Thank you for this very well explained video as I will shortly be trialling my Chargeplace Scotland RFiD card on one of the local tethered fast chargers and I would have made the mistake of connecting my Fiat 500e using the type 2 lead rather than the CCS lead, exactly as you suggested.

Great video, it’s just a pity the dealer doesn’t take you through this when your taking delivery. To be honest I think there are a lot of dealers that don’t know much above the electric cars they are selling.

Thumbs up for a very informative video, ideal for beginners to get started in the EV world. I like how manufacturers are designing their rapid chargers to resemble petrol and diesel filling pumps as it gives some confidence to newbies or perhaps those who are a bit hesitant to make the switch. My first electric vehicle was in 2008 and used a standard 3-pin household plug. It wasn't until 2014 on a Nissan Leaf that I first discovered the Type 1 AC socket and the CHAdeMO DC socket with the older style button and lever connector plug. Now with Type 2 AC and CCS DC becoming the de facto standard in the UK and Europe, which I prefer for it's simplicity and ease of use. My only wish is to have all network providers accept contactless payment as standard, instead of the odd few. I have too many RFID cards, memberships and smartphone apps!
@CastleKnight7
@CastleKnight7 Год назад
Yeah, why can’t they just standardize contactless payment like petrol stations have?

For what it's worth, EVSE stands for electric vehicle SUPPLY equipment. Also, it pretty much covers anything you plug into a vehicle to charge it using the vehicle's internal charger. In essence, it's just a cable with a safety switch system designed to safely provide the correct AC voltage and current to the internal charger.

Thanks for the useful vid. Car received yesterday so needing to brush up on rapid charging know how for longer journeys 🤔. What is obvious is why are there so many diff account cards req with charging!!! . What the hell is wrong with credit card payments I wonder 😡

Hi , great news you're in a EV 👏 Yes in 2022 its crazy that we need RFID cards and apps to use public chargers , BUT this is changing , when im south in England, i use Instavolt, Gridserve, and Osprey rapids , all of whom take contactless payments, so no membership required etc. CPS ( charge place scotland) are still 'stuck in the past' with app ( very poor reliability) but there RFID card works ok ish , if the communication is ok for that charger on the day.

Thank you Jonathan. I've been a big EV fan since the Tesla S but always been well out of our price range. As we get our cars through NHS leasing scheme we had to wait until 1) They supplied them 2)the prices were more reasonable 3)our lease contract came to an end 😴! (and never the 3 shall meet) Thankfully the vast majority of our charging will be via our home charger as all commutes/family visits round-trip are all well within the cars range. It's this seldom use on long distance trip that is giving us anxiety with unfamiliarity and the plethora of variations of payment. I'm sure after a couple we'll feel like seasoned veterans but till then....😱 Thankfully for EV charging choices we are OK in the south. But very much appreciating the tips nevertheless 🙏. The yearly trips into France.... Well that's a headache for another day just atm 😫

Very good explanation of the difference between Fast Charging and CCS Rapid Charging. Should be compulsory viewing for all new EV owners! I often meet new EV owners charging on the 22kW AC at Tesco who can't understand why their car will only charge at 7kW or 11kW and they assume the charge point is faulty! Also a guy who had purchased an Audi e-tron ten days ago didn't think the CCS plug would fit his car and had always charged on AC. He was amazed when I removed the rubber bung from the bottom section of the socket on his car to reveal the CCS socket!

Yes , the main dealers REALLY NEED to get their act together, the amount of poor or NO advise on charging is terrible 😑
@mattw9764
@mattw9764 3 года назад
For AC slow charging, the EVSE is not the charger. The charger is a unit in the car. The term "charging cable" is a useful way to be both correct and vernacular.
@JonathanPorterfield
@JonathanPorterfield 3 года назад
You are correct , but this is aimed at the public who are helped with terms that ive found keeps folk interested in the process of charging an ev.

It varies, i charge at home 99% of the time, so as long as the public charger works , i don't care what the cost is, as i just want to rapid charge and be on my way.

What are your thoughts on the current crop of hybrids with CCS capabilities??????
@JonathanPorterfield
@JonathanPorterfield 3 года назад
Madness ! Plug in Hybrids should just have type 2 , 7 kw on board chargers, adding CCS to allow 25 miles ev range to a vehicle with a petrol engine , just frustrates me ,as these drivers become desperate NOT to use fossil fuel , and so stop every 25 miles to use a rapid. Get a full EV ! Rant over 🤣🤣

I am planning to by a Electric Bike, it natively support 1.2kW and 3.5kW charging with first party carryon charger, since bike has CCS connector, would I be able to charge it at these 4-wheeler charging stations? If so what would be fastest it can safely charge at? Fyi: Battery is 10.4kWh

Do all Scottish fast chargers need you to supply your own cables? I thought they all looked like the rapid charger station.
@FBAUnleashed

If I am getting a car with a maximum rapid charge rate of 100kWh and I only have 150kWh rapid chargers near my house will this still charge? Assuming it will still charge but only accept the maximum taken by the vehicle? The car has a CCS port for rapid charging.
@JonathanPorterfield
@JonathanPorterfield 2 года назад
Hi , 1st of all kWh is stored energy , kW is power. So 150kW rapids will charge at the evs maximum 100kW draw , but this will depend on battery SOC , and temperature of the pack , andvof course as you approach 80% SOC it will slow right back on the charge rate.
@barriedear5990
@barriedear5990 3 года назад
Does using the AC "hog" the charger. I thought you could use AC and one DC at the same time, parking space permitting.
@JonathanPorterfield
@JonathanPorterfield 3 года назад
Yes you can , but plugging AC into most evs ( except the early zoe ) means the 43kw avaible , ( to all evs AND plug in hybrids ) will only 'draw ' from the rapid 3 or 7 kws , some pull 11kws . This means a very slow charge rate , hence the term 'hogging' the rapid, especially when a nearby 'fast ' charger will offer the same rate of charge.

Are electric vehicles more expensive then petrol if you cant have a home charger installed please help
@JonathanPorterfield
@JonathanPorterfield 3 месяца назад
It depends on what price you pay for electricity at a public charger ,it can be as low as 20p a unit or 90p a unit ( 1 kWh ) , then you can drive a petrol car that returns 50mpg or one that does 15mpg ! Taking my Kia e niro or Renault zoe , both on average return 4.5 miles per 1 kWh of electric , so every 20p spent on a public charger will take you 4.5 miles , or 90p ! Choices, its all about Choices, and unlike petrol / diesel , you can look around for the best electricity prices on public chargers. But charging at home on a cheap overnight tariff (i pay 9p a unit) is the best way to save £1000's in 'fuel' costs over a fossil fueled vehicle.

@@JonathanPorterfield I'm private rented and it's looking like landlord isn't giving permission to have one installed I'm getting Mégane etech techno 60 kWh, end of June and currently driving Audi q2 1.0 , cheapest rapid chargers in my area are around 65p kw , average is 85p , my q2 returns about 38 mpg I think ?

Pretty easy level 3 fast charging, Not so much in the usa. In the us you have first find a charger that works or is not broken down then put an app that is outdated and buggy on your phone then pray to the ev charging gods then plug in your CCS opps I have a chadmeo that isn't supported at this station and have drive another hour to find another broken down charging station that has chademo then pray to the ev charging gods a few more times uh oh now the charger wont talk to your car please reconnect and try again then that fails and you have to find a hidden phone number in your app that keeps crashing to call a live person to activate uh oh that charger is out of service and rep tells you to try the one you were just at that only has a ccs and you have chademo to late your out of power and just call for a tow

Keep that charge between 20 and 80% for most days unless you really need more. Keep that sweet spot for a long battery life. Yes you can go above and below on trips if necessary but for daily driving most people do not need to. People need to get away from the petrol "FILL UP" mentality. Topping off to 100% is not good for the battery. Sitting at 100% for hours, days or weeks is not good for battery longevity.

This man is talking out of his hat the first 2 where ok but the 3rd charge he plug into was not a fast charge it was a 22 or 48 kw ac charger but you can only charge at the speed of the car on board charge so on the hyundia ioniq it 7.4kw so it not fast charging . Fast charging is dc to dc charging . I wish people understood there systems before making films. Ccs is fast charge you just created a whole new segment of charging It's only rapid charging if its above 150kw Which your car cannot accept your car can only do 50kw dc.
