Changing Locomotive Trucks on an EMD SD 40-2

No one ever gets to see this! Walk underneath a locomotive and see what it looks
like with the trucks removed. They have this locomotive jacked up in the air to
replace the trucks on it. I'll show you the new rebuilt locomotive truck that is going
to go back under and how they unload it with a 115 ton crane from a tractor trailer.
The jacks are capable of lifting 50 tons per jack. This locomotive weighs 368,000 pounds
so it's no problem for all 4 jacks working in conjunction with each other to lift this locomotive.
Each of the trucks on the locomotive weighs right around 30 tons per truck!
Our locomotive trucks are rebuilt by Lyons Industries, Ebensburg Pa. which is about an
hour an a half from our harbor facility. The trucks are changed out by Lyons also.
We change our trucks on the locos on a prescribed basis as a general rule. However
if only a traction motor goes bad, then Lyons will come in and just change out a
combo. A combo is a traction motor with an axle out each side along with the wheels
on it already. We here do not have the capability or knowledge to rebuild loco trucks
or traction motors.
This is part 1 of a 2 part mini series on changing locomotive trucks. Here is the link to
see Part 2, putting the new trucks under the locomotive:

Theses particular trucks are known as "Flexicoil" trucks, they're identifiable by the 2 holes in the truck frame between each axle. When the SD40-2 came out these were replaced by the "HT-C" trucks with 3 holes that gave better tractive effort. Because 3098 was originally built as an SD40 it has the older Flexicoil trucks. After numerous derailments in the Amtrak SDP40F fleet, many experts blamed it on the HT-C trucks, prompting some railroads to specify Flexicoil trucks on their new-build 6-axle EMD Dash 2 locomotives.

Thank you very much Jackson for sharing that valuable information with us. You are also correct, this loco was built for SP in 1966 as an SD40. Road number 8477. After the UP/SP merger it was retired and sold to Boise Locomotive Works who did the dash 2 upgrade, but the frame remains as original SD40. And as you may have guessed 3098 has far more problems with wheel slip than our SD 38-2 locos do that have the HT-C trucks. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and write in my friend. May you have a most blessed day.

Big time maintenance here :) I have seen them move trucks at the engine assembly plants, but this is in the field and requires a different set of tools. One of the key things I remember from my days in power plant construction is the riggers and rigging. The cables, chains, and shackles are likely calibrated/certified and the guys are certified riggers. Add in the operator of the crane and his knowledge and you have a safe and efficient lift :) All in all, very cool to watch. Also - you are a brave man to walk under that 400,000 lb. locomotive :)

You are correct Brian, all those crane guys are certified, very important safety thing. I highly doubt if the crane company would even send out guys who weren't certified. If something went wrong the company would be liable for all damages if using non certified personnel. Now thats getting into the "nitty-gritty"!, and yes!, i have walked under a diesel locomotive as part of a Cub Scout trip to visit a railroad shop that had an overhead crane. The shop foreman let us all walk under a GP-38-2 that was over an inspection pit, and the boys actually got to operate another GP-38-2 as well, under his direction of course! The pit trip and running the Geep were extras, and the boys in the group certainly earned their railroad badge!

That is a big crane. You think about all of the things that go into heavy lifts and you don't have much room for error. I am amazed with those lift chains the trucks are hanging off of and the 50 ton jacks lifting the engine and still would never walk under a load or near it. Failures happen and it is never good when they occur. The riggers and experts that make sure everything is in top notch working condition have a big responsibility. Interesting process.

@@ccrx6700 Ours are shipped dry, except for the cog lube in the gear cases. It’s almost like tar until it gets warmed up, so we don’t have to worry about an accidental spill of that during shipping. But we mostly get just the traction motors. We have been changing a few trucks lately because we’re doing some frame mods on some of the older GE C-44 AC locomotives in the fleet. The frames are beginning to crack on some of them at the points where the fuel tank welds onto the frame. We have a 250 ton overhead crane that will lift the entire locomotive 40 feet in the air. We do both trucks at once on one of the less used tracks in our shop. We have a drop table for changing traction motors one at a time.

We just take the upper gear case cap off and shove the whole bag of lube through the opening. No it certainly doesn't Mike, not on the RR. This truck change out was long overdue and much needed, the wheels were getting pretty darn worn. We change out trucks on the locos on a regular scheduled basis, or at least try to. That didn't always happen when our last company filed bankruptcy. A lot of preventative maintenance went by the way side. But things are much better now and constantly improving I'm very happy to say. Dave back in the day, when I was still in High School I got to go over to the Great Northern's Hillyard Locomotive repair shops in Spokane WA, they had a service shop that housed 10 locomotives side by side they bring them in and out on a bridge trolley....... Those days the Hillyard facility had a 13 track switch yard the engine repair shops a car shop and a paint shop, as well as a Cold Storage Facility. Just north of the Yard was the Western Fruit Express Service Yard where they serviced the refeer cars as well! Hillyard was named after GN Founder James J Hill and way its own town until the 20's/30's when Spokane grew big enough and annexed the town! as a neighborhood in NE Spokane. Hillyard in its heyday was the largest GN facility west of St Paul MN as well! its all pretty much all gone now but the memory is still there!

One of those tasks that's more involved than just changing a brake shoe. It's ironic but a friend of mine who lives along the Union Pacific main in Nebraska winds up seeing this about once a month by his house where they send out two cranes to a well graded flat spot on a siding and usually change out a traction motor but sometimes a truck.
