There has long been talk of a dramatic transformation of the upper part of Wenceslas Square. What is in store for this iconic Prague square and how come a cable car will lead through it?
We will tell you in this episode of the Live Prague series.
Cars, yes, but...
Unlike the lower part of Wenceslas Square, where cars are no longer allowed, the upper part will still be open to cars and parking. However, to a limited extent - the road will be narrowed to make way for pavements. These will now be up to 20 metres long. In addition, a wide promenade will be created in the middle of the square. All this will be complemented by tree planting and a cycle path.
Fewer exits from the metro
The metro exits behind the statue of St Wenceslas will be cancelled under the new plans. The same fate awaits the exits on the Jindřišská and Vodičkova levels - they will be replaced by a common, wide exit. And the one at the top by McDonald's will be moved and an escalator will be installed.
Refreshments and seating
The wooden benches that are now used for resting in the square will be replaced by marble benches. In addition, 4 drinking fountains will be added on the level of the Phoenix Palace and Luxor, from which you will be able to refresh yourself.
Mysterious number plates
Have you noticed the granite slabs with Roman numerals at the bottom of the square? Then know that you will see them in the upper part as well. They are a reference to the original plans for the construction of the New Town, for which the so-called "earth rope" was used as a unit of measurement. It is 25.6 metres, and that is what the plates measure. As an interesting detail, they will line the entire Wenceslas Square.
What about the highway?
Although the main thoroughfare is still an important artery in Prague, it will certainly not add to the tranquillity and beauty of Wenceslas Square. And so changes await here as well. The branch from Wilson Street to Washington Street will be cancelled, and the main street will be moved to the northwest to accommodate the future tram line connecting Václavak and the Main Railway Station.
A cable car at Wenceslas Square?
And speaking of trams - they were supposed to connect the square and Vinohrady, but that is still music of the distant future. In fact, for the time being, the tracks will only lead to the statue of St. Wenceslas. The connection to Vinohrady is "in the works" and is planned for 2031 at the earliest. So for the time being, the tram will only go to the statue and back down. In reality, it will be more of a cable car.
