An attraction that offers unique views of Prague, but also part of public transport, which carries 2 million passengers a year. This is the car cable to Petřín, which has an interesting history and, apparently, a promising future. And it's the one we're focusing on in this episode of the Live Prague series.
The water carriages
The first cable car to Petřín went up in 1891, and it operated by filling the upper car with water, thanks to which the lower car was pulled up. However, this original method was ended by the water shortage in Prague and in 1931 the 510-metre-long railway was electrified. In the 1960s, operation of the cable car was halted due to the waterlogged surface under the tracks, and during a 20-year brake the line was concreted over. In 1985, the cable car started up as we know it today - with two typical green cars.
Winking carriages
However, these green carriages will not be in use on Petřín for long. Already in 2025, new ones, designed by the well-known designer Anna Marešová, should start running. She was inspired by the current design of the cable car, but she planned much larger glass surfaces and folding seats for the cars - so that passengers could enjoy the view of Prague even better. What's more, the moment the carriages pass each other, they will wink and change colour. According to the author, this is a metaphor for couples in love, for whom Petřín is an iconic place.
What do you think about the planned transformation of the cable car at Petřín? Do you like the new look or would you not change it? Let us know in the comments.
