Will Apple announce generative AI at WWDC 2023, their next World Wide Developer Conference in April? And if so, in what form? John Gruber returns to the channel to wonder out loud about Copilot for Xcode, bringing AI code generation to the last IDE left standing without them. Also, Magic Eraser for iOS 17 Photos, outpainting, fixing the fried image processing, and more!

I currently have no idea on how to code in Apple swift, and yet was able to get chatGPT to write a module to do speech to text. Absolutely amazing

If Apple is true to their nature they won't just do a "Me-too!" AI tool and stick to the play they were already panning for this year. But speaking of AI Apple really needs Siri to catch up to and be as conversational as the other AI tools that are out now. It would be pretty much corporate malfeasance if they already haven't had some AI stuff cooking in the background for some time now.

Apple forecast the "Knowledge Navigator" ~30 years ago, and dropped the ball. However, someone did develop a clever and free Shortcut that links Siri and ChatGPT, but you do need an (paid) OpenAI Account for a Key Code used in the Shortcut.

Hi, updating xcode to 14.3 i receive the log "[PipelineLibrary] Mapping the pipeline data cache failed, errno22" when adding the MapView in the viewcontroller. I Receive this error only when i test on a real device not in the simulator. Can i fix it ? Is a common problem? Thanks for the time I appreciate so much.

AI, and ChatGPT etc sound like a step in the right direction.. but there are issues.. These AI is not perfect.. In fact someone demoed on here ChatCPT for the Commodore 64, which I tried in emulation,, and despite some mistakes on it's part, not my part, it didn't work. (few lines were doubled up)

My worry is that Apple have been weak on the application of AI - part of this is due to the mantra of using on device capabilities - which I support by the way - but some features have to be cloud based.. Apple Neural Engine is phenomenal and is not being used anything like as much..

@Tech-geeky
@Tech-geeky 9 месяцев назад
...and being 'cloud based' for the engine, it will work for those who use icloud only.. i won't be one of them. It's the same reason why i don't use Siri either. My control comes first,even if you place it inside an eco-system.
@petersuvara

We just use ChatGPT, which is quite effective in support development. It's more about having a better integration. The story about SIRI is critical... We need an API for our Apps to connect this, instead of using UI all the time directly.

Copilot is already in JetPens and Neovim. I wonder if Microsoft would license Copilot? Better yet, make Xcode extensions way more powerful and they would probably make it themselves.
@toadlguy
@toadlguy Год назад
Copilot is helpful, but overhyped. Is it worth $10 a month? Sure. But it isn’t the end of coding and it makes a lot of mistakes. If you need to generate a bunch of code mappings, it’s great, but for unique code, not so much. What Apple needs to do is get on the AI band wagon - like TensorFlow for Apple silicon.

There is every reason to believe apple was caught flat footed by chatgpt etc. The company’s biggest competitors all were! Microsoft had to spend heavily to pick up the openAI partnership. Alphabet is in crisis management mode right now, having joined their two ~waring AI groups last week. Why would apple be better caught up on this stuff? And even if they somehow sprinted to catch up to openAI, Apple doesn’t just jam stuff into their products. I agree Xcode could get AI code completion but I would bet it is limited. Apple takes its time with stuff. If Siri is going to get better (and it’s long overdue) it needs to be part of the headset.

I think Apple may surprise us. Anyone who has used Apple’s tech support will know that they have an AI based phone triage system. Hence clearly they gave some degree of NLP that can take voice as an input (dictation showed that this is possible on device without the need to run on a remote server), so compression is not the issue. So that leaves execution, which any Apple user know will be under strict privacy and safety controls. I think this will be the limiting factor for Apple .

Great conversation fellas! It seems like a no brainer that Apple should be working on these, but not hearing anything makes me feel like they are missing the opportunity. I would love a Copilot feature in Xcode! Imagine how amazing Siri could be and I am so sick of my kids talking about Google phones and how awesome the picture editing is, which are pretty amazing. Apple needs to step it up! Have an awesome day!

I don't think Apple would have a Exec. VP for machine learning and AI on its leadership page unless they were deeply committed and working on such things. My hope is that Apple is working on three initiatives: 1. A complete overhaul to transform Siri into a truly fluent and integrated voice-driven user interface. 2. Deep, layered architectural re-wiring of file system, spotlight, and other pieces to provide a coherent and unififed way to organize, relate, and categorize information into a personal library. 3. On top of those two, the development of the Knowledge Navigator (an Apple concept from decades ago) that can become each of our own "AI" assistants. With KN working within the spirit of Apple's Privacy & Security initiatives, Apple can upend the Search market as we know it.

4:19 To be fair that doesn't sound very Apple to me, I wouldn't describe Apple exactly as a 'purist' when it comes to making decisions about what the photo or video you took should look like or even the music you listen to from your HomePod should sound like, but they also don't play with your photo to the point where they're just telling lies about it, they just do their computational adjustments to squeeze the best results they can out of their hardware. On the point of being a purist the closest they've ever gotten to being worthy of being called a purist is with their displays and them bringing lossless audio to Apple Music. The 'turn stereo to spatial audio' option for AirPods is more about trying to make people understand the difference between traditional stereo audio and spatial audio so they can understand what it is and the value of actually well-tuned spatial audio, than trying to convince people with a gimmick to subscribe to Apple Music imo (or at least it's double purpose). And their excellent 10-bit dithering on their displays can also be shown as an example to them making the most out of their hardware.

AR without a strong AI is going to be useless, and Apple is hopeless in AI (unfortunately as they have Neural Engine)
@Gilamath.
@Gilamath. Год назад
Apple is far from hopeless from AI, they just have an annoying voice assistant. Look at all the stuff that’s AI but not the voice assistant. For example, the special widget on iOS that displays eight different apps on the Home Screen based on the on-phone AI’s prediction of what app you’re likely to want. It guesses right pretty much every time. I nearly never need to use an app that the widget doesn’t offer me Apple’s been working on AI for years, and they do some really great stuff while still maintaining privacy boundaries. I think we can afford to be a bit optimistic about their AI offerings over the next few years. And don’t believe the hype, Apple isn’t doomed to perpetual AI last place (or really in much trouble at all) if they don’t ship product this year. That’s just a media narrative designed to generate Discourse for the sake of additional content production Large language models are the future of AI for sure, but we’ve still got a ways to go yet before society comes up with solid place for these models in daily life. Apple will likely be part of that process, regardless of what they talk about this WWDC

It's funny; i've never had a problem with Siri, and I use her all the time, at least 50 times a day, to play podcasts or music, stop/rewind/fast forward podcasts or music, make phone calls, answer calls, turn on do not disburb, turn on low power mode -- all through my airpods when my phone is in my pocket or another room. But in the past 6 months or so there have been issues. An example - i also constantly check sports scores with Siri while I'm working or cleaning. But she doesn't have as much functionality as she used to have. I used to be able to ask, 'Who hit home runs for the Yankees today,' 'How many points did R.J. Barrett score,' etc., but now she can't answer those questions. She also disconnects my bluetooth speaker on occasion when I ask a question while connected to the speaker. Also, the last couple of her words now often trail off where you can't hear them. It's also hit or miss if you ask it to play a podcast whether she answers that she is playing the podcast or just plays it without answering. It's just weird, and she's a feature i hope gets improved, at least to where she used to have been (note I do have a 14 Pro Max and the latest software version of iOS, so it's not an issue of not having the newest hardware/software).
