Charred Wheels & Blackened Hub Bands | Engels Coach Shop

Hot shrinking wagon tires often leaves charred edges on the felloes that need cleaning up afterwards. Several hub bands also need reset and quenching them in used motor oil blackens them without having to use paints. This hot oiling process helps against rust as well.

These sorts of "Living History" projects are incredibly important for modern society. It gives younger people a reference of "how we arrived at NOW". Its definitely humbling to think how hard the mule-drivers were working when the borax wagons were in full swing. Keep up the good work. -Andy

I thought the same.. I got hooked on Engels coach shop from those first videos building those wagons.. went down the rabbit hole to find out all about Borax and the history and what Dave has accomplished here is indeed no small thing. Those wagons are a work of art and absolutely beautiful and a treasure that they are being preserved for people to see how it was done and how people lived back over a 100 years ago. I'm difinetly planing my trip to go see them..

Observation: Being a skilled tradesmen from NY and working in Las Vegas NV. When something is built in the Northeast, Northwest or the south. When that item is shipped to the dry southwest. Their is considerable shrinkage. For instance. When installing cabinets with raised panel doors. 6 weeks or so after installation. You have to go back and touch up those raised panel doors with touch up stain because they shrink to the point there was a 3/16" unstained mark around the top & sides. While hanging sheet rock on a 16" on center studded wall. On my 3 sheet I was bearly on the stud. Complexed as to how this is possible. I keep checking my 16" on center 6 ways to Sunday. Then I checked the length of an 8' board of sheet rock. I'll be dammed. The sheet rock is 3/16" short. So by the end of a 3 board run. You're screwless...L0L So when making wagon wheels in the northwest and those wheels spending their lives in the southwest. I can understand the shrinkage.

I'm assuming that the flaming oil bath on the heated hub bands was kinda like seasoning a cast iron skillet - you get a hard polymerizrd coating that resists corrosion and you can fry an egg on it without sticking. Nice editing effects on the production end, BTW. Your new camera jockey is a winner.

That's just the audio track being out of sync with the video. Sound takes 0.003 seconds to travel the 1m from the hammer to the camera - this would not account for the apparent delay in the video

Why did something as relatively simple and freakin’ brilliant as wheel dollies take so long to come up with?? On a different note, would it damage those Borax wheels if they fell over on concrete? A) yes B) no, they are tough C) sometimes D) really don’t want to find out E) sure as shooting damage anything under them.
@paulg3336
@paulg3336 2 года назад
If they fell onto a flat concrete floor, the only contact the wheel would make would be the steel hub band and the steel tyre
@froat1

Paul G, my point exactly. That would be quite a weighty shock load of side force to the spoke/hub joints. I suspect it is door B even so.

I'm curious if whomever the driver is of that borax wagon will be able to tell just how much you tuned up those wheels compared to when they got there after 5 years of shrinking in the desert. As everything gets loose I can only imagine the wagon starts to destroy itself so to speak when used.

Great as always. Enjoyed some of the new perspectives but not as much of a fan of the slow mo. To show a rare detail, perhaps, but when overused it interrupts the flow of the filmmaking. Personally (and it is only personally) I find ‘less is more’ when it comes to effects.
