You may have noticed it's been awhile since our last video on the Japan Red E92 M3, and that's because we wanted to get the Rod Bearings changed before doing anything else with the car!
In this video our Technician Aston explains the process of the job, along with taking a closer look at the Rod Bearing Shells themselves, what they do and why they wear.

Aston did a very good explanation of the failure. When I bought my 2015 M6 I thought I was excluded from the rod bearing failure... But unfortunately u can probably tell what happend. Luckily my car was under 3rd party warrenty so I am soo happy but if you have a s63 engine please get your oil sampled and prevent what happend to me

This was a pleasant "episode"... as always :) The bearing on my 2008 M3 was in a much much better condition after preventive swap at 74,000 miles! The previous, and first owner, didn't lie when he said he never abused the engine cold. Not an regular basis anyway. Just got a little more confidence in my car, I thank you for that! Please keep the E9xM content coming. Any thoughts on doing something crazy like long headers, LSD... or why not a stroker kit? :P

If you’re budgeting to get them done we don’t overly see the point in waiting for a certain mileage. We have heard a few stories where they failed a few thousand miles before the owner felt they needed to be changed. We would advise changing them at 60k+ for peace of mind, but if it were my personal car I would get them changed as soon as I bought it. I’m not going to do 70k so it just gives me ultimate peace of mind.

Great video and really informative. It looks to me like the rods are paired so I just wondered what stops them from wearing against each other where the two faces are side by side?
@EvolveAutomotive
@EvolveAutomotive 3 года назад
I asked Raza from RK for a better explanation of this - “Everything touches each other but they’re riding on their centerline axis so the interference is minimal and negligible. The oil is also being pushed out of the bearings and pushes each rod away from each other and the crank itself, that’s how the entire system stays floating with clearances”
@stumonkey17

What mileage would you suggest changing the bearings? I bought my E92 M3 in 2016 with 16k miles on a 12 plate. 2 owners before me. You did my stage 2 for me. Car is currently on 29k miles and I always warm it up. Oil is changed once a year regardless of miles done. Oh, and absolutely loving the Carbon Plenum 😁👌
@EvolveAutomotive
@EvolveAutomotive 3 года назад
The problem always is you just can’t be sure how the previous owners treated the car. If you’re thinking of selling it in the next 10-20k I probably wouldn’t worry too much, but if it’s a forever car I’d probably do it just so I knew it was all good. Glad you’re enjoying the car! Ours really needs the full Eventuri and Stage 2 now 🤩

Evolve Automotive Awesome vid BTW kudos to you and your mechanic , So your saying that a well maintained , frequent oil changes the rod bearings can last much longer than 70k ?? Can you tell me does this apply to the M5/M6 S63tu do they have the same rod bearing issue ? Thanks
@akkando
@akkando 3 года назад
@@EvolveAutomotive I would argue testing show that they don't work, otherwise we wouldn't all be putting fresh bearings and bolts in. Also the BE spec ARP bolts are much easier to install instead of the complex OEM bolt torque procedure. The BE spec ARP bolts reduce the chance of a mistake during install, so at the very least I would use those no matter what bearing goes in the engine.
@akkando
@akkando 3 года назад
@@Antimatter. There have been plenty of cases of cars that have been treated well spinning a bearing, and cars that are treated like crap that are fine. It would seem a bigger factor is the variance of clearance from car to car because there is always SOME variance with bearing size, or maybe some OEM bolts come a little loose over time as they stretch.
@markshaw4949
@markshaw4949 5 месяцев назад
Hi. I notice in your rod bearings videos you don't appear to measure the rod journals with a micrometer or use plastiguage to measure the clearance between the new rod bearings and the crank. Never, because in an engine rebuild, they aren't going for economy, less fuel consumption or emissions. Therefore, they made the clearance way bigger than factory, that they never worry about ever changing. But just like any engine, it does require reaching optimum temperature before hammering it otherwise you will destroy a forged engine also.
@scotwilson4169
@scotwilson4169 3 года назад
The whole point of rod bearings, and most bearings tbh is that they act as the weak point in the system, sort of a sacrificial part. Thats why they're made of white metal with a substantially lower melting point than all other materials, so you can do as these guys did and swap them out. Which is A LOT better than having to potentially replace crankshaft and conrods in the event of a failure. You can also send a sample of your oil off to somewhere like Intertek (not sure if they do non-commercial customers) and they will analyse your oil for metal particles, specifically white metal. So if you have a high quantity of white metal in your oil you know your bearings are on their way out. Don't know many people that do that though, its a bit of a hassle.

What is possible and what is not worth it if it’s too much trouble or cost because of incompatibility depending if it’s from F or G platform 😊 Or if it’s more easier to use other brands like Aza Auto Wheel, Recaro etc. In other words make it modern and sporty within reasonable price and without hassle or decoding.
