It's so so so hard to explain this so simply to people, but you nailed it! It's such an easy problem to have, especially when people get upgrade after upgrade, by different installers. You're one of the few installers that will take the time to go back to bare bones and do it right. Legendary!

Appreciate it Paul. I think once I get over about 50 inquiries on a certain problem I like to do these videos to make it easier for me to just tell people to watch the video so they can understand it better. I was just thinking before I used to have a whiteboard at home I used for a few videos a while back I might pull that out again and do some live diagrams to make it even easier to understand.

Hi Matt, great video. It would be great to see a video of the do's/dont's of charging a battery located in the vehicles rear/canopy etc whilst charging a battery in a caravan simultaneously. I'm starting to see quite a few incorrectly wired in some very interesting ways! Keep up the great content, cheers Andy

I like it I will keep that in mind if I get time on one of the jobs. Thanks

@@extremeacc101 I agree with 12v obsession. Many Utes today have alu tray and canopy set ups running lithium in the canopy and running a lithium in a caravan or in my case a camper trailer. Would love to see some correct ways inc dcdc and solar arrangements with this in mind. 🙏✌️

Cheers mate, I’ll have to get my white board out next time and do some live drawing of circuits.

Hi Matt awesome , I have JJOB on order the 2022 model comes with the Projecta pm 335J and I also have 2 x 280 lithium on order from Paul should I order the optional dc/dc charger , I have a similar set up to the 200 with the Redarc 25 but was under the impression that my rear Anderson was only going to provide power to the second dc/dc charger,but after watching the video I now know what to tell my auto elec thanks

Before you order, not after, speak to Matt. We have used him and would not even buy a van without consulting him.

That’s right if you draw the schematic out it will make more sense. I do suggest you do so feel free to take a photo and send it to me.

Great video! What if the vehicle has a smart alternator can you still wire direct to 3 way fridge via an isolator or will it not supply enough power?

Thanks for that, you are very informative. I am struggling (in Sydney) with some of the same problem, though no 3 way fridge, all 12v (240v). I want to be able to charge both car and Caravan batteries and use the car batteries to supplement the van power when off grid for longer periods. In my Car (LC200) I have the DCS dual Li battery 260Ah LC200 system and in the van as of Friday Powerpaul Dual Li's 280AH Scouts with Virtron Inverter, Shunt and MPPT for the solar. Plugging into the cars Anderson and hardly anything comes thru, it is connected to the existing Caravan Management system which needs to be changed. The resolution (so far) is to add a DC-DC Charger in the van. The DCS has a Victron Smart Battery Protect SBP-65A which states to connect to it with a max of 65A output. I had hoped to get 100A or as close to the van and not sure whether this is possible, was also looking at a 200A Alternator upgrade. Maybe this is asking too much, or will not work, or there are other options. Wondering whether I should just go with something like a 50 Victron Onion DC-DC and increase the wiring to the van and into the Onion. Luv' your view.

Great video Matt. Would you recommend isolated or non isolated Victron DCDC for caravan setup. Have the BMPro 35 HA but not sure it's up to task of charging Lithium (upgrading from AGM). Shame you're in SA. I'd be calling on you if I was local. Cheers
@extremeacc101

Both will work. You dont need galvanic isolation, (marine) so go non isolated.

When/ if we get a new van I’ll be getting in touch for some off grid upgrades and vehicle set ups. Have you/ do you deal with caravan manufactures during the manufacturing process to avoid re wiring stuff like solar, inverter, battery, car setups?

Hey mate I have a brand new van with lithium so I run a anderson plug from start battery to my tow hitch and it doesn't seam to charge my van whilst driving ?? Can you help please

Great explanation. I have exactly the same set up and was wondering if wired to the starter would be better... its obviously a must. Now reference the how... I would think I should be running the 6B&S Anderson cable through an ignition relay near the start battery.. correct?

Yes, exactly

Why not get rid of the redarc thats in the engine bay and just hook up a isolator of your chosing to that 2nd battery. There is no need for a dc charger when the battery is so close to the alternator.
@extremeacc101
@extremeacc101 2 года назад
This Dc charger was existing. Even if that was out of the equation it’s still not a good idea to pull such high amps from an auxiliary battery while trying to charge. If that were the case you will notice a voltage drop on that battery when you put a load on it especially a three-way fridge some 8m away. 👍
