We have seen many holiday collections come out from our favourite luxury brands like Chanel, Dior, Guerlain, Givenchy etc…This got me thinking: have holiday collections always looked the same? I'm born 1988 (like you as far as I know) and remember almost every collection you show. I have always been obsessed with colours and makeup. The collections felt so unreachable to me because of the price tags so I admired them in magazins and some of the things in stores as they weren't all accessible where I grew up. I wouldn't have guessed that as an adult I have quite an impressive collection of luxury makeup. I definitely share the passion with you!!!

In December of 1995 when I was still in HS and started my first part-job, I spent my whole first paycheck, which was all of $50, on a lipstick palette from the Chanel Holiday collection. It featured 4 mauve/ burgundy vampy shades, including my favorite shade of all time - Very Vamp. Very Vamp was the only color I really used from the palette and used up the whole pan. Now I really wish that I had kept that palette just as a keepsake. I even tried to find photos of it online the other day and had no success.

Hi Ally, I worked at the Chanel counter at Macy's 82-86 when I was in college. Back then it was all about No.5 at the holidays. We used to make our own gift baskets all wrapped up in cellophane with a big bow. Always with a bottle of No.5 as the centerpiece and usually the bath and body products. Sometimes a lipstick too.. we also made custom baskets for our customers. I had the same men year after year come in and buy one bottle of No.5 for their wives/girlfriends. My favorite holiday collection was in the 2010's maybe it was 2012, called the Vamp Collection, it was gorgeous! Thanks for the great memories!

What a great video! I love their makeup and skin care. I have used Chanel skincare and makeup (and fashion) since the early 1980's. I do not remember any makeup holiday collections during the 80's or 90's. In fact, this was true of most makeup lines. I do remember Chanel gift with purchase makeup up bags around the holidays but it might have been in the late 90's and early 2000's. The makeup shades and products were pretty consistent in the 80's and 90's, and they offered a smaller selection of products (maybe three to four foundation types, only their powder blushes in about 8 -10 shades for many years, etc), I do remember they had rich foundation in a jar (for dry skin) my mother used for many many years (the precursor to Sublimage) and two others in a bottle (one for oily skin and one for normal). They had the occasional discontinued shade or reformulated product. Not until the 2000's do I remember them coming out with limited edition makeup, such as the tweed blushes which came out possibly around 2007-2010 (ish). I would say in the last 5-6 years I noticed the explosion of seasonal makeup collections and an unending parade of new product launches.

What a captivating video, and what a research!.. I adore vintage makeup collections and history. I started collecting limited edition palettes from Chanel (eyeshadow mostly, but also highlighters, such as Lucky Stripes that was devoted to Las Vegas, I later discovered) I believe since 2005 or so… I still have most of them, just as collectable pieces, but I used many palettes, they were great. The 5 pans:)) the neutral earthy-tones one I believe was out when Lisa Eldridge was involved in Chanel beauty… Theres is also a Christmas eyeshadow palette from Givenchy I still keep, it comes in a black satin box, and the top doesn’t flip but opens like a box cover, more like a jewelry box - it’s very classy and vintage (I believe it was either 2008 or 2009 holiday edition) and the box is placed in a satin pouch. And the hunt for all these items… nothing sold online back then:)) oh still makes me feel butterflies in my stomach:)) Yes please more videos like this 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Back in early 2000 where I live, the places to go to for lux make up and skin care were Lancôme and Estee Lauder. Their makeup was of very high quality and their holiday collections were good too. They always had new eyeshadow and lipsticks for holidays. However I have moved on and for the past 10 years have not purchased a single item from them.

The very first high-end eyeshadow I bought was a Dior single shadow in a violet/purple that had a navy blue and gold motif for the compact. I used it wet/dry because I couldn’t find ANY purple eyeliner. I don’t remember the name of the color. I hit pan since I had used it two ways, and it’s long gone. I have an HG palette of 5 colors that I no longer use. It is also in a blue and gold compact but the center is oval not diamond shaped like the new palettes. It is called incognito 030. I see new recreations of my original online but they all look lighter and the center has the diamond shape we have now. I can’t for the life of me remember when I purchased this. It must be around 1986? It’s a beautiful compact that has rounded edges which reinforces the oval shape of the compact. Beautiful! Love this video. ❤. Thank you so much.

One of my favorites! I had that Chanel polish(the light purple opalescent) and I think there was a matching lip gloss which I also owned! The gray item you mentioned from Chanel was a liquid eye shadow that you shook to combine the two properties. I remember the Dior holiday with the black clutch. The following spring they did that same style and it was one of my all time favorite pallets. Underneath that CD door were a lipstick and maybe a lip plumper? I only remember perfume gift sets -- like a cream with a perfume. The department stores were full of them. I'm in my 60's and my mother really liked Estee Lauder perfumes -- which in the 1970's were only available at B Altman on 5th Avenue in NY (to my memory). It was a big event for me to go there and buy something for her.

Yes that sounds very accurate. Estée Lauder really had a chokehold on ladies in the 60s and 70s. She helped introduce the idea that women could purchase their own fragrances for themselves, instead of waiting for a husband or boyfriend to one for them.

I recall having a few of the holiday collection pieces from early-mid 2000s. Dior, Chanel, Guerlain and Givenchy were leading the pack. The Dior ""wallet" with brushes was fire! I still have the brushes, very good quality and still look decent. Modern Japanese or made in Japan brushes would surpass them now, but everything has its time and place. I still use blush and powder Dior brushes. There is also a bigger vanity bag that is a part of this collection I still have - leather and suede, love it! Tweed Chanel collections were a dream! The blush formula is amazing. Thank you for this make up time capsule!

I started wearing Chanel in the holiday season of 1984, my freshman year of college. My family went to London for winter break and I saw the Chanel counter in Harrods just fell in love. Lucky for me my mom was just as smitten and didn’t question the prices. I don’t remember a holiday make up collection per se but I remember the perfume holiday display because my mom bought some No. 5 to bring home for my grandmother. Fast forward a million years to me finding beauty you tubers and discovering holiday collections. I think they just weren’t on my radar until like 2014 because up until then I only went to a Chanel counter when I ran out of something. Anyway, I love the old ads and this video! ❤❤

Hi Allison, I love your beauty history videos and what a great idea focusing on yesteryear holiday collections. I think you are right on about the big make up houses not doing collections like they do now with special packaging and themed senarios. My father always bought my mum Chanel N 5 perfume for Christmas and it was just wrapped normally with celofane possibly a ribbon. And I can’t believe getting perfume at a couple dollars even if it was in francs or pound. Fascinating and thank you again for all the hard work in research that you do..

😱😱😱😱 I bought both of those multi palettes from Chanel. I was ecstatic ❤ ❤ I believe they were $105 each. I think this is what peeked my interest for holiday releases. I bought multi palettes in those following years - mostly from Dior. I bought 2 of the next multi palette Chanel came up with - both same color story 🫣

I don’t remember there being holiday collections but they did have limited edition collections a couple times a year. I also remember my father buying my mother Chanel 5 perfume for Christmas. Thanks Charli! I’m really curious if there were holiday collections in the 70s and 80s and there simply isn’t photographic evidence. Makeup blogs as we know them today only date from the early 2000s so there must be a treasure trove of photos out there somewhere.

I love the Dior evening gold collection. Especially the palette with the dark shade in the middle and the pink,gold beige colours around it. That is what the last Dior LE golden bouquet palette should have been.

So the first holiday collection (makeup) from Chanel that I remember was September 2004. I wanted something for everyday, and went to my local Saks. They had just gotten in the holiday pallet, which was very “frosty” looking. I believe it was mint green, a pink, black and either a white or silver. I kept telling the associate that I am interested in an everyday/work look. She kept telling me that I could certainly use it for everyday?? I am not sure why she didn’t try to sell me something different? But I had to stray from Chanel for the season. Meanwhile, the 2022 holiday pallet from Chanel, I have been really enjoying for everyday!! Despite the bad reviews from other influencers, it is an easy everyday look for me!!
