In this video review one of the Circontrol #Raption50 Rapid chargers, which is one of the newer generation of chargers used on the #ChargeplaceScotland network. In this video I’ll be looking how to activate one of these chargers using:
- Chargeplace Scotland RFID Card
- Chargeplace Scotland new App
- Contactless debit card
Now unfortunately as you will see in the video one of these three methods was unsuccessful on this occasion. In this video you see my honest review of how I got on attempting to charge , and I talk about it in the end of the video.
In summary I found the RF ID card was by far the quickest and easiest way to activate one of these charges. I found the ChargePlace Scotland app to be a pleasant surprise and was actually also very easy to use and an improvement over the old Charge Your Car app that the network used to use.
As you will see in the video demonstration unfortunately I was unable to start this charger using a contactless debit card. I have since discussed this with people I know in SWARCO and ChargePlace Scotland and I understand that this was likely due to apparently some of the newer machine locations at the time not being fully connected to allow for contactless charging.
I understand that this situation should now be hopefully resolved and I’ll be interested in the comments to hear the experiences of people who live in Scotland and how they getting on with the contactless payment and the the chargers generally.
In the video I also reviewed the location. His charger was in the community centre at Longniddry which is about 25 minutes east of Edinburgh. This was located in a residential area. As well as having a rapid charger there is also a type to 22 kW dual post as well. It was a likely useful location therefore for local residents who may not have offstreet parking as a way of refuelling their EVs. However I would say that the location was somewhat isolated and obviously care would need to be taken potentially if charging late at night on your own.
On the whole I was impressed with the newer ChargePlace Scotland SWARCO hardware and hope to see more of these being rolled out by local authorities in Scotland as some of the older rapid chargers machine are replaced and updated.

Great simple to understand video thanks. Thanks for good advice and so therefore also got the app and the rfid card and several other rfid cards so to be fully prepared for EV travels. Gridserve & IONITY at a few places also would not take my credit / debit cards…

Glad it helped. I tend to get every conceivable RFID card and keep in glove box in a wallet, also setup all main Apps and have at ready. A debit card is probably easiest and going forward all hopefully will now have, but doesn’t hurt to leave other options.

I used one of these chargers in Spain. Removing the CCS cable from the unit is difficult. I thought it was locked, it was not. You have to pull it down, not straight out.

That’s the problem, right there. A wallet full of RFID cards. It’s unheard of for Tesla owners. So pleased I never put myself through the difficulties you showed us. Even contactless payment cards are a bad idea : plug & charge is THE ONLY WAY to go.
@ThePlugSeeker
@ThePlugSeeker 2 года назад
True you don’t need a wallet of RFID cards to use the Supercharger network. But tbh Richard even if/when I get a Tesla I’d still have them anyway to give me the widest possible options of still using non Tesla chargers (as a backup to Contactless/Apps). I got my RFID cards years ago and time taken to order them was minimal, and I have them in the glovebox, no problem really to me as far as I am concerned.

Plug and Charge IS far better and Fast Ned are among now some other networks following this example. Agree one day if all networks employed this that would be even better. Easier to do when it’s just Tesla machine and Tesla car and account. Bit trickier to have it work across multiple car and charger unit types. Possibly using numberplate recognition technology is one way forward.

As a Scottish Tesla owner I have a CPS card and an Octopus Electroverse card. Tesla chargers aren't everywhere.

You did not mention about the on screen information when charging is in progress. If you turn up at a charger and say a CCS charge is in process you can press the hand 🤚icon in bottom right of screen, which should active screen, then tap the i ℹ icon in bottom right of screen, this will display the connectors. Click on the CCS and it will display how long its been on charge, what the current battery status is, how much has been consumed and also what speed it is charging at! This can also be used if Chademo is being used or whilst you are charging to get ie current speed .

If in Scotland RFID is a no brainer. Apparently you can also use WebPay rather than having a debit/credit card permanently linked to the app.

I generally like to get any RFIDs going and keep them in a wallet in the car. That being said I found the App for CPS easy to use.

@@ThePlugSeeker so turns out my account was blocked because I didn't add my payment info at registration stage. Although the app is horrendous and it didn't prompt me nor allow me to add these in. All sorted now though and was able to charge it a cps point last night. Happy days!

Local councils pay the maintenence and running costs for these, and each local council sets the price.

Tax payers in UK and EU paid for Grants and Councils provided rubbish services in some of the 32 council areas. £50 million since 2013 spent poorly and wasted in many areas. A SNP, Transport Scotland, EVA Scotland love in. This Electric A9 is a joke. Lots of central belt and to just north of Dundee funding and the rest is pretty poor.

I thought all the Scottish chargers were free to use?
@ThePlugSeeker
@ThePlugSeeker Год назад
No. As I say they were at first when the first ones went in, but now most have a fee. To be honest I think era of subsidised free rapid chargers across country has all but passed now. And I don’t think that’s unreasonable, it was there to get things started, just like Electric Highway was also once free. Now as EVs go mainstream to get good charging facilities I think we have to be ready to pay for them.

One thing you didn’t talk about was support - and I don’t understand why you didn’t contact the helpline when you had the contactless problem. I have phoned the CPS helpline a few times when there has been a fault with the charger. It is quick and easy to get through to a human being and they have, so far, always managed to fix the problem remotely. As an aside - and no disrespect to Nissan Leaf owners - but I look forward to when Chademo goes away and vendors are no longer obliged to include this legacy connector in there chargers. What happens in Japan can stay in Japan.
@ThePlugSeeker
@ThePlugSeeker 2 года назад
How did you know I didn’t ring ChargePlace Scotland ? 🤗 I was able to activate it with both. App and the RFID so I would have been fine if o had needed a charge. Although I didn’t need a charge, purpose was just to test the charger. As such the Contactless did not work, which was something I wanted to report on honest fashion. I know people in CPS, they couldn’t have started a credit card charge if that had been the only thing I had had. The work round as I said in video, would been to download app and add the debit card to that.

Well Chademo will not be going away anytime soon, given the number of Leafs and NV200 vans on the road. RU-vid is also littered with videos of people having problems charging with CCS. This could be because, unlike Chademo, there is not a worldwide universal standard for CCS, although I believe it is coming soon.

Not impressed with public chargers up on the 500. 45 min max stay??? I spent more time waiting to charge and then charging on the 500 than I did traversing the route. Never again. I'll use my diesel truck instead.

Hi there. Interested here details. Where is the 500? Which country? And what was the trip you were doing ?distance, which EV were you driving at the time. Do you have both an EV and a diesel truck?
