Brushes. I'm looking to add/replace some of my brushes and intend to get the official Bob Ross ones off Amazon. My question is, are there other adequate substitutes that people can buy?
Thanks, I got a value pack of the smallish canvas panels and I did not know if I needed to add gesso since it said it was primed. I am going to go ahead and get a bottle of gesso now
The canvas at Walmart say they are tripled layer gesso, haven’t opened it yet. Hope they work better, bought really small artist loft ones to practice just two at bogo price.
I would always add more gesso as needed :) but not too thick and if i felt the canvas wasnt sturdy enough I would gesso the back, I have switched to painting on wooden board or cradle board you can pick up at the dollar store. But be careful when painting on cheap canvases, but if you are wanting to sell a piece of art you made i would always try and get the level 4. Level 4 is not for painting on a budget mind you, if your tight on cash and just want to paint on something cheap to practice on pick these up
@@WildCreates Oh Im talking about the wooden panels not the canvas boards, I use "Cradled Boards" or Cradle boards" Or "Woooden artists board" as they might be called at micheals
You inspired me to try the Bob Ross method. Your tips and hacks are great! Is there a way I can share a painting or two with you? I am amazed what art can be accomplished if one just tries!
Glad to hear that my videos are really helping you out. I am also stoked that you are enjoying your painting adventures. Keep it up buddy! I have a IG and twitter. Feel free to share there. Links are in the video description!
Nice insightful vid. I'm considering purchasing several Level 2 8"x10" canvases or the 8"x10" Super Value 10 Pack for practice and preliminary work prior to a final painting on a Level 3 canvas. From your experience, have the smaller super value canvases quality wise held up over time? I'm unsure if I should pay more for the Level 2 for the increase in quality in case I really like how one of my practice pieces turns out or if I decide to sell it. I'm unsure if I would feel comfortable selling a painting completed on a super value canvas in regards to longevity. Thank you.
The super value holds up and I have sold many on that style of canvas. Just price it accordingly with the canvas. Side Note: If you make an awesome piece once... I am certain you can paint it again. Most likely even better! Since you will learn from your mistakes :)
@@WildCreates Thank you for your reply. You are right, if I were to make an awesome piece once I should be able to reproduce it even better! I'm going to go with the value pack canvases and give them a try.
Great stuff, thank you! I’ve never painted before, but I bought all the Bob Ross stuff needed to paint with my 10 year old niece. I have the Ross easel as well. In one of your videos you mentioned canvas paper on cardboard to practice with. His easel has the 4 screws, and I can get the cardboard to stay behind them and that might work. We also have some of the super thin canvases but I’m not sure how to get those to stay up. Any tips there or should those be abandoned on this easel? Michael’s has the level 1’s in stock if so. 2) For wet on wet/Ross’s paints I’ll be using, could you explain if I’d need more gesso on those level 1’s versus liquid white? I haven’t run into gesso in his instructional DVD’s yet.
A spare piece of wood can be used as a backing for canvas paper. Just find a piece that will accommodate your easel and mask tape the paper to the wood ( That is what I did and it works great )
I've just started oil painting (or as my wife calls it, the money pit). On canvases, I thought I was buying decent ones but, so far, everyone I buy has a board across the middle. This board, though not initially a problem, starts to be when I start painting in the middle. It will leave a clear straight line through the middle of the painting. I have gone to stores like Michaels and have been underwhelmed with their selection. Each canvas and pack I check all have that same board across the middle. Do you have any suggestions on canvases that don't have that board? Am I buying to cheap a canvas and need to up my game? Just need a suggestion. Thanks!
By board do you mean an actual backing board? Or do you mean a middle wooden support for the frame ( generally found on bigger canvases)? The canvas in this video have neither… so a little confused on what you are referencing.
@@WildCreates Sorry. I mean a middle wooden support. I went a size smaller (after your suggestion and Michaels had a huge sale on their canvases, even their black canvases woot!) and from the picture I didn't see that support board so hopefully not a concern now. But does all the larger canvases have a wooden support board on them? Like I said, when I paint I am getting a clear straight line from the board! ugh..
To be honest, if you are just starting out. Any budget friendly canvas will work perfectly fine. Just make sure you buy and add an extra layer or two of gesso. Since cheaper canvases will be sparse on the coating. If you are just looking for one on amazon. I have used this before and they get the job done: geni.us/16x20CanvasAmazon I hope that helps.

To be honest - Michael's Art store is my go too. About 3 to 4 times a year they will have all the canvases (of any size) 70% off. Also, about once ever 2/3 months they will mail or email you a coupon code for any item 50%. This is when I jump on big canvases! Hope that helps.
