Lyrics:
I used to think that
I should be good at everything
now I know I was wrong
I used to think that
I should do right by everyone
now I know I was wrong
a couple of things is enough
but now I know that every wave is just that - cresting and crashing
if it haunted you then, now you don’t remember it
sever every microscopic atom of connection to,
“I can barely keep myself afloat when I’m not saving you.”
Resurrected from the basement,
I’m at capacity, I’m spilling out of me
Desecrated and complacent
I’m at capacity, I’m spilling out of me
It’s got nothing to do with me
I used to think one man could fill me up
But now I know that if I’m always stuck obsessed with somebody else
distracting myself from looking at myself
sever every microscopic atom of connection to,
“I can barely keep myself afloat when I’m not saving you”
Resurrected from the basement
I’m at capacity, I’m spilling out of me
Desecrated and complacent
I’m at capacity, I’m spilling out of me
it’s got nothing to do with me
I was raised an east coast witch like
doing nothing’s sacrilegious
triple overtime ambitious
sentimental, anxious kid
I was raised an east coast witch like
doing nothing’s sacrilegious
triple overtime ambitious
sometimes nothing is delicious
Resurrected from the basement
I’m at capacity, I’m spilling out of me
Desecrated and complacent
I’m at capacity, I’m spilling out of me
It’s got nothing to do with me

i wish they still released songs like in the 70s/80s with 12” versions, because an extended version of this song with a longer guitar buildup to the amazing bridge and the song ending by drifting off with the rift and lyrics extended on repeat would be so amazing. “i was raised an east coast witch like / doing nothing’s sacrilegious / triple overtime ambitious / sometimes nothing is delicious”. I love the song as is already, Charly Bliss is one of my favorite bands can’t wait for the nyc show.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Irony: people claiming to love the band and commenting negatively on their new song/evolved/growing sound, but not realizing the song is about not caring about making everyone happy. “It’s got nothing to do with me” has nothing to do with them & everything to do with you. Listen to it again.

regarding these thoughts i like this quote from the movie "Basquiat" "But I'm talking about the same kind of work, the same style, so people recognize you and don't get confused, you know? Then once you're famous, airborn, you know, you gotta KEEP doing it in the same way even after it's boring, unless you want people to get mad at you. Which they will anyway." BINGO

I feel like some critical thinking would tell you that people are allowed to dislike certain changes (it doesn't mean they'd dislike ALL changes), despite whatever the band happens to say, and that changes are still open to criticism no matter what shield the members want to try and hold up.

I believe I read every comment (and reply to...) on this vid's page. The upper 75% was essentially all praise, with much more criticism on the bottom. I'd never heard of Charly Bliss before letting my YT phone app play on, about 6 months ago (probably searched on a song by Metric). Not sure, but Capacity may have been the first song I've ever heard by CB. Took a minute to acclimate to her voice, but came to love its character. And the song...well, I'm back listening to it again, so obviously I like it enough to seek and listen. Common among even those who also love this song, is comparing it to Guppy. I totally get that established fans have a tendency to expect the same "feeling" they got from earlier work. But let's pause to consider probably one of the most common criticisms of most mainstream music produced over the last 20 years. I'm 57. I started listening to rock and pop regularly at around 6 y.o. (1970). The majority of mainstream bands' character and production evolved/progressed dramatically with each successive album, with a few exceptions, of course. Most who're familiar with those bands could fairly accurately guess when the album was released, within 3-5 years, just by the way it sounds. The first couple Beatles albums may have been similar in style, but after a few more albums and years, with the exception of recognizing the vocalist, the music produced in the late '60s was essentially nothing like their early '60s stuff. I don't ever remember a single peep come from anyone, complaining that their "new stuff" just doesn't like the Beatles they came to appreciate. Conversely, it was specifically the evolution that had people going even more nuts. And the same goes for Zeppelin, the Stones, etc., etc., etc. I'm thinking it's sad that those 20-30 years younger than I, who've grown up listening mostly to music released after 2000, of which has essentially the opposite approach of that produced the preceding 50 years. Post 2000 rock (and all its sub-genres, metal, rap, etc.) music is "conformist" based; that which isn't too far off post-2K established genres. Music companies won't risk producing music that's too creative, as they now want to play it safe. Make less than some of the legendary pre-2K artists maybe, but less risk of bad investments in failed experiments. I was a teenager in San Diego when a band called Oingo Boingo released their debut album. By the mid '80s, San Diego and L.A. had two "New Wave" rock sister stations (S.D.'s 91X and L.A.'s KROQ). Both of which were highly open-minded to the aforementioned new wave genre, which was (by comparison of today's music) wildly creative and experimental. Bands like the B-52s, Devo, and Oingo Biongo (to name only a few) got tons of airplay, and probably owe their existence to those two stations. Anyway, I became a huge fan of Boingo after listening to their first album. My friends and I were fanatical about listening to them on cassette in our cars (we were essentially up to no good, so didn't spend a lot of time hanging out any one of our parents houses). Boingo's "Only a Lad" album was unlike anything we'd ever heard in 1981. And we dug it big time. So naturally, we were ultra-excited when they released their 2nd LP, "Nothing to Fear" a year (and 3 days) later. I immediately bought the LP and fired it up on the home stereo. Man, was I bummed (initially). It wasn't anything like their 1st album. Danny Elfman (who'd go on to be one of Hollywood's most sought after movie soundtrack composer/arranger), stayed with the "flow" (ironically, going with the flow was not going with the flow, like bands do now) of exploration into new sounds and styles. It's not like I threw Nothing to Fear in the trash after one listen, and while not that enthused, I kept playing it. I now consider it to be another awesome album by Boingo. It was actually their 3rd album that they shifted into a more mainstream pop sound, of which I liked, but didn't like as much as their first works. But that's so very common and not necessarily a bad thing. U2's first album "Boy", was cutting edge when it came out. But again, thanks to the New Wave radio stations, got airplay. They're a band that masterfully segwayed from creating their own highly distinctive sound, to more mainstream, but retaining tons of easily recognizable unique character along the way. The vast majority of comments are highly positive on CB's Capacity. Toward the bottom, I read a few that in effect faulted Charly Bliss for producing music quite different than on Guppy...some saying they just don't like it. I'm confident they're having the same expectations problem I had with Boingo's 2nd album. Since I doubt I've heard any early stuff by CB, I had zero expectations. No matter what it is in life, we set ourselves up for disappointment whenever we have expectations. And I believe there are some lyrics echoing a similar sentiment in Capacity. I'm a part-time musician (guitar, bass, drums) off and on since 1979. I decided to stop learning other music after the first year or so of playing, to inspire me to always compose and play my own music. I've got rough recording of songs that others have really liked, but I've *never* written one tune with the primary intension of pleasing others. I've only ever written music I like to hear. As it turns out, I think my music distinct in its character, each song diverse from any other, yet not some bizarre sound like King Crimson in the '80s (they managed to have one or two songs played on 91X and KROQ, but most of their stuff was...out there). The sad part I mentioned, is that pre-2K, the biggest hits were probably the product of pure inspiration, the last thing on the composers' mind was that they'll sit down and try to write a song that "people will like". The best music is likely an after-the-fact deal. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were almost surely in the purest of creative zones when they wrote Over the Hills and Far Away. That's an example of what I call a "pure song". I've picked up the guitar uncountable times, with conscious intent on writing a new "great" tune and...nothing but crap came out. My favorites are those that seemed to come from somewhere else. I feel more like I discovered it vs. created it. They were almost effortless to write, surprising me on the spot once established. Capacity's lyrics, as many have commented, are awesome. It's one of those songs whose lyrics seem "perfect". The greatest songs, I believe, are those whose lyrics don't just try to fill in with sometimes anything that may only vaguely fit what was probably initially only hummed vocals. Though obviously other musicians may do it the other way around, I've always written the instrumental part first, then come back and "listened" for vocal harmonies and lyrics that fit the guitar. One of my favorite songs of those I've written, had the guitar written when I was in my early '20s. I played that riff for friggin' 20 years, with not so much as a puckered-lip whistle along as far as vocals. Never once tried...just like the guitar piece for what it was. Then, about 17 years later I think, lyrics and vocal harmony pretty much came out of nowhere. As much as I loved the guitar music alone, once I came up with the lyrics, I'm amazed at the phenomenon of creativity. I just tried writing new lyrics (no music yet, part of the prob) a few hours ago, and came up with a nice, fresh, hot and steamy pile of pure lyrical garbage. But whenever I think of the lyrics to "In Time", I'm very suspicious that some other entity was involved (won't get too far out here), because the lyrics seem virtually perfect to me. And they seemed to come out of thin air. I'm trying to say, regardless of whether I'm determined or not, my cognitive thought processes don't have the ability to create lyrics that fit the mood and emotion/s, even from line to line. Something else contributed. Capacitys' lyrics aren't just great because they poetically express thoughts we appreciate and relate to, it's that the vocal harmony matches the mood. "Resurrected from the basement (lower notes, building slightly higher, just as one would if they'd just come back to life after what I can only surmise would be a very groggy state of being (deadness), slowly walking up the basement steps), then,'" I'm at capacity!" shoots straight up with emotionally appropriate high notes, perfectly reflecting one's emotions when speaking about (truly) being at capacity (trying to deal with everything coming at them in life). In other words, by my definition of a "pure song", the vocal lyrics and harmonies could almost be spoken at a table by the person going through that stuff in life, with spoken tonal inflexions we all use when speaking about stuff that's emotionally impacting us. Think of someone saying, "I used think that I should be good at everything". One might speak it with the underlying (albeit diminished) tonal fluctuations we all use when we speak. The song only heightens or "energetically emphasizes" the flowing variances of notes we use during standard-issue flap sessions. To exemplify a song I like, but doesn't quite compare lyrically to Capacity...Foster the People's "Don't Stop" comes to mind. I dig the song in general, but the lyrics, I'd bet big, are mostly just "filler".

@@miked4309 I believe you suggested Charly Bliss to me on a Speedy Ortiz youtube comment, so I thank you sir. Guppy was one of my favorite albums of '17. Hoping to say the same about this one in '19.

I was watching this and saw the news caster on the TV and thought “is that Michelle from Japanese Breakfast!?!” And then I saw the name was Shelly Breakfast, and I think it’s a safe assumption. Fun cameo, fun video, fun song
