"that's why we lift weights everyday 🤷🏾♂️" that's big 90's reaction to a player talking about bodying your star PG. These dudes wasn't sensitive at all, such a great era of basketball
Big Dog Carr was such a badass, one of the more underrated PF's of the 90';s! Despite having both the skill and ability to be a star, he usually was on a team with at least one other star scoring big, hell he was even forced to be sixth man sometimes. At the end of his career he was a key piece to that Jazz team's success in the late 90's
I think the 90s into the start of the 2000s was the peak. You still had the physicality from the 80s, and the athleticism that picked up in that decade just continued to rise. You had true, household names, the biggest sports figures in the world. The NBA was theater then. Maybe that’s my nostalgia talking, but I’m not so sure.
Charles Barkley, though the emotions got the best out of him at times and I agree sometimes John Stockton was setting illegal picks, he had great respect for him. After the series in 1997 were over between the jazz and rockets, Barkley himself said that John Stockton "is one out of 5 best players he has played against".
Gary Payton called Stockton the best point guard ever, Not the flair and the size of Magic, that's for sure, but in terms of production and consistency for his team on both sides of the ball GP's statement is surely uncontroversial. Added also Stock is one of the physically and mentally toughest guys he ever matched up against. MJ included.
Yeah man, John Stockton was super dirty. Many called him out for it and he acted like he didn't know what they were talking about. But he was also tough as nails.
Still, never won the championship. And he was a part of a team that won the conference twice, and won the division 5 times during his tenure. So it's not like he was all by himself and didn't have a supporting cast. He was a very good player, and most people see him as that. He certainly wasn't underrated.
Imagine being a 6'1 pg in an era dominated by bigs and being the guy targeted by the best player on each team just to maybe injure you to get the upper hand... Stockton was one of the best point guards of all time. Toughest player ever. Unbreakable records till this day, this guy was the exact opposite of MJ. You dont have to be flashy to be the greatest. One of the best point guards of all times.
Little things like this like this are what make Stockton the greatest point guard ever. It is much easier to draw an illegal screen or charging foul when you're one of the smallest on the court and so many little guys in the league today don't take advantage of that fact because they can't or are unwilling to put their body on the line the way Stockton did. This is honestly understandable since with the amount of injuries seen in todays NBA, a players body/physical well-being is oftentimes the most important thing to them as well as their team and it simply isn't worth the injury risk. That's probably true and seems to be a collective way of thinking in the modern basketball era but is also why we most likely won't see another player like John Stockton ever again. Don't get me wrong we will see and arguably have seen better passers than Stockton. I believe that is up for discussion but as far as the best pure point guard ever John Stockton embodies the definition. Built like a science teacher at a modest 6'1 and 170 pounds he was able to play with the physicality demonstrated in this video for over 1500 games while remaining practically injury free. That is what sets him apart from every other point guard that has ever played the game
There are no better passers than Stockton. That is the whole point of being number 1 in assists. More flashy, yes, but not better at passing. Flashy doesn't get you number 1. The best 3 passers of all time, as of right now, are Stockton, Kidd, and Paul, in that order.
I’m kind of surprised by how hard he’s hitting Stockton.. it’s not like he was even running into Chuck.. just kept getting into place and bracing himself, really. Took those shots from a bigger guy no problem.
@@silewis9396 oh for sure they still do, but back then Utah's offense was Stockon to Malone off those pick and rolls, and in a 7 game series I could see anyone getting frustrated about it.
Not missing a single game in 17 seasons means he thought Charles was soft? 😂 What a reach, it's not like charles was pummeling him into the ground so he won't get up nor is it like he played all 17 seasons with Barkley so how do you jump to that conclusion professor? Most players won't miss if another player fouls on them, does that mean they think they're soft too? 🤔
all the comments about "this is real basketball", he is barreling into a legal screen, racking up fouls and costing him time on the court to actually play basketball.
This was when basketball was a game for growm men. It was physical and gritty, and guys like Jordan learned really quick you had to lift weights and get strong. I wonder what guys like Mailman and Charles would have done to a skinny guy like Curry dancing in their faces after scoring?
At 6'3 Jeff Hornacek was always considered a small guy as well.... look at the 2:56 mark and it's crazy to see that he's almost as tall as Chuck.... amazing what Barkley could do at his size
I Said that on some other video and a bunch of fools chimed in that he was 6'6....I told them to watch the vid of Kenny Smith who knows Chuck well talk about Barkleys height...
Scrolling thru the comments but none ever mentioned that within the NBA players’circle, Stockton was regarded as a dirty player. Barkley going after John is just him repping, retaliating on behalf the players in general.
That's shows the craft JohnStockton had....he played the game flawlessly, and one of the things that separated himself from the rest was that he was most of the time the smartest player in the court. He played the crowd, the refs, the moment like only a few could, and during this time 97 or 98 I suppose he was at the peak of his powers. Charles, who was one of the most talented and best players of his generation just fell like a rookie in the trap.
@@justthisguy1948 for me getting to the finals was the peak of his powers. About Chuck you're right he was not the version of himself for Rockets, but still Stockton got him hear with his brain not with his body
Of the 6 Bulls teams of the 90's that won Championships, those '97 and '98 Jazz teams were the toughest opponents in the Finals. They were sharp as tacks, tough as nails, and then ran the pick and roll offense to perfection.
@@bonusbaby801 - I grew up in Chicago as a Bulls fan, and you're 100% right. The Jazz were tough as nails. Stockton is easily one of the most underrated players of all time.
As a Rockets fan who hated both teams, my friends and I all thought Utah in the 98 finals - refs seemed to be trying to give it to the Bulls. MJ was always treated differently once he became the undisputed face of the league.
If players were openly trying to hurt each other today, it would be nothing but “thug this and thug that” from the people on the internet who do nothing but complain. Cant win.
@@jaredgrube6320 I didn't say anything about throwing punches you still see that today btw, but like it's said in the video "You want to bang? We bang. That's why we lift weights" Physicality, Dominance, Toughness that's what I want. Clearly nobody wants people being unprofessional you get emotional put it into your game.
Chuck was a totally different person on the court than off. Most people are used to seeing him be a goof on TNT, but on the court he was a fierce competitor. One of my favorite Rockets, even though he was only on the team for about 4 years. Funny thing is, before he came to Houston, I hated him. Wish he could have won a championship. But,, I got more respect for Chuck with 0 rings, than LeBron with his 4*
Stockton is probably one of the absolute toughest players in NBA history. So Charles was never gonna break him. He only missed 22 games during his 19 year NBA career.
gtgargon LMAO That’s the new players mentality… cry to the refs. This is part of the NBA Lebron legAcy. When u play street ball there’s no refs to cry to buddy.
Perhaps Stockton's greatest asset was his physical toughness. I can barely conceive of anyone his size being slammed and elbowed by someone of BarKley's strength and shrugging it off like it was nothing. Stockton took that kind of punishment his whole NBA career. Chris Webber committed the hardest foul he could and Stockton leaped up and slapped his butt and said "Good foul." Webber later said, "Can you imagine how disheartening that was?" :))
Stockton is an All Time Great . . . and also All Time Great Dirty Player! What makes puts him on the Dirty Players list isn't the grabbing, nor underhanded locks. It's that he retained the "good guy image" while doing all these screen and guard shenanigans and never ("NEVER"?) getting called for it.
Half the league were dirty players! If u weren’t a dirty player, couldn’t take a hard foul or willing to fight… u were called SOFT! 😂 Stockton might have got away with sneaky calls but that doesn’t make him dirty. I’d say smart in those times.
@@verdes25 I agree with you . . . just pointing out he was marketed with a "squeaky clean" image, but those other camera angles always caught him grabbing jerseys, shorts, forearms. Genius? Sure. Dirty? FOR Sure!
@@verdes25 right but there's also a big difference between dirty and just plain physical. It's like someone hitting you in the chest for a rebound vs elbowing you in the nuts when the refs can't see
@@earlyreed357 I remember being a kid when that happened. I was so hyped for my family down there because they finally had a pro team other than the Titans to cheer for
stockton comes to set a pick and Barkley moves INTO HIM with a forearm and Stockton is dirty? Barkley didn't even follow the man he was guarding, he went after Stockton and its Stockton that's dirty? Do you know what dirty means?
@@quikdeath100 yep watched him play all the time - tough as hell and pissed of a lot of players because he wouldn't give you anything. He flat out embarrassed players that could only say he was dirty to save face. Several players have commented on that including Gary Payton.
Yeah, that's what the other players understand, it takes skill and intelligence to set up those screens and not be seen as foul by the refs. Those complaining are those who does the same but do not know how to disguise or hide it and gets called on them by the referees.
I'll never forget Charles Barkley leaving Stockton open to hit a game winning 3 pointer in have 7 to send the Jazz to the NBA finals to face the bulls.😢
This was peak Jazz fandom for me. Love it! Stockton was so smart - going in deep water, pissing off the sharks, but living to tell the tale! Big Dog Carr with a great quote here, too!
Are you seriously talking about moving picks? Every team sets moving picks. You just hate the Jazz. Scottie Pippen carried every time he dribbled. Barkley spit on a fan. Stop with your bs.
this is why people hated playing Stockton, he would do some cheap things that the refs don't see and then when the opposition react he gets easy fouls called but he would never react to them just get up and play ball. He had Chuck trying to kill him 😂 like Gary Payton said just leave that man alone
Any one of those Barkley shoulders that Stockton took would've sent LeBron flopping into another timeline. Dude would have to find his way out of the multiverse to finish the game.
Stockton only missed 22 games in 19 seasons that he played in the nba. He's the last person you want to be physical with as he is tough as nails. He'll walk out of it as if nothing happened.
Funny when people say Stockton is overrated and his success is only because of Malone. Logic doesn't make sense, for example, steals is mainly an individual skill....., in addition, his mental toughness and self discipline (prioritizing passing over self points) is on the level of greats such as the GOAT himself, this is what makes up for his lack of born athleticism. Also, his 'Dirty' is actually 'Clean' in a sense, it shows his intelligence in using the rules at that time in his advantage, unlike Laimbeer, Bowen who is trying to end careers. there is a reason Legends/top players specially PGs from different era/teams (MJ, Magic, IT, GP, kidd, kerr, webber, Charles himself etc.) had such high respect and wanted him on their team. Imagine if 90s formed todays super teams.....Stockton pull in his family mini, opens the door and MJ, Hakeem, Charles (84 draft) come out ready to ball.......
When Charles said Draymond Green talks to the refs too much, it only proves he has a bad memory. He was the same exact way. But Charles was like Draymond Green + Luca Doncic in one. Yes, that is high praise, but also true.
Going up against huge guys that were usually at least a foot taller than him.. and he set those screens anyway, just to help Malone or anyone else on the team get to that basket. When you think about how long he played and that he played almost every game.. that's a lot of hits. He's such a badass.
They were all fouls against Barkley but the last one. Barkley stopped and Stockton was initiating the contact more. Good calls all the way. Different era. I miss watching basketball. 3point contests arent interesting.
If you want to separate someone's shoulder... Stockton ain't the one. Guys as tough as anyone in the league and the all time NBA leader in steals in assists which is unreal!
@@Fettclone1 When u are in Barkley's shoes and having a big mouth, popularity and a presence - lots of haters are gonna come and provoke you. Unlike others who didnt mingle with "mortals", charles would go out and hang with ordinary people and ofc many ordinary people will like to take a shot at him. So probably that guy deserved that throwing for saying shit.
