If you're driving an electric vehicle to Scotland on holiday or business, it is highly recommended to register in advance for a ChargePlace Scotland account and RFID card, and download their app, to give you access to the majority of charge points across Scotland. However, ChargePlace Scotland also has a little-advertised feature called WebPay, that lets you start and stop charging sessions using a browser on your phone. All you need is a credit or debit card for payment.
This is a quick guide on how to use WebPay with a ChargePlace Scotland charge point.

Hi, we are on vacation in Scotland right now. We were given an upgrade to electric car and the rental company didn’t explain how charging works . We have no issues during our first 5 days in Lake District and Edinburgh as the payment can be made easily by contactless credit card. But on the way to the highlands we stopover at Inverness and realized many EV chargers along the way couldn’t accept our contactless credit card as they required payment by RFID. We called our car rental company and asked for a replacement petrol car which was not available. We almost abort our trips to Isle of Skye and Isle of Mull until we googled and found your life saving video on how to make payment vids webpay. Many ev charging stations are not working. We really appreciate your video. Thank you so so much!!

We're on vacation in Scotland right now, and are having a hell of a time. The airline lost our luggage, and so we were late to rental car place. They gave away our rental and gave us an electric. They didn't explain how charging works. We're way up in the highlands by the time we learn you need a special card to access the chargers. Anyway, your video was a lifesaver and may have salvaged our entire vacation. Thank you.

No problem, and sorry to hear about the trouble you'd had! Even although the Web Pay feature is mentioned on ChargePlace Scotland's homepage, they really don't advertise it enough, especially to tourists. The arrival of more private sector charging networks across Scotland is making charging considerably easier, since all new rapid chargers from the likes of InstaVolt, Gridserve, Osprey, FOR:EV etc have contactless credit card readers now.

A really useful video, thank you. I wish I'd known this a year ago as I had to wait months for my CPS RFID card.

Thanks for the video it really helped me out. We are driving to Scotland from Ireland later this year and I did wonder if the Chargers we plan to stop at in Dumfries (Brooms Road, coach and lorry park) Charge place Scotland Chargers, could take straight forward contactless tap using debit card, but at least I know I can use this payment method. Thank you!

Happy to have found this video! We will be on a 10-days tour of north-east Scotland at the end of June with a rental EV - coming with our own EV all the way from Italy 🇮🇹 was just impossible -, and we have realised that the providers we use in Italy have very little interoperability in Scotland (actually zero out of the major cities). We then discovered ChargePlace Scotland and the zillion charge points of his network, but were just wondering how functional and practical the CPS webpay interface was... and now we know! Thanks! 👍

How was the trip? We e going to Schotland as well and I'm not sure if we're going to need an RFID badge, or if the ChargePlace website will suffice

@@Darth_Mauw Hi! The trip went extremely well, some 550 miles / 900 km in 7 days with a Renault Zoe rented and returned in Edinburgh (we own a Zoe at home here in Italy) for an absolutely delightful holiday ❤... even if with some initial thrills. In fact, our plan was to exploit the time spent visiting places to charge the car in AC, even at just 7 kWh. The tough reality was that we NEVER EVER managed to activate with the webpay interface any CPS AC recharging points anywhere we tried (Anstruther, St. Andrews, Inverness...), with the CPS customer service resulting totally useless in finding a solution. Luckily we discovered (the CPS customer service never suggested it!) that the CPS DC 50 kW ones DO WORK with the webpay interface, so we recharged in St. Andrews (Parking lot, 30 Links Cres, St Andrews KY16 9HR, UK) at 15 p/kWh (🎉) and in Aberdeen (Frederick Street Car Park, Frederick St, Aberdeen AB24 5HY, UK) at 43 p/kWh (😊). Then in Inverness we decided to abandon the unaffordable CPS and, just by searching in Google Maps, successfully charged at a BP Pulse HPC 300 kW (BP Longman SF Connect, 22-24, Longman Rd, Inverness IV1 1RY, UK) at 79 p/kWh (🙄) with credit card and at an Osprey DC 75 kW at 79 p/kWh (🤨) with my own Renault Mobilize Pass RFID card. Last recharge in Pitlochry at another Osprey DC 50 kW (1 General Wade's Military Rd, Pitlochry PH9 0LG, UK) at 79 p/kWh (😣) again with my own Renault Mobilize Pass RFID card. Talking about RFID cards, CPS only issues it to UK residents with a UK bank account, so forget it. At the BP Pulse charger none of the 4 RFID cards I use in Italy was recognised and had to go with credit card, while at the two Osprey chargers the Renault Mobilize Pass one luckily did work. I don't know which RFID cards you use normally, but be prepared to some disappointments. I never investigated the possibility of buying some local operator's RFID card. Wishing you a superpleasant trip in the wonderful Scotland!

Nice to see that this is actually working. We are planning a trip to Scotland and charging an EV is for some reasons more complex then in any other country in Europe. Are there a lot of charging points where you can also just use a contactless credit or debit card?

Hey - planning a holiday in Scotland this summer so really good info 😁... do you know if this applies to all charging stations in Scotland?

You can also initiate charges using other e-Swarco operating network Apps , for instance BeEV ( Gtr Manchester) will initiate charges ( I sneaked across the border to check for them! ) but bizzarely their RFID wouldn't/ CP Scotland RFID holders can also use e-Swarco operating networks south like BeEV using their RFID. Personally I also invested in a CPS RFID account as using an app or Web link as you are at the mercy of a working phone signal and there are older chargepoints that are still not linked to CPS's new network operator.

I did all this last year, couldn't get it to work. Phoned them up and when I eventually got through they told me that the RFID reader can also read contactless credit/debit cards.

worth noting that if your are heading to scotland that it is worth getting the rfid card as sometimes theres no mobile signal to access this web page - good video otherwise

Of course you cannot download the app AT ALL outside the UK. Leaving it useless. The web may or may not be available due to bad mobile coverage.

Would make sense if the website was able to accept gpay too.

I think the App process has changed a little. The numbers on the chargers now seem to be known on the app.

Alas that'll be down to the individual owners of the chargers on the ChargePlace Scotland network. The chargers are owned by local Councils and businesses, and it'll be up to them to retrofit contactless credit card readers or replace the chargers with new ones that have readers built in. New UK-wide charging regulations that state that rapid chargers need to have contactless credit card readers will give those Councils and businesses the hurry-up they need to do this.

@@PlugLifeTelevision I recently encountered a couple trying to charge their Leaf at a site in Warrington. They looked upset so I offered to help. The problem was that they didn't have enough cash in their account to cover the £40 pre-authorisation, so couldn't charge. No credit card either.. So contactless is fine for most but not everyone, unless they scrap the authorisation requirement by law. I guess people like me need to remember that!
