the openness in front of the Palace is amazing compared with today. Traffic is not allowed near the guard today. The size of the musical support is also terrific.

Mark Smith in 1979, the Central band still had A & B bands....we could field a band of 70 quite easily. On this video I am in the back rank, left hand corner as we leave the Palace gates...

My weren't the Guards slim in those days? They actually looked and behaved like soldiers . They could march properly too!

I remember the tune the Corps of Drum is playing at the end. It's called "Haslemere" and was always played by the ACF band of my cadets who also played another bugle march incessantly called, "Mechanised Infantry". I had also forgotten that 1979 looked so old fashioned!!! The SLR would also vanish soon after this video was made and in came the clumsy-looking SA 80 that is still going strong.

The height requirements were more stringent back then... they are pretty much non-existent nowadays. Guards are getting shorter and thicker.

WTf are you talking about. So much has changed, especially now that we have extremely low standards in discipline, fitness and regimentation. Today, it's a fucking joke! The standard is so poor they have to recruit from abroad because families are not turning out sons that can do anything but piss about on their phones and play stations. Poor is an understatement, it's a disgrace to all who have made the grade here in this video and up until the early 1990's before it went to shit.

Note too the change in attitude and presentation of the police. No baseball caps or tattoos, and they don't slouch around chewing gum like so many scruffs on any street corner.
@Perseus7567
@Perseus7567 Год назад
The baseball caps serve a purpose. Not only are they another place to write "POLICE" for easy identification, they also have cameras attached. Hat cameras provide better, more consistent camera footage than bodycams. You also forget nowadays police can't stand at attention eyes forward dressed all smart. They have to be looking around for terrorists, like the one who blew up some guards not 3 years after this video's events - and they have to have the equipment [guns, vests etc] to deal with said terrorists. Police had no control over this.
@1977ajax
@1977ajax Год назад
@@Perseus7567 Then who does? You're just trying to make excuses for low recruitment standards, and low standards generally.
@Perseus7567
@Perseus7567 Год назад
@@1977ajax Then who does what? "Then who does" as a response to what I said what makes no sense. It's not lower recruitment standards, it's changing times. You can not protect from terrorism if you're standing in the most formal uniform you have, with no equipment, standing still with eyes front. Police rightfully should leave such ceremonial aspects to the professional soldiers who train for months to be able to do it - police rightfully so should instead focus on watching the crowds and protecting people. I swear, with some people you just can't win. I bet if the police were like 1979 again and a terrorist attack happened, you'd be the first to complain the police weren't prepared enough and they should've been paying attention.

@@1977ajax Oh, I see. You're unable to understand basic implications that 99.99% of the population would have gotten instantly. Yes sir, I sure do wonder who causes terror attacks, not the terrorists or anything. Also, "You are a liar": lol
