magic seems to push the kiss to the back of his mind though, because after that he never seemed to think about it again since he didn’t seem to be more troubled than usual around James, and was only warning him about Grace because he disliked her previously and believes that she did break James’s heart.
Allison Graves I thought it was so weird that Matthew never thought of the kiss again/ the kiss was never brought up after the first time. It felt like such a useless point but it will probably come back in the next book
Like, james is james😛 and Matthew is sirius(duh) , Thomas is obviously remus and Christopher...well, he's not Peter...Peter sucks and I love Christopher
I think the spell that Ty Blackthorn wanted to use in The Dark Artifices to bring back Livvy is the spell that will be used to bring back Jesse Blackthorn.
SPOILERS: Read a theory that suggests Lucy’s power is necromancy... so it may be possible she could bring Jesse back to life without the dark magic? Also Grace Blackbitch better have good redemption arc otherwise I’m gonna be so mad! As for her powers, Cassie wrote on her tumblr that they work on everyone expect James, hence the bracelet, and they also work in a way that makes the people who they are used on think, they came up with the ideas. So for instance, Matthew though he came up with the idea to kiss Grace. Oh and Asmodeus is Magnus’ dad Also love your dress! It’s gorgeous!
*SPOILER* Even though I know James is under a spell of some sorts I hated the way he made Cordelia feel throughout the book. One phrase that stayed with me throughout the book was when Cordelia’s brother told her that Matthew will never love her more than a drink and that James will always love Grace more. This breaker my heart while reading the book and I found it to be a ver true depiction of what it was like to read her feelings ❤️
Cassie clarified the thing with the bracelet and Grace's powers on her tumblr! Go check her answers to the spoilery questions! But basically Grace's power is not only to compel people to do stuff/like her but also to not be aware of said power. According to Cassie Matthew doesn't think Grace forced him to kiss her, he thinks he did it himself, hence him thinking so badly of himself in that scene. The same thing goes for the bracelet, Grace actually needs the bracelet to control James, her powers alone aren't enough (she mentions this like twice in the book) because of James' demon blood; so yeah to control James specifically she needs to channel her power through the bracelet and like with Matthew the power makes it so that James isn't really aware of the bracelet. Cassie compares it to the 'one true ring' in LOTR, that while the ring wants to go back to its master this bracelet wants to not be noticed, so basically James and others are compelled to ignore the presence of the bracelet. Tatiana wearing the same clothes all the time is a connection to Great Expectations! Miss Havisham wears her wedding dress all the time because she’s so traumatized by her husband leaving, just like Tatiana’s traumatized by her husband’s death
This is one of the few times I was particularly impressed by the main character in The Shadowhunter chronicles. I used to hate Clary. Tessa and Emma were great but they didn't leave the same impression on me that Cordelia did....
Thank you, I needed this! I have been SO mad throughout the book about Grace and James. But Alastair had a really strong character development towards the end, which really surprised me (& made me happy). I just love the whole set of characters in this book (except Grace and Tatiana obviously).
I just finished reading today and I too am SO mad 😭 he loved Cordelia when she took care of him when he has the fever !! but then after that he got Grace's bracelet and was under her spell for years 😩 I'm so upset that he's being tricked into thinking he doesn't love Cordelia- someone tell him to take that bloody bracelet off !!! 😭

I think that Grace asked James to leave Shadowhunterdom because she knew that he would say no, and give her the bracelet back. In the epilogue, Belial gets mad that Tatiana didn’t “prepare” James for there meeting. He says that James wasn’t even wearing the bracelet, and Tatiana replys by saying it’s not possible because she just recently saw him with the bracelet on, because Grace forced it on him again. I also think that the bracelet is the curse that would have weakened James to the will of Belial, but no matter how much I FRICKIN HATE Grace, she definitely saved James by forcing him to remove her bracelet.
Actually this is my favourite book from Cassie Clare apart from TiD . I think this book is so complex and truly shows the amazing writer that she is. I truly enjoyed this book so much and the nostalgia was on maximum level. First time Will was in a scene a burst in tears and seeing Will and Tessa together really warmed my heart.
Honestly this is my favorite first book in the shadowhunter world, and it seems like the last hours will be at the God tier with the internal devices, or maybe even above it
cordelia is actually 17 turning 18 in chain of gold. she’s born in the same year as thomas making her older than matthew and james by a year. the only 16 year olds are grace, lucie and christopher
That's only according to the family tree. In one of the Days Past flashbacks, Cordelia is 13 in 1900, so she was actually probably born in 1886 and is the same age as James and Matthew. The family tree is a year off, and it can't be trusted very much. Elias is alive, Sona is ten years younger than she should be and her name is even wrong - with the Carstairs there's so much inaccuracy.
The end made me want to die, why did Cassie do this to us????? I love how focused you are on The fact that Tatiana always wears the same clothes. The marry me scene grossed me out, ultimatums are never a apart of a healthy relationship
Cassie said on tumblr that the bracelet has more "abilities" that those we know, it doesn't only control the people where it's put on, it also makes all the others turn a blind eye to it... like they maybe can feel there's something wrong (like cordelia and matthew did) but they just can't relate it to the bracelet.

I loved this book! I espcially loved all the great expectations parallels Tatiana is so like Miss Havisham, when it comes to the condition of the house and Grace.
I keep associating Cordelia, James and Grace with the song Heather by Conan Gray. Like when the song goes "But I watch your eyes, as she Walks by" I think of when James left Layla for grace on the dance floor I really want someone to edit this 😭😭😭
MEEEE TOOOOO! i felt that, this was almost one of my favorite first in the shadowhunters books, BUT then the end came and i literally paused my audiobook started pacing around my room in anger

Matthew and Cordelia are end game! Calling it now. 1) Dancing together in the beginning and end of the book which James notices both times. 2) Issues with Cordelias dad will either make Cordelia hold Matthew to a higher standard or it will be something they bond over. 3) Their relationship is blooming, slowly but surely.
1st of all, when I read Ghosts of the Shadow Market and saw Belial in Learning About Loss, I knew he was Tessa's father, Cassandra would never put him in this tale right after the first two following Jem in his task to find Tessa's father in 1901. They knew each other, they recognized each other, and Belial was in debt with Jem, so was pretty obviosly to me that it was him. And, about Asmodeous, he is Magnus father, we see him in City of Heavenly Fire and The Red Scrolls of Magic. Now, about the family tree, Cassandra said on her tumblr that is propositally wrong, so we wouldn't have any TLH spoilers (even we knowing that James and Cordelia & Lucie and Jesse will end up together).

So fun fact: the Tatiana and Grace plotline is almost a direct parallel to Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, in which an older lady has something terrible happen to her and becomes a total recluse, obsessed with the event that upended her life. Just like Tatiana, she changes all of the clocks in her house to the exact time this event occurred, she lets the house fall to ruin, and she remains in the dress she wore during the event. And most importantly, this character in Great Expectations adopts a daughter that she raises as her own weapon with the intention of getting revenge on her enemy (in this case the entire male sex lol)
The moment I finished this book, I was like : There's gonna be a love triangle. Charles is gonna be with only two possible people: Thomas or Alastair. But I don’t think it's Thomas. Since grace and Christopher is gonna be together, there is going to be a twist, in which Charles is gonna have to divorce or quit the engagement, for someone, or some reason, to grace is gonna do it for James, I don’t know. Lucie and Jesse is gonna be together, so Lucie probably went to a warlock, or Tatiana even to bring him back. And Anna is going to be with Ariadne, I can feel it.
Maybe Grace wanted James to refuse her marriage proposal so she can accuse him of not loving her to break ties with him or so she can always use it against him by saying stuff like, "Oh! But you don't love me anymore! Prove that you love me by doing ________"
I would recommend that you not only read the infernal devices first, but you also pick up Ghosts of the Shadow market before reading Chain of Gold, specifically the stories that involve the characters in The Last Hours which includes Cast Long Shadows (centers around Matthew Fairchild) and Every Exquisite Thing (centers around Anna Lightwood). Some things that happen in Chain of Gold will be made more clear, but it's optional. Of course the other stories are worth a read too; Jem is in most of them!
Ok so I can explain the dress and stuff. I think Cassie is alluding to Great Expectations the dickens novel. In that there is a bitter old woman named Ms. Havisham who is always using and manipulating everyone because she is is mad at the world. She also raises an adopted daughter who she essentially turns into a cold hearted woman (Estella) she wears the same old wedding dress every day and lives in her old beat up house. It honestly a very clever allusion if you have read Great Expectations. You understand Tatiana immediately.
