Part 4 of the longest walk though Littlefinger you never knew you wanted.... (there may be spelling errors, if so sorry bout that, but it happens)
Somehow this one ended up even more rough and jumbled when I said things were going to get cleaned up... that's just how this series goes apparently lol
Big thanks to ‪@JessieBearBookClub‬ for the Puppetman synopsis! I had not read Wildcards and frankly I really wasn't going to have the time to do that while working on this series. She recorded the wonderful overview of Puppetman featured here in the video. So if you get a chance go say hi and check out her stuff and give the original Littlefinger X Puppetman she did a listen too as it really influenced me making this video.

This skeptical and down to earth approach to A Song of Ice and Fire is exactly what everyone needs. Everyone has gone insane spending the last decade or so reading GRRM's tea leaves. Would you consider doing a video series on Lyanna Stark and what the hell happened to her? Was Littlefinger involved? He'd want revenge against Brandon and the Starks.. and Brandon conveniently died in Kingslanding after someone told him that Lyanna was "abducted" by the King's son.

Thank you for the high praise! I am interested in talking about Lyana and Jon's parentage and the whole R + L = (X) thing at some point for sure, got a fair amount of thoughts on it. As for Littlefingers involvement, while I like the idea and I like the InDeepGeek theory I have yet to find anything that actually points to or verifies it, so short of LF admitting it to Sansa or something I think its a no go, at least to me.
@Mj_Jetson

the thing about Harrenhal is that its definitely tied to the deeper magic of the series. like the god's eye is kinda a magic black hole right in the center of the map; whatever final resolution to the series, be it a battle of a peace treaty or something, its very likely going to take place there. as its hard to reconcile LF's character with the mystery of the castle, i think that's why you get a ton of crazy LF-is-magic theories.
@randominternetguyoffical
@randominternetguyoffical 2 года назад
I'm not so much a fan of the idea of magic but I do agree that its proximity to the gods eye and the weirwoods doo give it a connection to some of the powers of the series. So yes I think that an ending near there or like at the shores of the Gods Eye is possible(?) But like a lotta things could happen so I'm still kinda hesitant to think its anything other than like a Red Harrenhalling for lack of better terms. Like its powerful and cool and got lore and all that but its not gonna be an essential element(?) Its at least worth considering imo and yes I think youre right about all that mystic stuff and "magic" surrounding the castle being a big part of why LF is associated with "magic".. or at least its a strong potential

My favorite literary comparison for Littlefinger is Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. They are aesthetically very different characters, but similar in terms of motivation and plot. Here is an outline of the similarities: A boy is fostered among his betters. He falls in love with his foster sister. Can’t marry her. He becomes rich. Through schemes takes control of his foster family’s lands. Marries a woman he doesn’t actually love for gain. His foster sister (one he’s in love with) dies. After his wife’s death, he takes control of her sickly son who doesn’t like porridge. He kidnaps his old love’s daughter. He forces her to marry a guy to gain her father’s ancestral lands. His foster sister comes back from death. Is this boy Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights or a certain character from ASOIAF?

I'm really loving your take on Littlefinger so far. Also, I think your point about Sansa and Jeyne Poole probably turning away from revenge by the end of the story is spot on, and I'm a little surprised I haven't heard more people bring this up. If the main narrative point of the Martell storyline is that pursuing revenge for years and years will ruin your life, it's not really going to make sense for any of the characters who make it through the story intact (relatively speaking of course) to cap off their arcs with acts of revenge. Even if Sansa doesn't make it to the end, too much narrative time has been spent on her interacting with petty court politics for that not to play some roll in her story, and for her to just straight up murder LIttlefinger out of revenge (or something to that effect) would fly in the face of the point that the story seems to be making that the "game of thrones" is bad.

Harrenhall actually has the most lands(of the riverlands) attatched to it which leads to the strange situation that the lord of Harrenhall has more land than the lord paramount of the trident seated at Riverun. However it seems to be a Castle Black situation where the castle is just too large to be maintained by the land attatched. This is the reason only few houses throve in possession of Harrenhall which is of course Littlefinger with his various businesses as well as house Strong who are a major house of first men descent and probably have another seat and income as well as house Harroway who have a whole town in addition.
@randominternetguyoffical
@randominternetguyoffical 2 года назад
That's certainly perplexing that Harrenhal has so much land attached to it... I want to just say, in universe incontinuity and or author error and be done with it but like maybe there is some rational reason why it would be left with large tracks of lands but like as one of the other commenters pointed out House Whent would have a hard time paying for tourneys. My thoughts might be along the line of maybe the area around Harrenhal while vast is under populated compared to other holdings and areas? Like maybe Lord Harroways town is the only major population hub it controls? Do we know what house holds Salt Pans?
@laurencehoffelder1579
@laurencehoffelder1579 2 года назад
@@randominternetguyoffical Salt Pans is controlled by house Cox according to awoiaf. Now while I thing it is author error that concerning the whole Harrenhal topic we can still try to make explantations. My guess would either be that Harrenhal was built as the seat of the King and as such would not be subject to taxes rather gaining some. This would explain why it, at first glance does not seem as beeing undesirable in financial aspects but is never the hoped grace. It would also explain why houses Harroway and Strong do quiet well if my assumption is correct that house Strong has other incomes as well. But to be clear this is just an assumption.

I think he does a very good job showcasing all of the different places it has come up. - [ ] Although the acknowledges the fact that Jon can’t be considered since his mother hasn’t been proven, he’s too quick to point towards R + L = J as cannon. Unpopular opinion but I’m a firm believer in N + A = J. I won’t argue it now but there’s good evidence for both sides. - [ ] Despite not being “real” evidence, I’m happy he lays out some of the historical references that may have influenced George when writing ASOIAF - [ ] I know I seem very critical from all that but I do agree with much of his evidence, and he acknowledges when there is tinfoil evidence that should still be considered. Excellent video. Starting part 3 now

@aripeters2412 2 года назад
Ok, so I just finished part 3, and I loved the video. I think he does a good job of laying out all the evidence, although I think he forgot to mention how Varys shaved his head to maybe conceal his Valyrian hair features. I like the point he made about how he was much more secure in Pentos than KL. Once again I’m happy that he’s quick to point out that much of the evidence is quite coincidental and that it’s not nearly as concrete as something like R+L=J because Jon was a literal baby that we see 9 months later. While I believe that Varys himself may be a blackfire, I find it hard to believe that Serra was by coincidence another lost blackfire and they bumped into each other again. You also have to consider what Varys was planning to do with the Dothraki and Danearys and viserys. Clearly he didn’t want the war of the 5 kings, but once it started what did he plan to do knowing that the Dothraki were coming across the sea??

There is one more thing - children of Emmon Frey and Genna Lannister might not be Emmon's. Cleos was supposed to resemble Frey but we don't know if these are, in truth, his children. But there is no doubt that these are Genna's children, i.e. Lannisters.
@randominternetguyoffical
@randominternetguyoffical 2 года назад
I think that though the kids might not be Frey, like you say Tywin and team Lion know that they are legally considered highborn and true born and are able to stake a Lannister claim (legit or not) to great house holdings and a power base in the river. I think its part of his greater play to consolidate power. He had planned under Robert to make Jamie Warden of the West and to take Sweet Robin to teh Rock so i think he was lockin things down for a Lannister future prior to his death and Riverrun was a target. Least that's my thoughts.
@barbaraludwiczak4728
@barbaraludwiczak4728 2 года назад
@@randominternetguyoffical Of course, no one would question the legitimacy of these children... not even Emmon Frey. And yes, Tywin wanted to consolidate the power, just as you said. As for Harrenhal, well, Cersei had given it to Janos Slynt of people, so when later on Tyrion offered it to Littlefinger the proposal seemed legitimate. I mean, Slynt was nobody, even worse than nobody, he was a treacherous murderer. Compared to Slynt, LIttlefinger belongs to aristocracy. And I like how all the Lannisters always think of Littlefinger as some low born. Cersei remebers how she turned down his proposal to marry Sansa because he was too low born, Jamie, he is certainly the best when he muses how good would it be if Littlefinger were the new hand of the king because he isn't threat to anyone being so low born and likeable. And only Tyrion sees LIttlefinger for the real threat that he is. I like how Tyrion first lied to Littlefinger that he would give him Harrenhal, but afterwards dared to criticize Tyrion for doing this for real. And according to Tyrion, Littlefinger wanted Harrenhal for one and only one reason - it was obtaining Harrenhal that made his marriage to Lysa Arryn possible. Oh, and Littlefinger totally paid Ser Mandon Moore to kill Tyrion during Blackwater.
@randominternetguyoffical
@randominternetguyoffical 2 года назад
@@barbaraludwiczak4728 Moore was def in LF's pay, hard agree As for Tyrions thoughts, Tyrion is like always (maybe not always but mostly) wrong about his thoughts and assumptions so I think this is an example of a classic Tyrion mistake. LF could have just married Lysa, he both already noble and landed and more over as PJ infamously points out "she's a grown ass woman and can marry who she likes".. Harrenhal tho as a historic an prolific seat but also as a give away token fills the gap, for both the Lannisters and LF LF gets to have a seat in the Riverlands which makes him eligible for the paramountship, but its a ruin so he doesnt have to live there (or really do anything with it at all). The Lannisters get to give away a ruin rather than say Darry or Riverrun, while fulfilling their end of the bargain to make LF Paramount over the Trident (and any living Tullys). Its about the Paramountship imo, thats why LF asks to confirm he'd be ruling over the Riverlands and any living Tully's, its about punkin house Tully and then getting to be Paramount.

@@randominternetguyoffical Yeah, and LF threw Lisa's grown ass out of the Moon Door. Tyrion might be wrong about many things, but he got LF right. Moreover, LF tried to get rid of Tyrion, like, thrice, as far as I remember. Once at Blackwater, and second time during "Purple Wedding". LF clearly wanted to kill Tyrion because Tyrion had lied to him - and, later on to free Sansa from her marriage. But, what puzzles me a bit, is the fact that LF blamed Tyrion for sending catspaw assasin. I mean, at that point of story, Tyrion did nothing wrong to LF (according to our knowledge).

what's up with LF's Braavos connection? its so subtle that i half-think grrm just had the money-dude's family be from the money-city just in very early, rough-cut worldbuilding, and never gardened that seed further. part of it is probably because its important to the narrative that LF was born so low on the Westerosi class structure because his grandfather wasn't even in the Westerosi class structure. also isn't LF associated with a braavosi ship? what/how much does that signify??
@randominternetguyoffical
@randominternetguyoffical Год назад
So at this point I think that there's not enough evidence to tie him to Bravos is any real way. Like yes he negotiated with the Iron Bank... but his fam wasn't like crazy rich or like powerful in Bravos and he doesn't overtly do anything, that I'd consider to be super "Bravossi". Like hes not a water dancer, not in contact with or a worshiper of the house of black and white, hes not a sailor, he not a fromer bravo... like he's not really very "Bravossi" He was raised in Riverun and on the Fingers and then basically as an adult hit up Gultown and Kingslanding, so like yeah he's had contact with Bravos but again idk if he;s like so in touch with the Bravossi or Iron Bank leadership that they would A, want to work with him, B know of him well enough to formulate an option.. or like C even view him as a viable option to work through or with since he's a low level lord and just a random agent of the crown and not in debt to them or tied to a potential political faction that could take over rulership. So I lean towards, him just have proximity to Bravoss in heritage and his vocation being that of master of coin, but him not being otherwise majorly attached to or associated with the iron bank or the Bravossi leadership.

As Peter in Unsound Variations points out Bunnish will never get waht he wants out of his revenge plots, revenge doesn't really have teh power to fullfil whats eat at Bunnish, its never enough. @randominternetguyoffical
@randominternetguyoffical 2 года назад
@Gany Kaliya I believe that fundamentally he's indebeting houses so he can A) wrap them up in the grain/food scheme, or B) so he has something they need and thus isn't someone they could just do away with... I think LF never inteneded to kill Lysa and thus would have had her on his side as well as the powers of debt and food over the Vale and to a greater extension over much of Westeros.. But now that he has Sansa and he has killed Lysa things are kinda in limbo and hes struggling to keep the pot from boiling over before winter hits and all that grain and debt planing can come home to roost and give him a goo stranglehold on power. As for Sweetrobin... im unconvinced hes a greenseer, not that he might not have powers but they are untrained and no fully manifested if they do exist so idk if he could even use them to seriosuly harm someone. Im also unconvinced that Sansa will be raped, GRRM said that the rape in teh show was not from his notes and that LF is obsessed with her and would not put her in danger of that sort (I was gonna talk about this int he video and show the quote but I forgot lol) but essentially I could see Harry making a bad play and being caught in a LF trap (?) or maybe Harry making a well intentioned play and being snagged in a LF trap (?)maybe he does the same thing he did with Sansa and Lysa on accident but this time with Sweeety Robin and Harry intentionally? Getting Sweetrobin to go after Harry and pretending he had nothing to do with the whole thing... Like you say lots and lots of potentials there and yes there certainly is room for a Father and Illiginmate Son battling over the same woman thing going on there. Given the Puppetman murdering his own kid cuz he saw it as a threat thing I think that LF kinslaying his son, like how Hoster kinslayed LF's unborn kid is a possibility on the table too.. There's no real way to quantify the cost of actually fixing up harrenhall. It's described as ungarrisonable and basically a ruin more so than a castle. That being said though, one of the reasons it's a white elephant is because of it's hugeness. I dont imagine this is the grand scheme or objective of Baelish, but if there's anyone in this massively economically drained Kingdom of Westeros that would be able to afford to fix up and properly rebuild and maintain Harrenhall it might be Baelish? In other words, if he plans to do so, angling for harrenhall (a potentially massive castle that is commonly seen as a prestige piece to be gifted off to upstart houses or bastards) as a low-lord with a lot of cash and debts to call on might just be a good idea anyhow.

This is a much better argument than the one wherein LF actually manages to kill Hoster Tully. Because revenge is a primary motivation for Baelish, but it is not the only one, but it is simply impractical to poison Hoster over decades.

In the books, the chapter where Littlefinger turns an essential Siege, to his benefit by driving a wedge between the Lord's of the Vail is my favorite. In my opinion it is completely little finger in a nutshell. 1 overarching plan, such as turn the Lords of the veil to his side or against one another, this is a specific plan and yet it leaves a lot of wiggle room to account for several different circumstances. Little finger didn't know for sure whether or not corbray would draw a sword on him, but he very correctly knew that he would be able to provoke him into such if corbray showed up. He also then very correctly knew that as soon as Corbray Drew Steele against him, that he could then hold the Lords of the veil responsible, for bringing the man to these peace talks, while the Lords themselves would be obliged to be much more forthcoming to what little finger would have to say, and even be somewhat apologetic, in an effort to prove that they came under a peaceful Banner with honorable intentions. I think the reason people believe Littlefinger is big on improvisation, is because that's what it looks like he's doing in the moment, but he almost always has a plan for such eventualities ahead of time, making it seem like he's ahead of the Curve. Also, the fact that little fingers plan made the most use out of the most chaotic and unpredictable of the Lords of the veil, goes back to Littlefinger always taking advantage of the chaos in the room
@randominternetguyoffical
@randominternetguyoffical 7 месяцев назад
Littlefinger reveals to sansa afterwards that all of that scene is staged. Corbrey is actually in his pocket hes miming out what they planned. He had been working with several of the lords of the Vale. Previously, so many of the players of the room were actually in his pocket as well or he had accounted for them. So I think that would be an example of far from it being a seemingly chaotic scene. It's actually a highly controlled and well manipulated scene. He's much less an agent of chaos and much more in agent of calculation and planning.

I do not even think that Harrenhall is profitable (or, if it is, then it is just barely afloat). It required two whole kingdoms, plus the Crownlands, to construct. Maintenance should be cheaper, but probably still requires a huge supply of resources, including peasants/vassals. And the Crown has specifically and intentionally removed all of these resources from the seat. As a ghost cancel, it gets by. But it can never be made a formidable power again, without conquest of the entirety of the Riverlands and probably adjacent lands.

Assuming Baelish was behind Robert's Rebellion, it could be he was initially gambling on the Targaryen throne winning against Robert and pals. He adjusted his plans and grew to desire other things he could make possible while still pursuing his original design. @@piotrx6833 So i'll try to go into some detail about that in the next video but yes I agree that I dont think killing Ned was to hurt Cat as much as it was to get a petty revenge on a existing Stark (basically using Ned as a stand in for Brandon) The fact that LF does not ever attempt to kidnap Cat and seems to not care if he hurts her by killing Bran and Ned to me point to the idea that LF had the same kind of "love" for Cat that Puppetman had for Andrea Whittman, that is to say a twisted obsession that I believe hadn't fully matured during his teen years. after the duel I feel the obsession hardened to blame and potentially hate. (hence him using her as part of his plot to seemingly destroy her family both Tully and Stark) Flash foreword to the now and I think hes transposed this wrapped and matured "love/obsession" on to Sansa . The while experiance has very clearly warpped his mind and GRRM states that LF himself switches through modes of viewing her in his own thoughts. (Thers a quote im gonn try to fit in next video about it) Tl;DR yes we have been misreading the LF x Cat "love" and that it lasted or stayed "loving" and hes transfered much of the past obsession onto his new "love" target Sansa... more or less I dont think LF planned to have Cat killed tho, but rather would have left her to her ruined fate, which he probably saw as fitting, like "thrown in with wolves and I'll leave you to em after I ruin you!" kind of thing. According to George R.R Martin "Yes, there's a lot of Gatsby in Littlefinger. Book Littlefinger, anyway. TV Littlefinger is a different sort of creature." This is interesting because Gatsby is a character driven by a lot of the same things Littlefinger is. Was a lowborn man that was infatuated with a woman in his youth, and because of his lowborn status lost the love of that woman. Both of these events to these characters go on to define the rest of his life. Littlefinger and Gatsby, both vow to become rich and powerful so they can be very far away from their lowborn status. Gatsby keeps making schemes to maybe get her back, but Littlefinger errs more towards revenge like you say. Why do you keep saying that it was Littlefinger's plan to go into the Eyrie for winter as a bastion of safety? The Eyrie is inhabitable in the winter and everybody has already moved out of it by the end of Dance. Also, if Littlefinger just wanted Harrenhal as a prestige piece to become Lord Paramount of the Trident, why was his first machination to have it awarded to Janos Slynt, a crony of his? Littlefinger would not have any holdings on the Riverlands in that situation to make him eligible to be Lord Paramount nor would be he eligible to inherit it as Slynt had sons. Him requesting Harrenhal directly was a backup plan. It could be said as well that Darry should not be considered out of range as the Lannisters like Littlefinger enough to make all their relatives who received land and their conspirators the Freys subjects to Littlefinger by giving him the title of Lord Paramount.
