How to replace the water and ice filter on the Whirlpool French Door Side-By-Side Fridge. After replacing the filter, you will need to dispense at least 4 gallons of water to get rid of the carbon in the filter plus any air before using it. It's recommended that this filter be changed every 6 months or so. The Fridge will chime and alert on the screen.

I just recently had my water filter compartment door fixed because I accidentally jammed it in. When you lift off the compartment door, the old water filter pops out for an easy removal. Apparently I broke that function because I was having trouble taking it out. Anyway the repair job is done, but I want to make sure that the next time I have difficulty in taking out the old water filter within 6 months, I don’t destroy that pop-out function. So the way you took out that water filter was gently, not a forceful pull, right?

My filter on my whirlpool refrigerator did not pop out like shown in the video at all its actually stuck in the housing I've shut water off (which I know you normally don't need to) in hopes of maybe relieving some pressure so that I can pull it out any advice on getting the original filter out would be greatly appreciated

Problem fixed!!!! Thanks Handy Hudsonite!! My water filter was stuck. I'm a 72 year old great grandmother and I read all the posts on all the youtube posts and this post had the fix. I made sure to turn off the circuit breaker, couldn't shut off the water because I could not find the turn off knob. Anyway, be sure you unplug or turn off circuit breaker. I used the screwdriver on the 10:00 and 6:00 position, gently wriggling. Used an adjustable pliers and it came out pretty easily. I strugged for at least 30 minutes prior trying to get the filter out. This was my second filter change so I knew how to do it but the darn thing was stuck. Fixed. Hallelujah. Thanks a Million!!!!

Mary u really got me confused... I changed my water filter in about 10 minutes... I didn't need to turn off a circuit-breaker... I didn't need to get out any tools.. No screwdrivers, no hammers, no crowbars... I could be wrong... It wouldn't be the first time... So I hope u changed your filter the right way.. Mine seems to be working OK... I reset the Change water filter indicator... I'm going to write to HH regarding draining 4 gallons of water before you start using it.. Yes I'm clear it needs to be done... It's just my picture is only 32 fluid ounces and there's 64 fluid ounces in a gallon… that's it for now... It looks like you sent your note to HH 10 months ago…I hope you're water filter change in the interim was successful & that all of ur water filter replacements r a piece of cake…That's it for now.. @bongo579 you’re ridiculously ignorant if you can’t understand what her comment is referring to. HER FILTER WAS STUCK INSIDE THE HOUSING AND SHE COULDN’T GET IT OUT. She had to use screwdrivers and/or adjustable pliers to grip it and wiggle it out of the housing because it wouldn’t simply slide out. Voila. You’re welcome for translating.

Actually.... it is also a good idea to empty your ice maker reservoir too. That ice may contain the old unfiltered water. I empy mine when I replace my filter in my Whirlpool side by side refrigerator :)

Hi Handy. Good video. One item that differed between my owner's manual and your video is the following info from my owner's Manual: "Once the water begins to flow, continue depressing and releasing the dispenser pad (5 seconds on, 5 seconds off) until a total of 3 gals. (12 L) has been dispensed." The frig is a new Whirlpool purchased Jan 2024. I have two theories on why they specify this: (1) Closing the water supply valve via the water dispenser "shocks" the water system every 5 seconds when the solenoid valve closes. This could cause additional particles to dislodge. (2) Keeping the solenoid valve energized while you pump 3 gallons could cause it to overheat. Of course, the repeated ON-OFF every 5 seconds doesn't seem really great for it either! I don't know that either of these is accurate..... just my initial thoughts.

My fridge has an incredibly slow drip from the dispenser. I replaced with the "one drop" filter, no change. I had a reputable fridge repairman come. He checked all lines, hosing, and even changed the casing. I placed a brand new filter, still have a ssllooww drip. Any thoughts?

Great video! I just want to note that a gallon is 128 ounces, so that container is probably not a gallon container. You advised your fridge measures in ounces, so it appears the container is like 50 something ounces. If you are really require to filter 4 gallons through the new filter, just keep that in mind. Otherwise, an awesome video.

This is easy enough to learn, however when we lift up the filter door the filter does not pop out. We can't get the filter out at all.

I have the same Whirlpool refrigerator and I dont think this model requires a BYPASS cap like other models do. If you dont need or want the water filter (which in my case I dont need a water filter because I have a whole house water filter on my main water supply to my house). I removed my water filter and didnt install any kind of Bypass Cap and the water still flows and operates as normal.

Great video! I moved into a rental home, and after replacing the filter the water still has teeny tiny microscopic dots in it that settle. Is that just calcium from hard water, and will it stay that way or do I have a water line problem? It tastes just fine. Thanks!

At 50 bucks a hit, I run mine for 1 year, they are on a timer,not a dirty water tester. Sometimes water tastes like a disinfectant even with new filter.

Sorry to hear you're having that issue. I've heard of others that run into this. It's possible that the o-ring is frozen, causing the filter to not move. It could be due to some other issue also. Here is what the Whirpool site recommends: If the water filter is stuck: **Try closing and re-opening the Water Filter Compartment Door Ensure the door is fully opened Turn off the water to the Refrigerator and purge some of the water from the water line line, using the water dispenser. Dispense several cups of water, this will release some of the water pressure in the water line. After purging the water line, try removing the water filter.** - Hope this can help you out. My filter would not come out either. If you look there is a little brass hex head screw holding the housing over the filter. Undo the screw and then you can push the filter out from behind. When I popped it out, I found the problem. There is a T shaped plastic piece with a hook that is supposed to pull the filter out when u open the door. It popped out. I just placed it back in its grooves, hook side down.

My latch assembly broke so it would not pull out the old filter and the doors is flopping. I was able to grip the old filter with a channellock pliers and pull it out. I thought it was wrecked but I pushed the new one in and the door still snaps and locks shut. It went in firm and so I don't think water pressure will pop it out but I am watching it. It is working now.

Add the same refrigerator to. But you really expect me to change the $50-60 filter every six months. This sounds like a scam. How does this filter no it needs to be replaced? I do have a in-line filter before the refrigerator, that filter supposed to replaced every 5-10 years.

I have the same problem. My ice maker stopped working after changing my filter with a new one I got from Amazon. I returned the filter and got the name brand one to replace the knock off one (I didn’t realize it was a knockoff) but ice maker still not working. I can hear the engine but no ice. Any thoughts?

Are you sure the water is hooked up properly to your water line? How was the fridge transported? Did you make sure to transport it with the fridge upright, not laying down on its side?

@@HandyHudsonite yep. Everything was hooked up right. Transported upright on a trailer. It's weird cuz when you first hot the water, it spits out just a little then stops.

Thanks for your question. It's possible the end of the filter could be frozen causing it to be difficult to remove. You may want to take off the outer covering so you can see the other end of the filter better to determine what's wrong. It's also possible that an issue with the o-rings on the end of the filter are causing it to be stuck.

Great video. Could you explain why filter door is not snapping close, I have to tape door and why there is never air coming out when new filter is installed? Could it be water is not being filtered?

I’m sorry, but where is the video on how to turn off the alarm sound with change filter notification?? Honestly, I’ve always hated this refrigerator with a passion, the water comes out so slowly that I will never be able to fill 4 gallons without spending over an hour standing in front of this refrigerator. I could walk to my neighbors house fill up a glass of water from her refrigerator and walk back before I would ever get 8 ounces out of this refrigerator. Thank you for your helpful tutorial, but I will never buy whirlpool again. Secretly hoping it breaks altogether so I can replace it.

Sorry to hear that. Are you sure it was seated properly? You may want to take it out and make sure it's inserted right.

I noticed that the filter on a Whirlpool fridge is no longer half an inch from the floor where it could dust-bathe daily and meet all kinds of interest six- and eight-legged creatures. Did Whirlpool ever say why it ever was done there or why they moved it?

Great question. I haven't been able to find anything on that, but I would imagine it's because of it being a hassle for many people to have to get on all fours to replace it. We had a fridge like that - it wasn't too bad but it would get dirty for sure. Thanks for watching.

Just ordered this fridge. Had an issue with the freezer door sticking out further than the fridge side due to thicker weatherstripping. I have a replacement coming. Hopefully its not a common problem. Do your doors close evenly side by side or does the freezer side stick out a bit like its not fully closed, even though it is?

My nice whirlpool stopped making ice! I can hear the motor kick on trying to "make ice" but no ice. I've change the only water filter like the one you are showing us but, that hasn't help. Can you help me?

i appreciate your video on changing filter. When i changed the filter, i am getting a leak from the filter area. I tried to buy another filter and still leaks, whats your opinion

Thanks for your question, Ziyad. It sounds to me that you might have a leak at the seal of where the filter connects into the line. You may want to inspect back there to see if the seal is broken or not seated properly or some other issue is going on. The fact the second filter also leaks leads me to believe it's with a part in your fridge. Hope this helps.

I have had a Whirlpool refrigerator for three years, but I have never used the ice maker or water dispenser. However, the filter light is still on. Under such circumstances, I do not belive I even need to install a new one. Am I right? Thanks!

Any idea why on the 3 month old fridge after changing filter and draining just about gallon of water, now no water will come out. Hear buzzing but that’s about it
