Hey guys, I am very happy to see the progress you have made. As the former owner of Blue Moon my wife and I have been watching your videos with a combination of happiness for you and sadness because we loved that boat and miss it. All of the points you respectfully raised in your cost videos are very fair. I personally was a little shocked and very disappointed to see how quickly the boat degraded while sitting on the pin. Let that be a warning to others who are thinking a boat makes a great holiday spot. It does, but for us, after travelling to Pender Island then spending two days cleaning/drying everything and a day or two to repair what went wrong and wow suddenly this hasn't been much of a relaxing holiday so far! Yes the shift cable was a shocking bill to pay. If I had known I would have replaced it myself.Sorry. It does however make me feel a little better about the hose that rubbed through during your passage. I was sick that perhaps I had left such a potentially hazardous situation for you. Your mechanic (I sincerely hope I don't know who you used) should have left that in a better state after spending 9hrs working in the area. As you know we live on a boat up island. We are battling the same issues. Corroding hardware from former owners and their terrible repairs, condensation, mould in the most surprising places and the occasional rough seas. In the end it is definitely not for everyone but for those of us who do like it well, we love it. You have made that boat yours, I am so happy that Blue Moon is being cared for the way she deserves. She will do the same for you. G&D

That mechanic needs to be stopped enough said about that. I have a late 80 Catalina 30 I am about to convert to electric drive and remove all the diesel equipment. I will be more than happy to donate any usable diesel parts to blue moon. I think they got a great vessel to set our with.

Hi Glen, It was heartwarming to read this message from you. Both Gillian and I want to thank you again for this vessel, you have helped to make many of our dreams come true. As someone (this is Jonas writing) who is new to the world of sailboats, I have been amazed and humbled by the lineage and history that each boat carries with it. As you mention, it seems to me they require almost daily care, and this is a time commitment that is close to impossible for most people to make, especially if they have professional/family/life obligations and other challenges. We don't want you to feel any guilt about the condition of the vessel during the sale: in fact, we are so grateful for it! We feel that you sold it for a very reasonable price, a price which has allowed us, as young people, to be able to live this way. As a fellow liveaboard, you will know more than most what it is like to live in a space like this and face all little hiccups, but at the end of it all is an enduring sense of love and appreciation for these majestic floating objects we have chosen to live aboard. The sea and the weather and the bird poop tries to push back, but we'll keep at it!! Thanks again for everything, we are happy that you saw the video and reached out! Jonas & Gill

I 100% agree with you about the gym pass being a great addition to a budget (for those long showers and movement!) I am thinking that your maintenance cost estimate is way low. You have to pay for a haul out, yard time, cleaning, bottom paint (about $200 US per gallon), and maybe labor. And a huge hit every five or ten years to replace standing rigging, plus of course sails. I would guess 2- 3 K per year if you can do most of the work yourself. BUT I like your video and your personal sparkle you bring to this.

That was great that you informed nubies that it's not cheaper, but a way of life. On paying that much for showers. Hook up an inline water heater in the helm and shower outside for free. A $20 propane tank refill last for 4 months including cooking on your grill and stove.

Galvanic corrosion. You should install a galvanic isolator. Have you considered fishing? The boat does have equity. Money back when you sell it.
@youtubeuser1052
@youtubeuser1052 3 года назад
Definitely look into a galvanic isolator if you're living full time on shore power. The issue is basically that without one, your shore power line is connecting you electrically to all the other boats so that everybody is sharing all the zinc anodes. Whichever anodes are in good condition will take up the slack for whichever ones are in bad condition, with no regard for who owns which anode. Changing your anodes frequently just means you're helping protect the boats of the people who don't care enough to protect their own boat. You need an isolator if you want your zinc to protect your boat without also protecting all your neighbors' boats.

Expecting costs to skyrocket. So interesting to see alternatives like this. I've always considered sailing as a hobby and even maybe for living, content like this really pushes me to consider it further. Side note; I highly suggest a book called 'The Philosophy of Sailing' by Christian Williams. It got me so much more into sailing than I was before, even though I've been around boats my entire life. I lived, with my wife and 2 children, for 5 years on the east cost of the US and Caribbean. Good to see a young couple living on a boat. Consider getting a good router that you can hook a larger antenna to for your WiFI - I have used that combination with a marina and 3/4 of a mile to the marina router. Router around $50, antena $75 wiring $22. Look for an RV long range WIFi antenna - needs to be a non-directional antenna because the boat moves around. I think your maintenance numbers are low. We were also taking open ocean trips (Chesapeake Bay to Bahamas for example) . Our boat was larger, a 50 foot Benetau.

I never heard of paying for showers... would think that would be part of your “livaboard” fee.
@freyjasvagabond
@freyjasvagabond 3 года назад
Depends where you are but it is very common. The busier the marina the more likely to see pay showers. Often free for members and guests of the marina. One marina near here has two set of bathrooms, one for the public which costs 25cents (last time i saw) and a free one for marina members. This one used to be free for the public but it kept getting trashed, not in a graffiti or damaged way I dont think. That set of bathrooms is also off to the side of the marina area and on faces some hotels and other popular walkways for tourists and locals. Usually the charge is something like 25cents and I admit the bathrooms by the hotels have been much better since they did that. One issue is that the area there is in need of more public bathrooms so charging for one doesnt always help with that. But, its also a private bathroom that the only reason there is a charge is due to a few who disrespected a basic necessity like a toilet. So, I dont blame them. (that one by the hotel only has showers in their member bathrooms tho).

This is also why I have an ongoing list of free restrooms, showers, internet, and other services.

I've been trying to get a rough idea of the way of keeping warm and heat in the boat as well. So thank you. Just a ton of research on it before I can actually go through with everything. For me it would not be about saving money since I am already retired it would be about living on the boat. Of course I wouldn't be having a regular engine I would gut that and go full electric.

Hello from Southern California , your marina rates are roughly the same as ours . Except water and power are included in the slip rent , no charge for showers . We are in Alamitos Bay Long beach , Ca . North from us is Wilmington , slip rent there is a little cheaper and they have a nice DIY boat yard . South from us is Newport , the prices there are crazy . A little further is Dana point , a little more $'s then Long Beach and there is a waiting list . Next South , is San Diego , about the same as Dana . Next South , Mexico ! All these marina's allow live aboards with a extra fee of about $120.00 for a couple . From our harbor Alamitos , only 26 miles off shore is Catalina Island . Check it out . Good luck , you two .

Comment issues....Get a Yandina Galvanic Isolater to keep your metalsand zincs on the boat while on shore power. Also to pick up wifi better you can either buy a wireless bridge with a directional antenna or something like a Ubiquity Bullet M2 and an antenna. Also they sell five gallon water heaters for around a hundred dollars. If you don't have one already some people install those for showers...though getting the water to the heater is probably an issue for you.

Nice video, I have owned 5 houses and there is a LOT of maintenance you wouldn't get in an apt, water heaters, plumbing, roofing etc, I am in a big house now and it's too expensive to heat the whole thing. I plan on moving on to my Catalina 30, I assume you were calculating in Canadian dollars. I am going to rent a storage unit that will fit my BMW Convertable and use my Land Rover to sit outside at the marina, then I can put my winter/summer clothes swap out etc in there to free up space in the boat and weight when I go cruising. I did put my boat on the list for rental when I am away and they did rent my space out when I was away for weekends or a week etc so that helps a little during the summer. Good luck with the boat, I know I love mine too and people need to know if you don't like to putter on boats it won't work out too well, things are better when you do maintenance a little at a time, and cleaning and polishing while enjoying the sun and a beer becomes a lifestyle.

I could hear the bells from the Royal BC Museum in the background (8:30). That "electricity thing" in good reason why you don't swim in the marina. You could get electrocuted from the stray electricity in the water. They also say you should budget about 10% of your boat's value in yearly maintenance expenses. So, in your case, about $1300 (or roughly $100/month?)

Sadly you are not comparing the same things. Victoria is located in one of the most desirable places in the world and they are moored in a top notch marina at the harbour. I googled Paris Landing - it is on the Tennessee River and a lake and not located centrally downtown. The Victoria Harbour is located in a perfect spot to visit the beautiful Gulf Islands of BC. Plus, they are within walking distance of a lot of amenities including work. Plus, rents in the lower mainland of BC are some of the highest in the world so you cannot pass judgement on what they are paying. When they told us the price per foot of their boat it was lower than what we pay in Downtown Vancouver (BC) so it doesn't seem that high to us. It is all relative.

You will run aground. And during storms you need a way to keep warm when the power goes out. And sometimes you need to motor around in a storm. People think you can live cheap on a boat but in reality it's about the same price as living in a rental on land.

You should triple the maintenance cost. The outhaul and bottom job could be stretched out every two years in colder climates. I had a diver come out 4 times a year to scrub the bottom and replace the zincs that cost about $300 each time. He had a cool setup that you could copy for part time business. He had a Non Oil Based Air Compressor with an added 5 micron filter that hooked up to dockside power. The air hose was hooked up to a scuba regulator, so at less than 30 feet deep, he could stay under water as long as he needed to. He wore a scuba suit, weight belt, mask, & regulator. Jumped in beside the boat with a scraper and brush and went to work. Also, BOAT is an acronym that stands for "Bring On Another Thousand".

I dont know how environmental you can get about a boat, as theyre not insulated so heating is on 24/7 in the winter. And the gallons of paint for the bottoms and decks every few years.. Not to be confrontational, just realistic. But I wouldnt worry about it at all.

Very enjoyable and educational, only input missing was you did not factor in the purchase price of the boat and insurance. Maybe running the numbers with the purchase price amortized over 15 years (into a monthly number) along with all the other costs you covered would give a more reasonable number. But whatever way you calculate, you are doing the right thing in living a low carbon life, and this is very laudable.
@BlueMoonLife

Thanks so much for the comment Bill, that is a good idea to amortize over a longer period, would give people a better idea about the cost to "get into it," as compared with other options. On the wifi side, Starlink is $600 for the equipment and 130/month with great speeds. Unfortunately it needs to be configured for a fixed location on your dock. So some false equations in your budget (this is a good thing ^^) So first one is assumed depreciation, especially at 5%/yr which I feel is not accurate. In fact if you take the state you bought the boat in, then consider the repairs you have done.. and how much you can sell her for now. I bet your boat has appreciated in value, ie you can sell it for more now. So your maintenance budget (seems tight to me, but I have a 40' cutter in Sooke so I could be skewed), is also funding the value ie maintaining the value of your boat. Depreciation charts usually take the average for you model/year etc, it does not take in outliers. So if you are bringing the boat back from the dead essentially, sure for the $600/yr (rough) most of it is lost.. but some of it adds value to your vessel. All your other numbers seem spot on :) and neat things too, you can take out mortgages on boats in Canada. So if you keep this one bristol, you may not see any depreciation, you may see appreciation and as things evolve you can sell and use the cash as a downpayment on a bigger vessel or a house (bigger vessel 40 years old and fix her up so you make appreciation potentially on it and equity). Take care good video
@BlueMoonLife
@BlueMoonLife 3 года назад
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this comment! We are happy to hear the depreciation figure might be a bit off...and we do feel that this vessel has likely increased in value since the sale, nice to know there is some equity in it as long as we are able to keep it in good condition!

House, car, boat, children = money, you can just as easily have a damp problem in your basement, or a plumbing failure, structural issues (especially in Canada and the US where houses are predominately wood as you can on a boat, oil changes, bottom paint, annodes etc are no different to car or house maintenance like painting, roof repairs etc. I've just sold my house, car, toys etc. in South Africa and bought an 8 year old chined steel Van De Stadt 34' fully ocean rated and cruise equipped for less than a second hand 4×4 pickup, the big difference between a boat and a house is that a boat is a machine primarily and as such needs to be used as opposed to standing around, the vast majority of sailboats have system or structural failures because of lack of use, I live at anchor and have a mooring ball for lee shore conditions and convenience,my monthly expenses are around 400$ US a month, all included, as opposed to the 900$ I was paying on land (car expenses excluded) big difference and I have no issues doing my laundry in a bucket or taking it to a laundromat, I do however sail my boat almost daily and not donald duck 15 mile sails, I do offshore passages regularly with lots of night sailing and 150 mile trips, just to keep it all in good shape, if you don't, stuff will break and it will cost you a lot more than it has to. It's a sailboat after all, not a houseboat. BTW those marina fees are ridiculously expensive. It's obviously all relative. The changes you've had to make are all "comforts and luxuries", remember that the vast majority of people who live in a house have a car or 2, they need tyres, services, oil changes etc. I traded forced responsibilities and costs for voluntary responsibilities and costs. Just sail the damn boat, otherwise you may as well have bought a houseboat. Sure Canada gets cold in winter so that's a consideration, I choose to live on the hook from Monday to Friday and go to my mooring ball for the weekends, but I sail a lot as I'm planning a solo Atlantic crossing from Cape Town to Grenada soon so I want to be as best prepared as possible (boat and me) I also have a big enough house bank and solar array to sustain that, again not a massive expense when compared to utility bills.

@@BlueMoonLife many thanks, I am by no means an accomplished offshore skipper, a work in progress, but I have sailed more than enough offshore miles under race conditions and cruising in and around South Africa, totally different challenges, conditions and circumstances, no mater where you are a sailboat is still a sailboat, a machine with working components and systems that need to be used, same as a property that you lock up and leave for an extended period, when you turn on the hot water after a Canadian summer/winter cycle without continuous use you have a 50/50 chance of something not working, as with a car, you can't leave it standing for a long time in one place and expect it to run properly. Yachts are meant to be used, I've literally seen hundreds rot away or have horrible issues from lack of use, nice from far, far from nice. If I'm looking at a 30/40 year old boat and it's diesel has 500 hours, I'm expecting shit, if it gas 4000 hours, I'll be more hopeful, same with everything, my point is this, one day you decide to slip lines and go sailing and you get a bit of a blow, say 30 knots true (which is a moderate windspeed) you haven't checked your halyard sheaves, your stay hounds or your furling drum, or serviced your steering gear and you are overcanvassed with a heap of weather helm and try to reef but your main halyard is jamned at the masthead sheave block so can't ease the halyard, because of that ypur steering cable breaks and your furling system has issues with a seized top roller bearing so you're now overpowered, can't reduce sail area and have no steerage, can't find the emergency tiller, are drifting into a TSS and have an AIS target at CPA 2 miles traveling at 16 knots displacing 70 000 tons. ??????? All because of LACK of use and maintenance. Just be careful, the sea is a very unforgiving place. I've left port under power in 0.3 knots and 45 minutes later was hove to with a triple reefed main and reefed storm jib sheeted through the inboard cars (inside the shrouds and forward on the cabin top) to maintain sheet angles for sailing close hauled heavy weather with storm sails in 49 knots true with catabatic gusts in the upper 50's. In 45 minutes, we were well prepared and had no problems, but it can get hectic out there. Sure totally different circumstances and challenges apply in a city like Vancouver, black water pump outs etc...... I don't waste money on shit like like that, excuse the punn, I sail the mandatory miles offshore and discharge overboard, as per local and intl. maritime regulations, and anybody who has issues with that, my answer is this question 'where does every living sea creature shit"?????? In the sea, I use that as an opportunity to sail and dump my waste, keeps the crabs, prawns, lobsters etc happy😂😂😂😂

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on mooring fees. We had a 27ft Gibsea, a fabulous boat. "You have to cut the grass but you don't have to change the oil". Um, no. If you cut the grass, you maintain the mower. And if you live anywhere remotely affordable you probably change the oil in the car, which most liveaboards don't have. Replace a $20k roof every 20 years, appliances every 5-10 years, HVAC every 15-20 years etc etc. Houses are a lot of maintenance. Only thing you really miss on a boat is POTENTIAL appreciation of real estate, but many people lose money on houses if they make a true accounting of all costs.
