In this video, we check out the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV. The Bolt is Chevy's front-motor, a 5-door all-electric subcompact hatchback. This EV has been on the market since 2017 but this is my first opportunity at getting behind the wheel and it didn't disappoint.
Powering the front wheels is a single, permanent magnetic drive motor powered by an advanced 66-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack made up of 288 individual cells. Your full range on the 2020 Bolt is up to 259-miles on a full charge. This is 10% more than the previous model year and 21-miles farther. Total power from the motor is 200-horsepower and 266 lb.ft. of torque delivered through an electronic precision shift system.
You get 40,000 places to plug-in throughout the country. The DC fast charge offers up to 100 miles of range for about 30 minutes of charge. A 214-volt charger offers about 25 miles per hour charged and a 120v charger gets you just 40miles for every hour of charge. You also get a limited warranty on your batter for 8-years or 100,000 miles.
Check out the full video and let us know your thoughts in the comments below. Be sure to subscribe to the channel if you're not already and as always, thanks for watching.

"When I finally parked it(Bolt) at my home charging station, it had gone 322 miles on a single charge. Not bad for a car rated at 238 miles per charge. Even more impressive was the fact that I didn't really try very hard to get that many miles out of it. I spent plenty of time in traffic, which helped, but there were a few sections that I was moving along at 65-70 mph as well. No matter how you look at it, 322 miles out of a Bolt is pretty impressive." - Ed Hellwig Edmund's

Dad Knows Best The best way to drive the Bolt especially around town is in ‘L’ mode - it is truly one pedal driving bringing the car to a complete stop while getting regen energy back into the battery. I’m in ‘L’ mode 95% of the time, increasing my range and it will allow my brakes to easily last 100K miles and beyond. I already have over 16K miles on my 2019 and expect to drive it for many more years.

@@kevinkaaz7720 Couldn't agree with you more! Except that I'm in 'L' mode 100% of the time and have already put on slightly over 20K on my 2019. Despite some minor drawbacks mentioned here, my Bolt is by far THE BEST car I've ever had. Love it and certainly intend to keep it for as long as I can.

I purchased a used 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV on Black Friday last year and got it for under $30,000 dollars. Great video!

Yup, 100% my bad. To be fair, I didn't spend a lot of time in those rear seats and they've hidden the button on me pretty well... lol thanks for the comment and the info 👍

you were driving in D mode which doesn't have the complete stop regen brakes this is when most use the paddles. if you drive in L mode it will stop completely without touching brakes. how do you not know that. No one pays sticker price. Gm is offering 8500 incentives plus most get more off. I just bought a brand new 2020 bolt for 26K which is about 14K less than the model 3. Not counting some of the tech features Tesla biggest advantage is their charging stations and speed. So if you do a lot of long distance in your EV a tesla is the best choice but a lot of people use the EV as a daily driver and they charge at home nightly. They have a second vehicle for long road trips or they just a rent a car for long trips. You can rent a lot of cars for 14K. The model 3 is a great car. If you don't care to fork over another 14K than its a really nice EV. But model 3 isn't all advantage. It rides really low to the ground so for some older folks it will be hard to get in and out of it. It can also be a pain to repair or do maint. because theres not a lot of tesla shops and not just any mechanic can work on your tesla. God forbid you have an accident because there are horror stories about people having to wait months to get their tesla out of the shop. Yes, they give you a car to drive but still months for an accident repair. The closest tesla shop to me is 2/1/2 hours away. Once out of warranty the Tesla's are very expensive to repair. Like I said the model 3 is nice so if you don't mind spending another 14K on a car its a great choice. If you are just looking for a daily driver and you don't need more than 259 miles a day than the Bolt is a great choice. Yes, you get some more tech with the tesla but you also pay for it so it really just comes down to how much money do you want to spend. They are both nice cars. Reviews like this video don't give the full picture for people looking to buy. Folks do your own research the Bolt is a lot cheaper than model 3 and it is a great car for 26K.

I bought one in early March basically because of the GM incentives. If there were no incentives this car would be a no go for me. The MSRP is basically in Tesla M3 territory. With the current incentives it is probably the best relatively inexpensive electric car. The Nissan Leaf is a competitor, but it was a no go for me because they continue to not bother with battery thermal management.

Agreed, I don't think he was aware of L mode. I only drive D mode when cruising on highways. City driving is all L mode. The only time I touch the brake pedal is when I come to a complete stop because the Bolt won't maintain the brake lights once you come to a stop without pressing the pedal. Don't want a car coming up behind me thinking I'm moving or about to move with no brake light on. With that said, the Bolt does illuminate the brake lights when you are decelerating on regen braking, but they do go off once you come to a stop without pressing the brake pedal.

In Washington, the Bolt is about $15 K cheaper then the model 3 and when you add the state 10% tax it comes out about $16.5 K cheaper. And, honestly, for 95% of the time the Bolt is fine

GM puts heavy discounts on the Bolt. You can easily pickup a Bolt base model for $26K, and a fully loaded Premier for $31K.

First of all, great video, thank you. However, the Leaf is definitely not the king anymore. At the time this video was posted, the Model 3 beat it in overall sales, the Bolt beat it in range and virtually everyone killed it in battery management. The Leaf's biggest failing is its air cooled batteries. This creates problems with battery life and attempting multiple DC fast charges on a long trip. Additionally, it uses the CHAdeMO fast charging system, which is few and far between in North America. Its range at a constant 70 mph is around 190 miles vs 220 in the Bolt and 290 in the Model 3 LR AWD. The Leaf is a better looking car (in my opinion) than the Bolt, inside and out. However, the Bolt is frequently discounted to below $30k, has over 30 miles more range, a liquid cooled battery, CCS charging and better performance. The value proposition on the Bolt is significantly higher than the Leaf. It is a nice EV, but Nissan needs to step its game up if they want to retake the crown.

How the LEAF is the king?? I am on my second LEAF now and i don't agree! Bolt now i available in many places for $25K for the LT trim. The new LEAF Plus has a usable battery about 56kWH (Nissan advertises the gross capacity while all other EV incl. Bolt adv. the usable capacity.) To me what pushes me away from LEAF is that they use CHAdeMO standard for fast charging which now is only used by Nissan. Bolt and other non Tesla EVs use CCS which became last year more common and the plugs per charging location and most importantly much faster current. Most Charging stations in the US with CHAdeMO are only 50kW max while CCS has 150 and 350kW.

By sales. The Leaf is still the #1 sold EV.

@@txGarage Well Back In January 2020 was expected Model 3 to outsell LEAF worldwide. Few days ago Tesla reported that they delivered more than projected. I guess if someone digs into the numbers it will come out LEAF is no the king anymore. I am on my second LEAF now but i am done with Nissan. Most likely Bolt will be my next lease i like now the reduced price.
