Step by Step Guide To Charging A Car Battery.
With more of us in Lockdown, & cars standing for long periods unused, the batteries are running low and even totally flat.
Here is a great easy solution to keeping the battery topped up.
Using a battery charger maintainer will allow to leave the vehicle to be left sometimes for months unused, yet the battery is always fully charged.
A great solution for classic cars, Motor Homes, Camper vans Kit cars, & Elderly drivers who rarely use their car.

Morning Fella. Great video as always. I use the CTEK MXS 7 for the L200 & leave it on it permanently to condition the battery, as I've wired it in under the bonnet. I've also got the CTEK MXS 5 for the other vehicles. Great bits of kit. Stay safe en well. Alan L200

Good timing with this, there are going to be a lot of flat batteries in a couple of weeks. Tip - if you’ve got a driveway with power nearby., park the car facing towards the power source you can charge up without people seeing you bonnet isn’t fully closed. I use a charger I bought from Lidl, it’s pretty advanced and cost about £15.

Sounds a bargain, the only problem, lidl is like Aldi and they don't stock the same stuff all the time, you have to buy it when you see it or next time you go its gone😂😂 I do like the Man Isle as I call it, with all the tools, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Hi! Friends have been having loads of problems with cars with flat batteries, and I've found that a lot of modern chargers won't charge batteries that are completely flat. Apparently this is to do with the sophisticated sensors in them (?) I found the way round this was to link them to another battery (as you would to jump start, leave it for an hour and then there is enough charge in the battery for the charger to detect it and do it's stuff.
@aaanton11
@aaanton11 4 года назад
That is great information Peter, the charger I used is able to bring dead batteries back, as are most modern smart chargers like in the links in the description, it can take a couple of hours for the charger to de-sulphate the battery and get the juices flowing again, Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠

I have zero car knowledge but wouldn't it be easier to get a jumper starter kit? they are probably cheaper than an actual battery and allow you to not only jump start your car but you can use them as a torch and charge USB devices...?

Good advice for people who have a vehicle which is not in regular use. However if a car is used say once week for maybe only a few miles, the battery should not go flat. If it does, the battery may need replacement, but check the charging system first. I had a car which only went out once a week for about a 5 mile trip, and the battery was fine. After 7 years from new, the battery started going flat. I charged it, and drove straight to a car store where I bought a new battery. The old battery had a 5 year guarantee, so 7 years was good.

@aaanton11
@aaanton11 4 года назад
I am not aware of a chime, might be wrong but I thought it was just a flashing bottom bar on the dash panel when the fuel was low? I stand corrected you get a single chime when the ignition is turned on when the level is low, I will look into this 👍🏻Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@leseriath
@leseriath 4 года назад
@@aaanton11 thanks for your response pal👍 I'll explain the way the chime was on the low fuel scenario, when the last bar of fuel is reached it chimed 3 times, then everytime the cars ignition was turned off then on again the fuel would chime 3 times again until fuel topped up, but it now does not chime at this point at all, now here is a possible cause I will have to address the seatbelt chime is disabled and may possibly cause the fuel chime to be disabled also! I will enable that again and wait to low fuel to see has the chime for that come back🤞

Thanks for this really useful video. I've just bought one, waiting for it to arrive. I see you didn't disconnect the cables on the battery terminal posts, so I understand it isn't necessary. You connected the negative crocodile first and then the positive. Does the order matter? And when disconnecting, should it be in a particular order ? Thanks

Excellent. I have a Ring RSC804 smart charger. I also have an old Subaru which is off the road in the summer. I found this weekend that it will not start. The battery is showing 11.8 volts but the smart charger will not recognise it, even at 11.8 volts. I thought that smart chargers would recognise anything over 10.5 volts. The charger itself works well on my stop-start Citroen battery but that one has enough charge in it to start the vehicle. Can anyone on here tell me why the Ring in not recognising what is a simple lead acid battery, please. I bought the charger specifically to top up the Subaru battery whilst it is off road. But it won't do it.

@@aaanton11 many thanks for your reply. I am hoping that this following comment might help some people on here. After I had posted my comment, I looked through all the other comments on your video and found a reply by you which I thought i would try. The Ring instructions are, with the battery in the car, to connect to positive ad then to an earth on the engine. I checked that the earth had continuity and it did. But looking at what you said, I took the battery out of the car and connected the charger to the terminals direct. And it worked. The charger has now recognised the battery. Voltage has gone up from 11.8 to 12.8 already. I looked at lots of forums and videos before yours but never found an answer until now. So very many thanks. You have probably saved me a lot of trouble and money
@aaanton11

with a smart charger I would always connect directly to the battery terminals when the battery is fitted to the car, if boost starting with a big booster then I would go battery positive and engine / body earth, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Pretty rough video to be honest. No details of the actual charger, throwing everything in that boot & you're not even meant to charge direct to battery on BMW. You should be charging through posts under the bonnet, as this protects all that circuitry on the battery, & also enables the IBS to monitor the charge.

The posts under the Bonnet are for jump starting, there is no issue using a battery maintainer fitted directly to the battery Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
