Charlie could do more with four drums than other drummers with 20+in their kits. That traditional, elegant stick grip, impeccable timing-all without an earpiece monitor, he's watching Mick and the band for his timing. LOVE this video. A great artist, and humble, gentle man. Rest well.
Charlie was an average drummer at best. But he was perfect for the Stones. Tho it's worth noting, recording engineer Jimmy Miller played drums on the studio recording of You Can't Always Get What You Want. Cuz Charlie apparently couldn't find the right groove.
@@ulissesrocha3365 Like I said, Charlie was fine for the Stones. But there are drummers from that era who were much better imo. Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham, to name 3, were all more capable drummers than Charlie.
@@Squirt69 Dude... I was a professional drummer for years. I worked, touring and gigging with well know songwriters who wrote songs you've probably heard. So I know good songwriting and good drumming. Now... who the fuck are you???
Charlie Watts was never the most flashy drummer. He wasn't known for the frenzied solos of Cream's Ginger Baker, or for placing explosives in his kick drum like The Who's Keith Moon. Instead, he was the subtle, stoic heartbeat of The Rolling Stones for almost 60 years. We all Brazil fans will miss Charlie. RIP 🇧🇷
@@mauroc.7864 Charlie Watts was one of rock's greatest drummers. He didn't do the flashy theatrics that other drummers did because he didn't have to! And he knew it! The stones would have not been the success they have been if it had not been for Charlie.
Thank you, Charlie Watts, for over half a Century of entertaining millions as Drummer and calm, cool, collected Backbone for The Rolling Stones. May you Rest In Peace, Sir!
Charlie Watts, best drummer ever, rest in peace. I've been entertained by your wonderful music for a long time. Thank you so much. Please have a good rest.
Whatever he does you're right it feels like his drum parts drive the groove. Something about the hihat and the snare and frequently a drum roll that repeats. Im not sure where he learned that jazz?
Charlie has been quoted about 50 years with the Stones. He said it's 10 years playing drums and 40 years standing around waiting for something to happen.
Charlie! The great unsung hero of the Stones. The man who sits in back with his beatific smile & nails down the tastiest beats with power & economy- never a wasted movement or showy flash. In Keith Richards’ must-read autobiography, “Life”, he talks about how amazing Charlie is. On the gigantic stages they play today, Mick runs waaaay out into the audience on a catwalk, so far that his vocals take an extra second or two to reach the band back onstage, so to sync up the drums(& thus, the rest if the band) with what Mick is actually singing, he WATCHES Mick, and ADJUSTS his timing ever-so-slightly so that the band is in sync with Mick’s vocals! That’s GENIUS! And it comes from playing together for 50+ years! Much respect!
How is that even possible? They use monitors, earpieces, microphones, speakers, mixers, stage speakers, electrified instruments, radio transmitters instead of amp cables...... and electricity itself to power it all. Am I supposed to believe that a drummer can't hear a singer on time because of distance? In 2020? If it is true I'm about to be rich..... edit: Mick would have to run from the UK to a Pacific island to have a one or two second delay.
If you’ll notice, Charlie is not wearing a headset or an ear piece like Neil Peart & many others did/do. Charlie drummed organically, and so the sound of Mick singing, once he got that far out from the stage, created enough of a small delay that he had to watch him and adjust his timing accordingly.
Well, that day has come. Do they tour without Charlie? I know they should finish the current tour because so many people are holding tickets. But will they kick off another tour after this one?
He wasn’t flashy, just solid and efficient. And he always served the song, not himself. That’s why I think the Stones are done without him. He was the backbone of the Stones. RIP Charlie Watts- 80 years is a long life and over 50 years in a rock band is just crazy. He had a great run!
@@tillitsdone For me they are. I’m not interested in the Stones without Charlie Watts. It just won’t be the same. I don’t care who they find. The end of an Era.
@Joan In Florida and @Dyn Jarren, I’m with you guys. I can’t go see the Stones without Charlie. He’s every bit as irreplaceable as Mick and Keith. I have been saying I’d love to see a tour as the Glimmer Twins. Just acoustic, what have you. No drummer. Leave that seat vacant because it can’t be filled. I think that’d be therapeutic for everyone. But I guess we’ll see what happens after this tour… I know it was already booked and they couldn’t have really changed it much.
Charlie Watts was, in a sense, my musical hero. Although I never played any music (but wish too), I was still inspired by him. His elegance and his skills are just so inspirational. The energy and vibes you get from this man, is just… aw hell! I am unable to word my feelings now. Among all the Stones, he is my favourite. He is a true gentleman in the whole music industry. His skills are unmatchable. You see Charlie sitting in the back like a gentleman and playing amazing rock n’ roll on his drums, and keeps looking at the rest of bandmates, jumping in madness and joy, as if they were his children. He is always so happy. Being a teen, I dream quite a lot. I once was dreaming of interviewing Charlie Watts and y’know go on a tour with him. Visiting music museums and discussing music history with him. Oh how I would love to sit and talk with him. But with him gone now, I am left in shambles. What an humble man, he was. Adieu, Charlie! Rest in Peace.
I'm just watching this on replay non stop. Love watching Charlie on this tune! Rest in peace....🙏 sweet, talented , classy, dear man! Love you Charlie!!! 💔💔💔🎶🎶🎶
RIP to the greatest drummer in a rock band. He Was the sound of the band, along with Keith. Jazzy touching with 2 and 4 quite late, mixed with rough and instinctive guitar = sound of the Stones.
Charlie shows once and for all that to drive the greatest rock'n roll band in the world you don't need technicalities - you have to listen to the music and play from the heart !!!
Without doubt the best beat drummer and originality ever in the rock and roll business. The world lost a great one in 2022. RIP Charlie Watts. They use Charlie to reset metronomes.
Unpretentious Charlie, man what a drummer. This clip really shows how hard he hits the skins, especially the licks at the end there. He is so effortless looking from the front and a distance, but he really gives them a whack here.
Completely shocked that he has left this Earth, Charlie's in the pocket jazz style will forever make my gerbil wheel spin not to mention his very gentlemanly demeanor and very well-rounded individual
Honey, the thumbs downers have no idea what they are talking about, no brains, no sense of style or music. Charlie was the heart and soul of the Stones.
Charlie is so humble, he's so relaxed and subtle back there the rest of the guys are movin' and groovin' but he just stays composed, calm, cool, and collected like 'Go ahead fellas, I got this' 😉
I always thought that Charlie is the backbone of the group, adding control and rationality to what would otherwise be a band out of control. This man really shines at his 68s.
I just love Charlie in this vid....love how he's paying attention to what Keith's playing to get the "vibe" of how the song is going to feel that particular night....he lays down the back beat...and he gets this little grin of relief as he's watching Mick and feels it all pull together. YAY, Charlie!!! :-)
Rest in Peace Mr Watts. Thank you for all the great times. Your heart Will always beat on thru your drumming in every song youve played. No more words....
Every day since Charlie died, I've watched this Monkey Man piece at least once or twice a day. So glad I got to see them in June 2019 in Chicago. But I was hoping for one more time. I don't know how they can possibly replace him. Thanks for being the heart of my favorite band, Charlie. Now pardon me, I'm gonna hit Monkey Man again.
an intent, focused master craftsman utterly locked in. so great to see excellence in action. paying strict attention and seems to be enjoying himself...rare combo.
Hawt damn !!! how charlie rolls into that intro 🙏🏽 idc what any drummer says to me he’s dope and he still throws it down w that traditional grip 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
I love the trolls here ... can you imagine even one of them spending twenty seconds behind a kit with this band in front of 30,000 people without pissing their pants? What makes Charlie so special is that nobody can play exactly like him. Like all true greats he is unique.
Pete Greenfield Stones didn't gel until Charlie.. thank you God for Ina Stuart who Met Brian Jones, who hooked up with Mick and Keefer, who hooked up with Bill Wyman who had extra amps...and then Charlie, who thought they might last a few months...I'm an old man now and thank you God and the Rolling Stones for the back ground music that enriched my life
Devin Miller right on mate I'm an old guy ..been to over 50 stones concerts. since the 70s ..huge fan of keefer, but I bring binoculars (even if I have close seats) to watch Charlie.. mesmerizing..thank you God,
It's pure talent that Charlie role models for drummers of all skill sets. Just look at what he does with a minimum drum set, when you are this proficent you don't need a lot of extra stuff ....
I'm babaifa ejalonibu from West Africa I deal with all type of spiritual work like protection work bullets proof love spells bad dream if you want to be famous and rich if you want to be spiritually strong by ancestors power and any evil will not fall on you anymore.
its nice to see Charlie being the star for once - i'd say he's a bit of an unsung hero to be honest. just love the way he makes the effort to smile at the camera; i want to give him a big hug!
