Replacing a front coil spring on a 2001 Peugeot 406 3.0 V6 Estate.
This process should be near enough the same on all variants of the 406, and in general most front wheel drive cars with McPherson struts are the same.
The coil spring had broken towards the top and this would have been reason for an MOT failure.
With the hub removed from the car the lower balljoint was also replaced, it was not in terrible condition but it was the opportune moment to show on video how to replace one of these lower ball joints.
Other than that the car recieved new disks and pads all round.
This is a relativley easy job to do, except for the part where the spring needs to be compressed. For that i would recommend taking the sturt assembly and new spring to a mechanic with a spring compressor and paying whatever small amount it may cost to have the spring replaced with a new one.

I think they are brilliant cars. Very reliable and if any age related issues arise a simple car to work on, parts are cheap and readily available.

What does XD mean? As for what can go wrong... a lot, i speak from the experience of having a 406 spring break, it was an unexpected bill at the time. The lower spring perch is not wide enough to hold the spring up if it breaks, the spring if broken will pass on down below the perch pushed down by the weight of the car. The sharp edge of the spring can damage brake hoses, CV boots even the tyre. I would advise changing any 406 springs in pairs especially if they look a bit rusty. It is much cheaper to proactively fix just the springs as preventative maintenance than deal with the consequences of broken springs.

How to get torque wrench details for suspential system in Peugeot 406

Hi there A haynes manual is a great resource, or if you want get a service manual from ebay they tend to be an offline copy of servicebox so have the manufacturers official documents. Just note PSA used da Nm which is the torque value but you need to multiply it by 10 So 3.5 da Nm is 35 Nm

9:50 Those plastic caps are there to keep the top of the struts clean.

Dirty upper struts was never really a problem noticed on any 406s without the covers, however they look tidy.

What brand tools you use and recommend ?

It depends on the application. For sockets i have Teng Tools 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive stuff, and some of the specailty sockets or bigger impact ones are sealey. The impact wrench used is a Milwaukee 18V 1/2" unit. Im not sure where you are from but in the UK and Ireland the shop Lidl has tools on specail offer from time to time, they are not professional grade tools but at the same time not cheap rubbish i have a few of their parkside and powerfix branded tools in the boot of the car for emergency uses

@@peugeotCitroen2CV do teng tools hold with impact wrench? I mean the torx, hex, special sockets? I do have parkside tools and lidl screwdrivers and other things they hold up good.

@@cristianojoana1898 When using impact wrenches you are supposed to use specific impact sockets. These are typically black, somewhat thicker than the normal sockets, and tend to be tougher than regular sockets so they do not shatter when used on an impact wrench. I have put regular sockets through the impact wrench, it is not adviced but when rushed for time the teng sockets can do it, just be sure to wear eye goggles, and if it does break there is no point asking about the warranty. The bigger torx/hex sockets have worked in the impact wrench with no issues although some common sense will say dont put a torx tx15 bit in a 1/2" impact wrench.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV Thanks for the info .. im asking because im looking at tengtools they look good quality and affordable i tried one Bergen tools but is rubbish...

Joana Cristiano I have one set of bergen ratcheting spanners i bought in 2012 which have been used quite a lot, although Bergen stuff does seem to be at the lower end of the quality scale, that and they do not seem to have any official company website, anyone trying to claim Bergen tools are German is talking manure. Halfords advanced tools are also good as they have a lifetime warranty.

Bonjour, quelle est la puissance de votre clé à choc ?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 3 года назад
J'espère que ça t'as aidé
