The biggest takeaway from that discussion: Charlie Kirk suddenly develops empathy once he becomes directly involved in something, until then there's zero consideration for someone else's situation. I've bought a house: aren't property taxes too high! I've had a child: oh my god, isn't taking care of someone else a huge strain on me and my finances! His surprise that Cenk's political viewpoint didn't change upon experiencing these life changes said it all, "You didn't have a revelation when you found all these things suck?" No, Charlie, we understood that these things are hard for everybody, we don't wait until we're in the same position to feel sympathy.
Yeah but that common sense. If my cousin comes into my house and takes a water bottle it’s obviously different from some stranger coming in and taking a water bottle.
@@mrdamage690 you’re comparing empathy for other people having a difficult time to someone breaking into your home and stealing from you? Why not compare apples and airplanes? Before I had kids, I still cared about child poverty. I still volunteered at my local children’s hospital. I still participated in community food drives and sponsored a child in a third world country. It is so bizarre for me that some of you can’t conceive of feeling a personal state in the welfare of strangers……even for those who will never know you, who don’t look like or believe the same things as you, who speak a different language and even those who live in another country from you. I was deeply invested in making the world a better place before owning a home, and wanted taxes to be reasonable, even when it didn’t impact me personally. That’s unconditional caring. Those of you who only care when it impacts you are the ones who are not working in a normal sphere of society. If I’m thirsty, but someone else will die without that, I’m not going to keep it for myself…..even if I really wanted that water. That’s because with or without kids, I have a pro-social mindset. It’s never been just about me. Not being able to care about other people, even over yourself is sociopathic. if you only care because of its impact on you or the people you consider your’s, that’s selfish and disordered thinking. There was a time we struggled to have kids, but it never changed my desire to leave the world a better place, or my willingness to accept others, take time to understand their needs, and work to lift them up. Being weird about someone else benefiting from something is the problem. Not being able to care unless you yourself are in the same boat is bizarre to me. I’ll never understand that mentality.

I really resonate with what Charlie is saying on having children changes your politics. I had my first kid at 18 I was basically full anarchy rage against the machine we should just abolish government revolution very liberal. By the time I had my second kid at 20 I was such a drastic change in my politics. Like instead of burning everything down I really wanted to create a world where my kids would have a chance. Where my kids wouldn't end up getting shipped off to war. Having a family doesn't make you a good person but having a well maintained family does indicate some level of responsibility
I can’t get over the change with Charlie Kirk when he does these interviews with Cenk and Ana. With them he comes across as reasonable, but when I listen to his shows, he says the most hateful stuff.
Politics ranges from a performance/game/to job for a lot of people and so they can be very charming/cordial when they're not in that role (sometimes surprisingly/scarily so). It's really only their supporters and fans who believe that they're dialed up 100% of the time. Of course, it's also true that some of them are disingenuous (i.e. grifters) and so it's easy to put on/drop the mask at will but sometimes there's also a basic respect between opposing sides that are anti-establishment even if they vehemently disagree.
He's a chameleon, out of necessity. He plays to the fears and cultural angst of his audience, while simultaneously, reinforcing the fears and cultural angst of his audience.
Conservatives as a general rule have blind spots in their brains which blocks evolution of intellect. Charlie Kirk would be pretty smart if he didn't let his closeted urges worry him so much.
@vijays6911 he's pulling the oldest trick in the book "talk fast to filibuster, interrupt and talk fast when someone counters my BS, empty and incorrect talking points. " It's not smart. We can do better.
I am historically not a fan of TYT. But to be honest, the more civil conversations you have with people on the other side of aisle, such as this one, the more broad of an audience you will get, and the more credibility you will garner. I am seeing more of this, and it is a GOOD sign for the general discourse in the world. Keep it up, and you will have more conservatives like me hearing what you have to say. Simply put, everyone in the conversation just seems so normal and cool when they’re not yelling at each other.. who would have thought?!
Agreed. Ana has earned a ton of points for me because she's actually changed her opinion about a lot of things that are reasonable. The road to normalcy is on the horizon.
Charlie Kirk definitely comes off like a reasonable conservative when he’s with TYT. But when he’s on X or on his show, he presents himself as a Trump loyalist. But it’s good that Kirk and TYT are having this conversation.
His intentions are clear and seeks to be reactionary (as the trend is post trump) to own college students but it works out when he’s talking about populist issues. He’ll still continue to push his culture war opinions instead which keeps the divide.

You sympathize with them, you don't empathize. No one in this comments knows the difference I swear. Since you nor anyone in your family have ever experienced it, you CANNOT empathize with people in that situation. It's not something you will, it's just a product of you having experienced that situation before which you haven't. The reason this is important is because Empathy is a stronger motivator than sympathy, and it also provides better insight for these types of situations. Lawmakers with sympathy say "I want to make this fair for people", people with EMPATHY say "I've gone through this backwards system before and I KNOW how to fix or help this system". You can support health care projects all the live long day, but that doesn't mean you'd be any good at fixing it. In fact, you know less because someone who has gone through it would know better about it than you.
It’s really revealing to me that Charlie Kirk’s policies are all based around favouritism for what he has decided is valuable in society such as having children or owning a home, such that he will completely neglect trying to help or caring about people experiencing different lifestyles. Conservatism is not about helping as many people in society as possible through a wide range of policies, but a narrow band of people who you personally value based on what you deem to be worthwhile.
I used to absolutely hate TYT after liking them in the beginning. Keep it up like this, have honest, friendly and constructive conversations with the right wing and you'll definitely get viewers like myself back again.
Too be honest, talks like this look more genuine because right wing commentators tend to tone down the hypocrisy on chats and interviews like this, rather than round tables used for clips. Even tucker carlsen appears "personable" outside his show when talking to left wingers. Because their show is a Grift and an act. Same way fox talks crap about the covid jab while ignoring it was mandatory for everyone to take it while working there at fox. Charlie's Grift is that his fans know he will do the racism and conspiracy theories on his show, but he will go onto leftist platforms, pretend to be reasonable, to lure people onto his platform.

There are plenty of people out there with kids who don't care about their own children as much as many of the rest of us do. And they don't vote, don't care about education, etc, etc. So just because you have kids, doesn't mean you are more involved in the care of the country.
I think the difference lies in lack of empathy. Republicans need to have their own kids to unlock all those complicated feelings of love etc., whereas the average Dem already feels those feelings, so the change for them when they have kids is not quite so profound.
Conservative platforms spend a LOT more time trashing liberals than the other way around. If liberals are always kind in return the "might is right" conservatives see that as weakness and it doesn't make them more respectful.

@@tayeelshaikh9228 Kirk is not the other side, he is a racist right wing nutjob, he is a very radical minority who we should just ignore, but no, here is tyt treating him as person worth listening to.
Kirk demonstrated wonderfully the main problem with conservatism: Lack of empathy. He was constantly astounded that people's views don't change once they get a house or have kids. It's almost like ... some people think about things ... before they're affected by them personally? As if ... different people ... have different experiences ... and you need to consider those?
That's called sympathy. I will say it for thr 100th time in this comment section. Sympathy is the ability to understand how someone might feel about a situation. Empathy is something that OCCURS when someone has experienced something YOU YOURSELF have experienced. If you are not affected by something personally, it is IMPOSSIBLE to have empathy. You can only show sympathy. Charlie is literally arguing for people to HAVE more empathy by having children. You don't will empathy into being, it is a product of circumstance. When Charlie says, you should have children, he is literally saying you should have children so that you may have more empathy for parents and keeping children safe. I want my politicians to have children so they have skin in the game and enough empathy to have the motivation and the practical solutions to keep children safe, which is harder to find when you just sympathize. People with sympathy will say "I want to keep children safe", people with EMPATHY will say "I actually KEEP my own children safe and I want to extend that to other families, because I empathize with their cause and I know ways to keep children safe, because I do it myself."
By his logic, a childless teacher (because I can't afford to have them 😅) I am unfit and unable to care about children?? Literally these are crazy people dude
No he’s saying that our government is better off run by people that understand the family dynamics and family values. I recommend you get your hearing checked if your take away is that Charlie is crazy
No. Empathy is a stronger motivator than sympathy. You say "I want to keep kids safe" and parents ACTUALLY make kids safe. You don't actually know the first thing about keeping children safe in a practical environment, and for their entire lives. I will 100% TRUST a parent make laws about children vs you who does not have experience. I am not saying, and neither is Charlie, you CANNOT make laws for children, but I do not blame people for trusting you less because you don't have children, for the reasons I've stated above.
As someone who has had a kid more recently. I can relate to Charlie. Its not that I didnt think about the future generations. Its that I care incredibly alot more now.
I think it was a good idea it shows the delusion that right-wing commentators in America seem to live in. I'm from the UK and all American politics are perceived as shifted to the right there in comparison with European democracies. The idea that the policies and values of what we regard as extremist and pandering to the interests of corporations and the very rich at the expense of the Americans who do all the work with none of the rights we enjoy is 'good for families' is surreal. Mr Kirk appears to be intelligenthe so must see Trump for what he is a selfish loudmouth with the attitude of a hard done to 13-year-old adolescent male but like all the other Republicans decidedly terrified of saying so. I think it's fair to say that virtually everyone in the UK and Europe including openly conservative politicians and voters want the Democrats to win and find the return of Trump or the Republican Party to power as at best the end of democracy in the US and at worst an existential threat to ourselves, America and the world. Please beat him!
