*Love the size and weight of this little jointer **MyBest.Tools** Easy to set up and light enough to pick up and put away. The adjusters and controls are dead easy to use. It has an aluminum deck rather than iron, but for those who are careful it should suffice, and it has a vacuum port that, unlike some other tools I have, actually gathers ALL the dust. Very happy with this for the price.*
Thanks Larry. I just got a several years old Delta jointer that was never used. A bit of rust from being exposed (out of the box). Even the blades had a small amount of corrosion on them, but still oily when I removed them. This is my first jointer, so I really had no idea how to set the new blades up correctly. Thank heavens for RU-vid and creators like you! It is now up and running and my first use worked perfectly!
Thanks for the lesson. I just received a new set of blades for my jointer and was wondering how install the new set. I would have eventually figured it out, but a quick lesson is always a big help.
Changed my blades today on my jointer. You can remove the red guard by loosening the two bolts that attach it to the unit. I took them out and cleaned the guard of dust. Add some Never Sieze as you replace the bolts. Good time to clean the inside of the electronics too.
I just clamped some vice grips onto the metal bracket that holds the guard so it rests against the pliers. Didn't want to waste the duck tape. You didn't mention the allen screw size - on mine it's either 5/32 or 4mm. I guess those are virtually the same size so it may not matter. I'm having a rough time removing the blades - I got my jointer used and while it's in good condition I don't think the blades were ever changed. I had the bright idea of using an impact driver to speed up the process and so far I've rounded out the fitting on one screw and sheared the bit off in another. I've decided to let the rest soak in some PB Blaster but I'm going to have some fun removing those 2...
I love PB Blaster. Sorry, I keep my Allen wrenches in a drawer and have no idea what size they are, I just use the one that fits.😄. I’ve had good luck with screw extractors you can get a different places but those are case hardened so you’re right, your in for a fight. Good luck.
Good video Larry. Thank you. Just ordered my blades. Getting the ones from Delta as the Powertec ones get a lot of complaints about dulling quickly, even with softwoods. I'll see how long the Delta blades stay sharp.
Good review. I found that you can use the same allen wrench to loosen two bolt that hold the cover and they slip up into holes then slip off, no need to take the bolts out. But your duct tape method would take less time.
Thanks Ron for the kind comments. I'll look for those bolts next time. Never run out of duct tape uses. My teacher friends once gave me a calendar with a use of duct tape for everyday of the year. 😃
I found blades at Lowes for under $20 ($16 if I remember correctly) that fit my 6 inch delta jointer, they don't seem any better than factory but not any worse either. Most likely the same as original as they were in porter cable brand packaging
Larry, thanks. Inherited the same little joiner and I am about to install new knives. Might try the magnet jig first, if to frustrating……your method for sure. Have you ever tried adjusting the in and out feed tables? With 4 screws….looks a bit intimidating! Stay safe
Hope the video helps. I’ve never tried to adjust either of the tables, never seen any reason to mess with them. Good luck and thanks for sharing and watching.
@@LSatch got some extractors from Irwin and they did the trick. Do you have a jointer knife sharpening video? I saved my old ones but I’ve never sharpened jointer knives and would love to get any tips or tricks you might have.
@@davidarmentano I have extractors, they work great. Here is my review of sharping. Hope it helps Deulen 12" Jointer/Planer Knife Sharpening Jig review
Very good information Larry! You mentioned that you touch up used blades with a sharpening tool/ machine. Might I ask what the name of the tool? Thanks. Chris.
Sure Chris, I use a Deulen sharpening jig. You can find it here: www.amazon.com/Deulen-Jointer-Planer-Knife-Sharpening/dp/B004VDK692 I also made a video review of it. I really like it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wByjbQmJrBE.html Thanks for watching and posting the nice comment. Good luck
When buying new blades, anything specific that I should look for in terms of sizing? Just make sure its a planer blade, 6 inch and has four holes? Anything else?
Good video. i have the same jointer (got it off of a local staircase builder who didn't use it or know where it came from. sold it to me for $40!). I agree, the fence blows. lol Can you post the link to the blades that you ordered? Thanks!
I've been trying for years to replace my blades. The screws are unremovable. I've put all kinds of solvents on the screws trying to loosen them. I even headed the screws up with a torch without any movement. Love this tool, but need to change the blades.
There was a viewer in the comments with the same problem. He used screw extractors, probably like these, www.lowes.com/pd/SpeedOut-8-1-8-in-Double-Ended-Screw-Extractor/1000170531?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-tol-_-ggl-_-LIA_TOL_215_Power-Tool-Accessories-_-1000170531-_-local-_-0-_-0&ds_rl=1286981&gclid=CjwKCAjw5s6WBhA4EiwACGncZRL4XB4wMaLS7UGkLHwsfP7mkOarB0OertFBtF9VlhmjMLH6dsmAShoCD0oQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds I’ve had good luck with this set. Worth a try. Hope it works for you
@@bluefish849 I can’t find it either. Sorry, I just realized there was no description with this video. I got them through Home Depot website, POWERTEC 6 in. High-Speed Steel Jointer Knives for Delta 37-070 JT160 (Set of 2).
I’m not sure but you should be able to order them here. www.ereplacementparts.com/delta-parts-c-3275.html?source=gaws&gclid=CjwKCAjw5dqgBhBNEiwA7PryaJ-ZA_wn49uKl1KZ3XHL6TYiP_gc8d5REeT9s-mRxB5ukZVPmoD3vBoCkOMQAvD_BwE Hope this helps.
I’m sorry to hear that. Mine were not stuck or frozen. My best advice is to try a penetrating oil. I’ve had good luck with Blaster PB Penetrant but there are others. Good luck, hope you get them.
Try putting a light, from phone or flash light on the out feed bed and see if you see any light. You should be able to see very little or you can also see if the light is consistent across the blade. Hope this helps
Anybody have changed the ball bearing? The original one have a steel seal that alaws de dust to come inside. I will replease it with a doble rubber seals, 2RS.
How do you clean the surface of yours. Mine is 20 years old and needs a good cleaning? Been using it lately to joint small 1x and they seem to stick to the surface or not slide so well. I have this jointer, Anyways looks just like it. I bought it 20 years ago while building my house. Used it to joint 1x and then put a 45 degree bevel on the edges for an exposed ceiling. Have exposed beans about 30" on center and put the 30" 1x in between the beams. Everyone says my ceiling is beautiful.
Mine has an aluminum top so I’m assuming yours does too. I use 10w40 and 0000 steel wool for my machine tool tops. Followed by some paste wax. You ceiling does sound nice. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope this helps. Larry
@@LSatch Thanks for the quick reply! So just plain old 10w40 motor oil and sounds like very fine steel wool After that paste was. Sorry just looking for confirmation to the motor oil. I have not done anything to mine since I bought 20 years ago. But it was idle for most of those years. Finally got it out of the side of my automobile garage and into a spot where I can use it when I needed it. Thanks again, buddy. Keep up the good work! Going to subscribe!
@@LSatch Thanks for clarifying! I am 72 and I do not know how many times a week I think about doing something, Get up from my computer, think about 10 other things on my way to my work shop, then when I get there, I say, what they hell was I going to do? Takes a while, but it generally comes to me about the time I get back to my computer. Getting old is not for sissies. LOL!
