Weston McKennie was sent off for the US with the first red. The third goal was originally ruled offside, but on review they ended up allowing the goal. The people putting the highlight package together still apparently have some learning to do on how to put a Soccer match package together. The game was ended early because the Mexican fans were continuing to chant "discriminatory slurs" during the goal kicks. That's CONCACAF for you, it's a very crazy style of football.
Welcome to the USA-Mexico rivalry! If you think this was bad, you should check out the Round of 16 match between the USA and Mexico during the 2002 World Cup, a match full of cheap and dirty fouls. The chants that ended the match are what the US national team hear at almost every away match against Mexico or Central American opponents, as well as the debris being thrown at US players during these matches. As an American football fan, I THOROUGHLY enjoy every time we beat Mexico!
@Baa-vy9wb I am an American and I only call it soccer because everyone around here does. But it is called football. American football should have been named something else
One interesting note (in a positive way): Pulisic's brace put him on exactly 25 goals for the United States. He is the sixth player to reach the 25-goal milestone for the Americans, and he did it in the fewest caps (59).
Some clarification: 1. The 3rd goal was the one you saw by Pepi. It was initially called offside but VAR confirmed the goal as on. It looks like the highlights are edited very poorly. 2. The game ended early after an initial game stoppage for 'discriminatory chants' by the Mexico fans a few minutes earlier, and subsequent 2nd offense. 3. That straight red by Mexico was after a string of extremely questionable/dangerous fouls, one leaving Gio Reyna's face bloodied.
Re: 3rd point. Yes, the Reyna foul LOOKED bad, due to the blood, and initially I was all for a red being called for it. Looking at the replay though, the defender wasn't being malicious, it was just a shoulder to the nose. Wrong place, wrong time kind of play. Also, McKenna red flag was a little bogus to me, as I felt he was trying to defend himself after being completely surround and set upon by a lot of the Mexican players. I still have no clue why Pulisic got that yellow card, too.
@@THEDisneyNerd I mean, I don't support the chant at all, but Mexicans will tell you it's not homophobic and have another word that is genuinely homophobic (won't quote it here). Excuse my directness, but it literally translates to "bitch" and is used in a bunch of contexts. Again - don't support it's use at all but to pretend there are no nuances from the Mexican standpoint would be disingenuous.
The “discriminatory chant” is basically a feature of Mexico football fans at this point. They had to play a qualifier behind closed doors during the last cycle because of it. Add in the bottle throwing and shining lasers into the eyes of opponents and referees and Mexico should be forced to play every home match behind closed doors or just start getting stuck with forfeits.
@@dex1lsp I think they should give a warning for the first "puto" chant of the game. After that, each successive chant results in a red card to random Mexican field player. After a game or two, the chant would stop.
It's funny because if you know the history of the chant you would know it's not homophobic, people are so sensitive nowadays. Why didn't they boycott the Qatar world cup? They kill gays
To be honest, I have never seen highlights as poorly done as these though. These highlights were shambolic. Anyone in the comment section could have done a better job than this.
@@paulmiller7838eah they are awful as an American who loves football we absolutely despise the fact our highlights suck. I just watch the Spanish ones because they are much better. Also the World Cup commentators for US tv this year were atrocious never never ever let fox sports do anything with football they were genuinely so bad I watched games in Spanish and Arabic instead.
United States are f**kin legit bro, I'm telling u we are starting to embrace the sport and really trying to improve with both our National Team and our League 💪🏽🔥🇺🇸
McKennie made contact with the throat of an opposition player. By rule, that is an automatic straight red. Where it gets dodgy (and the reason it did *NOT* warrant a red card, IMO), is that he was being pushed about and surrounded by 7 Mexican players. One might easily infer that he simply put his hands up in self defense, and that the contact with the throat was unplanned and incidental. Dest (the second American red) deffo should have walked away. But in the heart of the moment, with all the nonsense that was happening, I completely understand why he lost his head. Once the match reaches added time, the referee may call the game complete if circumstances warrant. He judged (correctly, in my view) that the crowd's behaviour (throwing debris on the pitch, homophobic chants, etc) posed a risk to safety. The outcome was decided. Even without the goals, that was the sharpest I've seen Pulisic in some time. He and Dest were carving that right back like a Christmas goose.
@@kdlspk I heard the chants of "PUT0!" over the broadcast. I don't speak much Spanish at all. I believe, however, that the word is the masculine form of the Spanish word for "whore", most commonly translated as "b1tch" when applied to men. It may not necessarily translate as universally homophobic, but the word does land that way upon the ears of native English speakers. The French and Italian translations of the word are "putain" and "putana". They are used similarly to the Spanish (I do speak French, FYI), and are definitely homophobic by implication, when directed at men.
This is the internet so you can choose to or to not believe me, but I am Pulisic’s 2nd Cousin. He’s a really nice guy and back when I played club soccer, or football, he actually sent me and my other cousins autographs to pass around the team. The guys a really nice guy and is honestly a lot more shy then he seems on the pitch.
He comes across as a nice kid from Pennsylvania. I hope he can stay healthy and remain humble when he reaches his potential. He needs to leave Chelsea.
Every time USA and Mexico play each other, Mexican players start fights with USA players whenever Mexico is losing late in the games. It literally happens every match.
The game was played by both teams fairly well (as to sportmanship) until about 15-minutes were left to full-time when a couple of the Mexican players saw the 2-0 score in US favor, and then the s....t hit the fan with some very nasty takedowns by the Mexican players. A couple of yellow cards came out, one for each side, but then the wheels came off the tracks for the Mexican players and they cornered a US player near their sideline and then red cards came out. From what I saw, the Mexican players became very frustrated with the game score and began trying to hurt US players.
Weston and Sergino were sent off for USA. I’m not sure of the names for mexico, but the guy who made the dirty play on Balogun and the guy who you saw Sergino get in the scrum with were also sent off on the Mexican side. As for the third goal, it showed it. Initially it was ruled offside and VAR ruled it onside. The highlights are choppy because the Mexican fans were chanting racial and homophobic slurs and they had to cut as much of it out as possible, so that made the highlight reel choppy. The game was called early because the Mexican fans wouldn’t stop chanting a word that is the spanish word for the F word in the english language, and the F word I’m referencing is a deragatory word for a gay man. That’s in acordance of the new CONCACAF policy. If you chant racial or homophobic slurs once it’s a verbal warning through the loud speakers. Second time is a three minute pause in play. A third time is the final whistle sounds and the game ends at whatever point it was at and with whatever scoreline it was on. Also if you are wondering if this is new, it’s not. During USA vs mexico games there’s usually fights and brawls in the stands, there’s been instances with one set of fans urinating on and throwing bagged vomit at the other set of fans, throwing of objects including chairs, drinks, food, and other ridiculous objects from the stands…in other countries there’s been stray animals running onto the field during the game, firecrackers and gunshots around hotels where players are housed to unnerve them, all sorts of incredible violence in the stands have been reported not just at occasional USA vs mexico games but more so at other games in CONCACAF…it’s a very scrappy and rough confederation. It may have the talent of CONMEBOL or UEFA but it certainly has a bunch of the other stuff. The slurrs chanted by mexico fans during set pieces never used to be widespread and you could barely hear them, but because they are now making a big deal about it it’s relentless and the whole stadium does it just to be obnoxious and add extra stuff to the craziness that already exists.
One correction. The first Mexican player was sent off for kicking Balogun. Nobody was red carded for the Weston scuffle except Weston. Edit: perhaps that was typo on your part and you know this already...
Racial and homophobic slurs? The only chant i know they have a problem with is saying “puto” which has different meanings. The older original meaning was used for gay people but now it can have different meanings it could even be used in a compliment. The more literal translation of “fag” would be “marícon”
Needles to say I am NOT mexican but I've been following M. Ochoa's career because back in the day he was a wall nothing would get passed him. Let's go US🇺🇸
I’m American. Ochoa is class. Full stop. He’s the best player on their team. The guy is legend. I hate he has to be dragged down by the behavior of the rest of this side.
US in general, and Pulisic in particular were quick, and they dominated Mexico for the entire match. There's been bad blood between the two teams for decades. Hard to believe this was a US home match. It was played in Nevada, but it seemed like a home match for Mexico. And when El Tri are actually playing at home, the anti-usa abuse is much more intense.
The third goal was the goal for Pepi it was called offsides but VAR checked it, the highlights didnt show it though. And McKennie got red carded the first red card for the USA. Also the game was called because of Mexico fans saying Puto after three warnings.
American here. The red called the game early because it was VERY CLEAR this game was not going anywhere and it was getting out of hand. I read once reg time is complete the ref can call the game regardless of what extra time he gave
Abandoned for discriminatory homophobic chants. The match was stopped beforehand (89th minute) under CONCACAF policies, and the Mexican fans did it worse in the 98th, abandoning the match.
@@michaelfalkner1186 yep i remember when Turner took a goal kick and they did their "chant". That is how their fanbase is and they will continue to be second to the U.S.
@@IncredibleStan And now you have a theory that the Mexican fans want their nation's team dismantled and exiled -- they're so bad (by Mexican standard), the fans want the team eliminated.
@@michaelfalkner1186 this is exactly what it is. The US has it a little where politicking can take precedence over talent. But Mexico takes it to a different level. The association hasn’t fielded a strong team in years despite having some serious talent. They’d rather choose a select few players and make decisions based on money, and the fans are getting fed up. The chants only started back up when it was obvious there was no coming back from a 2-0 lead
This didn't show the stoppage of play because of the anti-gay chats. He stopped it for a while, and then started the 12 minutes of stoppage time. After 7 minutes the anti-gay chats continued so the ref ended the game. It's a typical Mexico/USA game when Mexico gets down. They start fights
These highlights were terrible lol But this game was wild. The match got called early because Mexican fans kept doing a homophobic chant. Embarrassing night for the Mexican federation
@@jvjustvibes9103 It holds different connotations among different Latin American countries and colloquially in Mexico and in this context it means f*g. Stop it.
@@jvjustvibes9103 when one of the many translations is a gay slur and another is a male s*x worker its homophobic plus ur teh same fan base that chanted bin laden's name in 2004
The Mexican crowd kept chanting puta and they do that all the time but this time they ended the game because of it because it was basically over anyway
@Manuelito Oh, I know EXACTLY what the fuck it means. You just don't understand the full scope of what actually constitutes homophobia. It may not be straight-up literal, but it is CERTAINLY implied, and it is, in fact, often directed at gay people or people perceived to be gay.
My spidey sense thinks on why this USA vs MEX semi match highlights were disorderly edited due to a possible MEX heritage producer. Since the CAN vs PAN semi match highlights were smoothly edited w/o biases.
On the second goal, Pulisic made a 50 yard run, blowing past two Mexican defenders, and slides at full pace while a Mexican defender is lunging toward him, just to get a touch on the ball..."finish wasn't great"...I subscribed to this channel just because of that comment. 😉
I went to the United States vs. Mexico World Cup qualifier in Cincinnati, and it was the same referee, Ivan Barton of El Salvador. While there were fewer incidents, the big one that Barton missed around the 69' mark; the U.S. had won a free kick off of a foul. Brenden Aaronson tried to get up from the ground to take the kick, but Luis Rodriguez basically tried to keep him down, and it looked like he was trying to gouge his eyes out. Amazingly, Rodriguez only got a yellow; McKennie and goalkeeper Zack Steffen were booked as well, and McKennie missed the next match due to yellow card accumulation. He still scored the second goal, however.
You really need more context. A Mexico player headbutted Reyna without getting a second yellow, ref completely lost control. The third goal was the one scored by Pepi, the highlights are just out of order. the ref ended early because the mexican fans were doing a homophobic chant whenever there was a goal kick.
The Mckennie red card was bs. This ref was beyond awful. Pulisic got a yellow for subbing out giving his armband to another player. Mexican fans kept chanting gay and racial slurs. Pulisic Weah and Reyna had great games. Wonderful result but what sucks is they announced Berhalter will be back as coach. Horrible decision.
The game was called early because the Mexican fans were chanting a homophobic slur that you can hear after the free kick at 97’. They were warned before and continued.
Of course, they're fast; they're young. Pulisic, Dest, Reyna, Pepi, McKennie -- average age 22. Just need a great GK in lieu of Steffan or Turner. Watch out for Slonina; he's only 19. 2026!
@@Queensizemusic - I'm not saying he's bad. But, to win a WC, the most important piece is a GK, one who is beyond fantastic (a word thrown around too many to be meaningful).
If you watch the clock in the corner, you'll see that the Pepi goal (the 3rd goal) was shown (but called offside), but then the clock goes back a few minutes to show Pepi getting subbed on, and then it goes "back to the future" one or two clips later to show the celebration since VAR reinstated the goal. Perhaps you've been told this already, but the ref blew the final whistle 5 minutes early because of the Mexican fans chanting a Spanish word that I'm not going to repeat, which is basically a crass word that is generally interpreted as an anti-gay slur. The problem is, FIFA is having difficulty getting that chant to stop because it's something that quite a few Mexican fans are in the habit of yelling every time the opposing goalkeeper takes a goal kick even in their own domestic league.
Welcome to concacaf man! This is typical. Concacaf is wild! The 3rd goal was the one you saw. They initially took it off but then gave it after var. 2 reds each team. I think 8 yellow cards. Earlier the ref paused the match for discrimination chants and then started again. I think he simply wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. Why he ended it early. Haha which isn't allowed. Concacaf is all I have to say.
@@areguapiri The Mexico fans where apparently chanting "puto" during goal and free kicks. I was only able to watch the "full" replay, but Paramount+ (aka CBS) edited almost all of that out from the live footage.
@@areguapiri lmao It’s every Latin American and Caribbean nation Canada and the US are the only outliers. Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Dominica, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, the Dominican Republic. They all pull this shit and I love it lol I wouldn’t want it any other way. CONCACAF has its own unique style and atmosphere and I personally think it’s great though not the most beautiful style of play.
Paramount/CBS screwed up the editing in the clip, the 3rd goal by Pepi was shown then it resets back to when Pepi was subbed in then shows the confirmation 3-0 VAR Replay.
The reason they ended the match early is because there were people saying discriminatory chanting in the stadium twice, the first time was in 89 mins where they suspended the match after people were chanting "PUTA" which means Fu**ers which is the same thing that happened on 97 Min except they suspended the match permanently.
The Mexican had other highlights like the crowd chanting slurs and had to stop the match. Keep in mind I’m not sure what they were saying in Spanish, but the match in Denver a couple years ago the same happened.
The US have some decent players now. Even in the Donovan days, the US played more like your local youth team than a proper outfit. This group can actually play football.
Has the US gotten this much better, or is mexico just awful right now? Or maybe a combination thereof? Gotta be a pretty rough time to be a mexico fan.
Definitely BOTH reasons. However, the US Soccer Federation apparently will self-sabotage their rare advantage by reappointing the nepotistically favored head-coach Beerholder.
That was the worst highlight video I’ve ever seen hahah but you did well to make some sense of it even though they left out pretty much all the pertinent information 😂
The goal that Pepi made was removed then counted. It took them a few minutes to realize it. The game ended up ending at minute 97. For “discriminatory chant” it’s the Spanish word for male prostitute
The Pepi goal wasn't disallowed the highlights just skipped backwards 10 min for some reason. The game was called early due to racist chants in the crowd. it was delayed once and then the second time it was called early.
Not only are the highlights bad, they weren't even in chronological order! They show the 3rd goal from the 78', then the very next highlight is from the Mexican attack during the 76', then they show the celebration of the 3rd goal when it was reviewed and given. They also did not show a crucial no-call moment where Reyna (#7 for the US) got his nose bloodied in a pretty rough challenge by a Mexican player already on a yellow. The ref gave a foul, no card. It was in the second half, around the 60'. Many people say that's where the ref really lost control of the match, if he ever had it. Anyway, that's CONCACAF for ya.
What I don't personally understand is how did the guy who grabbed McKennies shirt and push his face into his not get a red card. I know hands on the neck is a red card, but surely pushing your head into another persons is as well. Correct me if I am wrong. The game and the Mexican fans were pathetic with the cheap tackles, homophobic chants, thrown beers and lasers being used. An absolute disgrace.
The Mexican national team fans do some crazy stuff. At Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, they used to fill bags of pee and throw them from the upper decks to try and hit the field and US players. You always try to get seats under cover there. In retaliation some years ago, US striker Landon Donovan took a piss on the Azteca field during warm ups. Royally pissed the Mexican fans off. Mexican soccer in general plays a very physical style of game as well....downright dirty at times. They do like to move the ball, but playing really physical is a style when they get thwarted from their gameplan. Many US plays know Mexican Spanish slang and can swear just as well as the Mexicans, so it gets spicy. They do the puta chant when opposing goalkeepers do a long goal kick and CONCACAF doesn't like it, so they punish Mexican fans and the federation at times. The call the game too. Mexican fans know this and don't do it during close games or when they're winning but when they're losing or unhappy with national team play they will break it out again.
its funny watching people saying Pulisic shouldve made that goal in his first shot, but ive seen Europeans miss easier goals. they have that tone that any European woulve made that goal, but i bet even them would mess it from time to time. specially when there where 3 people in front of him
As I'm sure you figured out, the goal that was showed was the 3rd, they just mixed up the order of some of the shots, not sure how they made that big of a mistake and didn't catch it
they uploaded the highlights out of order. Pepis goal came before Pepi himself came on? bad. And yea Pepi's goal counted, Var confirmed Pepi was onside.
The game was hosted in las Vegas and had so many rowdy Mexican fans in attendance that the ref actually shortened the extra time by 5 minutes because of the chant the fans had been warned to quit singing!
@@jvjustvibes9103 1) soccer in USA has stiff competition from professional sports collegiate and even high school sports events. It doesn't have a tradition here. Instead there are hockey, football, baseball basketball track field and tennis traditions. 2) Latino culture even in us is muy macho. So the event management just knew enough Spanish to know that's a bad word. Mexican fans were mocking their own players as anti heroes.
@@jvjustvibes9103 I'm trying to let you know that while in warmer climates 22 kids get a ball and play soccer outdoors, in USA 10 kids get a ball from the basketball coach to play on a gym court at school or else play video games at home.
As a Brit, I don't think you quite understand the Mexico/US rivalry. It is unlike few others in the WORLD. That is a fact. Not opinion. It's nasty. Dirty. Just...baaaaaaaaaaad. The fact that the US has taken over Mexico in terms of talent and skill...fans of El Tri have a very hard time with this. Those fans ALSO know how corrupt and broken their Federation is. The reason why you don't know many of the Mexican players is because (for the most part) the FMF (Mexican Football Federation) keeps their players either local or in the MLS. They DISCOURAGE their players from playing in Europe. Mexican football is BROKEN and their fans know it.
The match was ended early due to fans and Mexico player threatening injury to USA players and Pepi goal was allowed after a review they just messed it up in the highlights
"I don't need another replay, we're getting another replay" lol welcome to US soccer coverage. if mexico had scored that same goal we *might* have gotten *one* replay. But yeah, testy, feisty, pointless assaults like that, and four red cards? Pretty mild by USA-mexico standards.
In the USA it's much better to watch soccer on Univision which means you have to brush up on your Spanish. It's an American Spanish language channel hence they're fans of both teams typically. They just cover the game better; everything from the camera shots, to the fans, to the analysis. Paramount/ CBS/ ESPN are all lousy, soulless, and clearly not soccer fans.
Both US red cards (McKennie & Dest) were for hands to the neck/throat/face in the scrums, both stupid, undisciplined moves but they'll get to watch the Final from the sidelines. Game was ended early because of the Mexican fans and their love of discriminatory (a.k.a. homophobic) chants, which are a staple of home games and especially when they're getting thrashed.
That was a awful highlight package. The third goal was the Dest to Pepi one that was initially ruled out for offside, but after VAR it was determined to be a goal. The game was called early because Mexico fans were doing a "chant" that has been deemed offensive by FIFA. They were warned once, the game was paused once, and then on the third time they called the game.
