Shaq’s main skill later in his career was being enormous, and jack-hammering his ponderous mass into the key for an easy 2. He was relatively thin here and couldn’t do that. Barkley was a great player, but he wouldn’t have been able to guard, for instance, Olajuwon that way. He would have been completely cooked.
The Rock is apparently 6'5 (as it claims), but Barkley was several inches taller than the Rock when they stood next to each other in 2013. I don't think the Rock is 6'5, but Barkley did look at least 6'6.
I remember watching this live on tv. The essence of competition in my opinion. Charles and Rodman just never back down. Imagine Shaq looking this athletic and still dominant in size and strength.
I used to go to the games. My dad had season tickets in the 90s and I remember this game. The gorilla was awesome. I miss this era of basketball and no cellphones
Will always love Chuck for motivating my '94-95 Rockets when we were down 3-1 to the Suns: "No teams is beating us 3 straight with us having 2 games at home."
They were a good fight when playing, but Shaq can't hold a damn candle when it comes to actually being entertaining. Chuck's got personality and jokes for miles. Shaq's got.. thin-skinnned bitterness and um.. I'll get back to you tomorrow for the rest of that thought.
Shaq’s size and power at that age is crazy but Chuck’s skills, determination and the fact that he’s so small in comparison but going after every loose ball and rebound is inspiring. Really wish Shaq’s mama would smack his head and tell him to give Chuck his flowers on TV sometimes too instead of just calling him a bum
Barkley, easily best ever PF under 6'6". Top 5 any size. My favorite Barkley quote when ask about Rodman. Can't score, can't guard anyone and I'll show you tonight. If I remember correctly Chuck put 40 and 20 on Rodman that night.
7'+ wingspan and 39" vertical, Charles has far more reach than most players. Height doesn't matter when you can out reach, out jump, out bump most players.
This is proof of how strong Barkley was. Putting a guard against a huge center in Shaq and chuck winning the match up. Today's players keep flexing but can't even do what chuck does. Worst is that the self proclaimed goat keeps flopping even though he is bigger and better built than chuck...
For some context though you have to remember this is Shaq's rookie year and in 93 Chuck has been in the league for 10 years and his first year in Phoenix and he took them to the finals ultimately losing to the hot first 3peat Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan.
Amazing how many videos there are titled Barkley vs Shaq, Barkley vs Robinson, Barkley vs Duncan.... and he was 6'6. Crazy!! Oh and he will also literally fight anyone. Legend
This was the era when players competed against each other and didn’t join each other, I have great respect for players like Barkley, Malone, Kemp, Ewing, Webber, Hill, Stockton, Wilkins and other stars who may not have gotten a championship but still had a HOF career, these so called stars of today’s game, well I guess you could say that they are entertaining 😉
I believe today's players on average*** are better, more athletic, and certainly better shooters. But they are also all mentally weak divas so it still looks lame to fans of tough basketball like seen here. But those greats listed could still smoke today's fragile stars
Dang, Barkley was so strong, able to move Shaq around and able to take the contact from Shaq without falling...unlike 2000s n beyond...flopping all over the place
We all need to see clips like this of Barkley because now that he says a lot of silly things in a serious manner it reminds us that he as a great basketball player. He showed Shaq that he was just as big as Shaq but just shorter.
Prime Barkley was second only to Jordan. I remember the 92 Dream team where he dominated and the 93 season where he took a mediocre (but exciting) Suns to the finals.
The 93 Suns were one of the most fun teams to watch in my memory and Sir Charles was unstoppable. It's a shame they lost the finals to MJ's Bulls, that team deserved a championship. It was one of the most entertaining finals ever Charles vs MJ.
I watched this game as it happened. Charles outplayed and outthought Shaq and used headfakes and posting up inside to force Shaq to foul or lose position. Shaq pulled that backboard down and that was impressive but Charles took him out of the game early with those fouls. Also someone said Charles was 6 foot 6 inches and though some listings say he's that tall he was only 6'4 which made him going up against a 7'2 monster even more impressive. Shaq learned a lot during this game though and stopped committing and going airborne later on. He used his size and positioned better too later on. He gained some more muscle in the next couple of years and was quite accomplished by then. Having Kobe didn't hurt either.
@@drk.i.a.2969 You need to remember Charles was one of the best at intimidating referees too. He'd tell them hey ref you gonna call any fouls today etc... There's a good video that talks about Barkley doing stuff like that but when I watched this game he did those head fakes and Shaq fell for it every time. Those two or three fouls called on them were in your words bs but Charles knew if he got Shaq airborne, he only needed to be under him and he'd get those calls. Kinda genius when you think about a guy who was legit 6'4" going head to head on both ends of the court with a 7'2" powerhouse.
@@jamesratliff1803 Look at Barkley standing next to MJ in the 92 Finals or at the all-star game, more or less same height. Watch an older Barkley play 1v1 vs 6'4 Wade, Barkley's clearly taller. Also, Shaq may be 7ft or 7ft 1/2" because older Wilt had about a half inch on Shaq. I think Wilt was a legit 7'1.
Love shaq, but barkley was my favourite as a kid! I used to try and play like him and copy his moves. He could pretty much play any position, was so physically strong, hustled like crazy, and could anticipate where the ball was going before it got there! Such an inspiration!
Charles may be the lovable clown to the younger generation, but make no mistake: He was an absolute freak of nature; he wasn't even 6'5", and going after it against Shaq.
He was 6'6", he slouches a lot but when you see him standing straight next to other players you can see quote obviously that the 6'4" myth was just that.
Like I said, it’s an oft repeated myth. I have a book on the 92 dream team which says the same thing. You just have to see Barkley next to other people to know it’s bogus. He’s got a good 3-4 inches on Kenny Smith and he towers over the Rock (who’s an easy 6’3”).
Interesting that after Shaq messed up the goal they replaced it with an older 70s/80s style of structure. Near the end you can see the 2 different types of goals at each end. The 90s type at 5:00 and the 70s/80s type at 3:45
Money also played a factor he played better with the magics because he had something to prove to get a big salary. Then signed a big contract with lakers. Good example Jordan Poole.
Barkley can match Oneal for rebounding but because he is much shorter he has a big speed, mobility and agility advantage when Shaq tries to guard him away from the basket.
I miss how they covered the NBA, great story lines, good sound bites in between, the anchors were great talking about the game and the players, the camera angles. It just seemed so perfect, good times, great teams and team play. And the most important part, the players play hard, respected each other and there wasn't any crazy insane hate towards each other, nothing like today. They weren't swinging at each other and they didn't dress like thugs or clowns, like they do today. Jordan the billionaire baller was ice cold in his suits. Today it just seems more about egos and stats, minus the Denver Nuggets.
Players today act like they're going to a 9-to-5 office job. Show up, quietly do your job and go home. Those things you mentioned are gone and the sport seems very passionless to me these days.
Sixer and Sun Charles are strong as Shaq prime at 6'5 height. Chuck doesn't even took his game too seriously at that time. One of the best scoring power forward in game history.
Although I dislike Charles he was a monster when he was playing. Smart, strong guy that basically dominated Shaq on the court. If Charles played today he would dominate all the big men in todays league.
He didn't back than! Charles was just another allstar..if he was all that he wudda won a ring. Yet yaw same dudes say LBJ is a negative b/c he won 4/10 finals..yaw a so casual yaw sound like 6th graders..
