Italian Topolino, Pippo and Paperino are called like that as an adaptation for Italy because they mean "little mouse" then Pippo is just a common name in Italy and "little duck". Because Italians would have preferred a more understandable version.
If the adaptations were done today I feel like we would've probably kept the original names, but at the time (which is nearly 100 years ago at this point) it would've felt very weird to have non-Italianised names for anything especially with the strong sense of nationalism that was prevalent in all of Europe from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s. Plus, the English language was definitely not widely known in Italy at all and unfortunately it kind of still isn't.

Topolino and Paperino litterally mean little mouse and little duck, the names were changed beacuse at the time in italy there were the tradition to change the names of the characters when translating
The only thing the video could perhaps refer to is what happened in 1933 - when there was a copyright issue and Topolino was replaced by an actual mouse called "Topo Lino" for a short time, and in 1942, when Disney comics were forbidden outright and a character named "Tuffolino" was made up to fill his place for a short time. That’s actually not a raccoon but very close! They’re called Racoon-dogs or Tanuki. Aside from being a real animal they’re also a yokai (if you don’t know what that is, they’re Japanese mythological creatures and spirits/ghosts) and they’re known to be able to shapeshift into pretty much anything. Depending on the myth they can be evil or good, but in modern day Japan they’re known to just be tricksters and don’t do much harm. Many depictions of the tanuki have them wearing leaves of straw hats, which is probably why the news anchor has a leaf on their head. I know this is very very nerdy but Tanukis are my favourite animal so I have to talk about them.
i just wanna point out that Mr Popo is genie who was based on the Hindu deity called Mahakala (hence him watching over the HTT/ROS&T since he's based on a deity of time). If people think that he's meant to be a black dude because he has pitch black skin and giant red lips, then that's them being racist, not Toriyama. and for those that would wanna talk about Officer Black, who most people see as Toriyama's depiction being racist as he is a black man who also has the large lips that many see as "racist", remember that Akira Toriyama was in Japan in the 80's when he wrote it, which has a 98.5% of Japanese in the population which makes it extremely unlikely that he had even seen a black man before. Even still , despite Officer Black's appearance and obvious name, he's actually depicted as a serious character, with some people stating that he's probably one of the only sane Red Ribbon officer
I think most people know that the creators didn't Intend for their characters to be racist depictions, but rather, the way their presented can be perceived as racist. Although racism aside, even for a new ip, gamefreak really went out there when they made Jynx.

Toopolino, Paperino and Pippo ARE Mickey, Donald and Goofy, just with different names, because Italy is one of those countries where fictial characters from other countries are too often renamed to fit the language. For example in Italy Spider-Man is commonly called Uomo Ragno, but the new generations and the new movies are refering to him as Spiderman, because this habit to change the names is slowly fading away, but very slowly. For example, in Animal Crossing all the names are different if you choose Italian as language.

@@GuyerTown depends on if you meant for it to be racist or not which personally i don't think the Design is Racist however as you stated even if the Design was racist Toriyama himself had no hate for black people. Mr Popo's Teeth isn't very consistent however when its drawn the way you mentioned it can look similar to Mahakala's upper teeth(its also important mentioning that Mahakala is the god of time and Popo protects the time chamber so it fits.) idk about the pokemon stuff i don't play Pokemon.

Big Bird, or as he is known here in Brazil- Garibaldo. Was only BLUE during the 60s. He went beck to Yellow during the 80s and 90s, because they just dubbed the original Sesame Street. Only in the mid to late 2000s, TV cultura started producing a newer Brazilian version of Sesame Street, and Garibaldo continued to be yellow.
In the Mickey Mouse clubhouse show he's called Topolino... And on Disney plus Mickey is still called Topolino. Either he's yapping or Disney embraced it.
I don’t think Brazil uses that version of Garibaldo anymore, but they still acknowledge him. Brazil’s current Garibaldo is literally just the same as big bird

But he's the same identical character and we have the same identical media as in the us about him and the others (except for this comic - which is still disney btw)

Topolino is VERY present in Italy, those names are just Italian adaptations to make them more approachable to an Italian audience, they’re not separate characters. It’s not like we don’t have Disney movies with them here in Italy Everybody knows Mickey
