Like the first light of twilight, this music opens your eyes to old promises and to all the anomalies of nature. Evocative of powers beyond observation, these pieces pull the strings of the heart, attract nostalgia and awaken regrets, flayed lives and the torpor of tormented watchers 🌷

Startlingly wonderful quiet and subtle music in the composer's fantastic orchestration of his suite of sixteen solo piano pieces of the same title. Terrific!

These "Persian hours" were written first for piano - the piano version is yet played convincigly - then orchestrated by Koechlin, who was a marvellous orchestrator and wrote an authoritative treaty on orchestration. Koechlin perfectly understood the difficulty of the composition: give an oriental feeling, but avoid falling into the postcard or cartoon style. His score is very beautiful and worthy to be played from time to time in our concert halls, which it is not, unfortunately.

This work is new to me. I'm listening to the second movement as I write, and am not surprised that Jilal Jahangir 'dropped off!' When I'm tired (with my diabetes), I sometimes retire to afternoon bed and put a CD on and I'm usually asleep within a few minutes - even if the music is livelier! As it happens, I'm studying ancient Persian history. So what I'm hearing is most appropriate, both contextually and sonically. I see that Pierre-Louis Gastinel questions whether Segerstam is directing this particular recording. I think the maestro is Zinman, but it would be fascinating to hear the Finnish master's take on this or - for that matter - any French pieces!

Amazing! The hundredth anniversary of this piece and it still sounds more modern than most of what has been written since.

Like Debussy and Ravel, Koechlin was a brilliant orchestrator. This work is absolutely beautiful!

Such beautiful music. A shame that Koechlin is so little known. I guess it's because he was unclassifiable: not avant-garde, not Impressionist, not Neo-Classical. I especially like his orchestral songs.

Wonderful composer relegated to the footnotes of music history. I wonder why? Is it just public relations? Did music have to be ugly to be considered modern back in those days? This is moody, magical, and mysterious.

A Massively important Composer, and Orchestrator who should be much better known! I can hear the timbral source material, that has influenced cinematic composers such as Bernard Hermann, Jerry Goldsmith, and more recently, Johnny Greenwood, of Radiohead (There Will be Blood, and The Master). In fact - Koechlin's works with Ondes Martenot are absolutely stunning! Originally, these pieces were for piano. It's just wonderful to hear them orchestrated. Such Colors! Thank You!

A fantastic composer, yes, but I doubt he influenced any of those you named. who were probably unaware that he existed.

Correction: delete reference to Segerstam (he's credited by Wellesz!). I'm flabbergasted! Also, I think "pieces" should have read "piece." Sorry for the error.
